A new report from our lab @jcobb_cobb @UVicBCMB shows that the transiently formed RNA:DNA hybrids at DNA double-strand breaks regulate end resection and promote EJ. Dna2 nuclease removes these hybrids and enables resection at DSB. @biorxivpreprint https://t.co/bLQXcqxkTG

DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are highly detrimental to cells, as improper repair can result in inheritable genetic rearrangements or cell death. The role of RNA:DNA hybrids (RDHs) in DSB repair...

Doing good science is finding the right balance between thinking small: obsessing over the minute details of a problem by mastering a given set of tools & thinking big: being receptive to having new (often strange) ideas from outside your field change how you think of a problem.

As someone who is a slow thinker I've always thought we in science put too much emphasis on fast thinking, Q&As, chalk talks, thesis exams, many classroom interactions are geared towards rewarding speed. But in science what matters is not who thinks fastest but who thinks deepest

Check out our @jcobb_cobb work that provides insight about age-related molecular changes in DSB repair, where both canonical pathways - HR and NHEJ become disrupted and cells gradually move towards error-prone DSB repair increasing the mutational burden.

A double -strand break (DSB) is one of the most deleterious forms of DNA damage. In eukaryotic cells, two main repair pathways have evolved to repair DSBs, homologous recombination (HR) and non-hom...

New work from the lab showing that upon appearance of DNA breaks RNA editing by ADARs contributes to fine tune the response. Among other things, it helps to remove DNA:RNA hybrids to expedite DNA resection. Read the whole story at ⁦@NatureComms

Here is a summary of the latest #COVID19AB numbers: There are currently 284 people in hospital due to COVID-19. Of the 225 non-ICU, 80% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 59 in ICU, 98.3% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. (1/4)

Well said. Please follow the lead of other Canadian Universities @UCalgary @teribalser so faculty can safely teach in person without fear of bringing home COVID to their unvaccinated child. Or immunocompromised parent. So many reasons....to put vaccine and mask mandates in place.

Very happy to share our paper on a new physical interaction of BLM with MCM in unperturbed G1 and S. Untethering Blm/Mcm6 leads to supra-normal replication speed that requires Blm ATPase activity. Congrats to two amazing 🙌 grad students. Details in:

What if we all made a promise when reviewing manuscripts not to demand any extra experiments but just ask authors to 1) fix formatting, missing refs, errors in text, 2) moderate overzealous claims, 3) honestly admit pitfalls in their study that could be addressed in future work?
