Teaching vocabulary shouldn’t mean leaving kids to guess from context. A story-based, explicit approach, inspired by Engelmann’s Theory of Instruction, can make new words both clear and engaging.

Can anyone recommend a handwriting intervention for secondary school?

We teach the lowest 10%. No one else does this successfully; some of the best-known ‘reading interventions’ actually ignore or avoid this group.

In English, Year 11 have been experimenting with characterisation in non-fiction writing. We're loving a technique shared by @Tom_Needham_ on his blog using fictional stories for emotive impact. Here's how one student applied this to exploring attitudes to crime and punishment.

Jake has written a brilliant explanation of how to harness the power of examples and non-examples when teaching vocabulary. Well worth a read!

Inspired by @C_Hendrick’s 10 Rules for Designing Effective Learning, I realised that using just one example and one non-example in vocabulary instruction leads to misgeneralisation.

Ian is right. @SCottinghatt's book is brilliant. A superb contribution to the In Action series. Look out for Hidden Lives of Learners (Bennie Kara) and Direct Instruction (@Tom_Needham_ ) coming soon.

Quite simply one of the best books I have read to help you think about how you teach and the teaching of ideas. Thank you ⁦@SCottinghatt⁩ ⁦@olicav

Hey teacher friends! I read this little book over the summer and started implementing the ideas right away. Most require zero materials and you can try them tomorrow. I feel rejuvenated in my teaching for the first time in a long time! @MrZachG #abed

President Trump is right. To stay ahead in the global AI race, America needs a unified federal framework. One that promotes innovation without overbearing regulation. A smart, cohesive national policy will ensure that American ingenuity leads the world in the age of A.I.

This September, if you are looking to improve your classroom practice, one of the highest-leverage but underused strategies to try is HIGH-FREQUENCY questioning. Not note-taking, not copying definitions, not retrieval starters. What do I mean? 1/

1. Focus on modelling how to craft arguments. 2. Model weaving opinion and argument using voice through a piece of writing. 3. Practise the mechanics - grammar, devices that might suit. 4. Play around with structure - love @Tom_Needham_ on paper 2 writing for this.

Students learn faster when they see what something is and what it isn’t. One of the most important aspect of curriculum planning + instructional design is effectively using examples and non-examples. 🧵⬇️
