Bottom line for me: Teaching EAL is great. it’s opened up nuances like this and reshaped how I see reading models.

Newer models (2021 for that matter) Active View of Reading, highlight the nuanced foundations that enable reading, like directionality and the left-to-right tracking needed in English.

George Box inspiration here: the Active View of Reading and my time teaching in the Middle East helped me see print concepts as belonging in both word recognition and language comprehension. Scarborough’s Rope doesn’t quite catch this, especially with Arabic script right to left.
