Late Friday professional news drop:
after such an eventful week in Maryland politics, I’m elated to be joining
@wamu885
/
@DCist
as a reporter covering Maryland (more specifically MoCo and Prince George’s County.)
My first day is August 8. 💕🦀♾
I’m elated to be heading back to the nation’s oldest still-in-operation State House. Starting next week I’ll be covering the General Assembly

@BaltimoreBanner
. See you in Annapolis!

When I tell people my grandparents were born in D.C. I'm met with a lot of "Nobody is from D.C.! How unique!" and it's like hm interesting...what if I told you there are plenty of people who were here longer than that! Many just are not white! They are in fact people!
@amandamull
This is the hill I die on. His sister died in 2011 from melanoma and he has given a lot of money to LGBT+ causes in her memory. He also coordinated a big relief effort during the Cali wildfires (.) Seems like a genuinely good dude.
I’ve never worked with or alongside a Baltimore Sun/Baltimore Sun Media Group journalist who wasn’t whip smart, very thoughtful, and deeply devoted to their work. Whatever you think of the new owner, don’t take it out on those who staff the paper.
Accidentally hit a guy on the sidewalk with my work bag. I apologized and said it’s bulkier than I realize. He looked at me so sincerely and said “Women have to carry so many bags. I don’t know how you do it.” So nice to be recognized for our greatest plight.
My last day with WAMU + DCist was yesterday. I am proud of the work I did single-handedly covering two counties — roughly two million people — over the last few months.
Thanks for reading.
I’m at Morgan State University, where U.S. Secretary of Transportation
@PeteButtigieg
is touring the Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies and participating in a town hall.
@WYPR881FM
The outlet where I published my first personal essay is shutting down and the NPR affiliate I’ve listened to loyally since childhood (and briefly worked) is in a questionable state. What exactly do people think the world will be like without reliable journalism?
BIG NEWS for calzone lovers: After a long 2.5ish years, D.P. DOUGH IS RETURNING TO COLLEGE PARK. Current and former UMD Students, how do you feel? DM me or email callan

After an hour of debate, an amendment proposed to the Trans Health Equity Act that would have prohibited gender affirming care for recipients under age 18 fails 90-37.
Words I never thought I’d say: Just made my live TV debut on
@wjz
. It was brief but scary and as always hats off to those who do this every day.

Good morning!
One week from today I’m starting with
@WYPR881FM
to cover the general assembly. 🎉
It goes without saying but I am EXTREMELY excited to return to public radio, and to cover the legislative session again.

Hi I put it in my bio so guess it’s time to tell y’all I will be serving as
@nhpr
’s inaugural investigative reporting intern with the
@nhprdocument
team this summer.
Can’t really put into words how much of a dream come true this is. I’ve never been so excited.
At the risk of oversharing, some advice: listen to your body!!
A week and a half ago I went to the ER with abdominal and leg pain. Earlier today I was discharged after a stint inpatient with severe shingles. The ordeal was terrible but I’m better only because I was seen by pros.
Today was my last day with
@WYPR881FM
.
Up next: thrilled to announce I'll be taking some time off! I will let you know when that is no longer my immediate plan.
Love you so much Baltimore and WYPR fam 🦀💕
House Speaker
@SpeakerAJones
has introduced a bill to enshrine the right to an abortion in the Maryland constitution.
Sound familiar? She introed it last session too.
This time it has 80(!) cosponsors.
I was genuinely concerned over the looks I’d get at the office today whilst powerclashing in a Halloween sweater over a patterned dress but fear not reader
@maustermuhle
outdid us all today. 🐘🐘🐘
Having a chronic illness/disability and attempting to live a semi-normal life is far more emotionally and physically taxing than those around you make it seem.
I admire Sen.Fetterman's transparency and would feel the same way if it were another politician or public figure.
Nearly every day for more than two years I’ve come within inches of being mowed down in the same Silver Spring crosswalk. The only thing that prevents it is yelling “LET ME CROSS” at full volume. Always get looked at like I’m unwell. I’m over it!!!!
Years ago I emailed a then-arts reporter I really admired for career advice. A few months ago, by pure chance, she became my newsroom buddy at
@wamu885
. Congrats on the new gig
@allyschweitzer
mothership is so lucky to have you 💕
Getting a call with an offer for my first full-time reporting job mere minutes after I began a serving shift at the restaurant where I've worked while freelancing over the last ~5 years is like some feel-good movie cliché but damn does it feel amazing 🥲
Hot(?) take if doctors can charge you for being late to an appointment you should be able to do the same when they make you sit in the waiting room for an hour.
I never know how or if I should publically acknowledge this date but 10/12 is my half birthday and the 13th anniversary of my heart transplant (which I got at age 13.) Please wear a mask.
St.Patrick’s Day is dumb but I feel connected to my Irish heritage. I recently found out my great grandfather, an immigrant from Roscommon, was put on trial for literal back door liquor sales out of his saloon on M St. in Georgetown in 1898.
Oh your ancestor is a war hero? Cool.
I’m at Baltimore City Hall where
@Zeke_Cohen
@Porter4Bmore
and multiple community members are calling on
@MayorBMScott
to collab w the Council to create a fund that would support organizations dedicated to protecting repro rights in Baltimore.

"As cancer gets more conquerable...it will be managed 'as a chronic disease, not necessarily curable but treatable, like other conditions, ordinary. It will no longer be so feared.'
This is less comforting when you remember how America treats its other chronic diseases."

It has been two hours and you haven’t deleted a categorically false statement that has huge public safety implications. Everyone makes mistakes but take the L. COVID cases are spiking in the area and messages like this have the potential to do real harm.
The
@BuffaloBills
have to win tomorrow for Rob, native son of western New York. I’m literally gonna have the game on during his funeral service on mute. Tell Josh Allen to hit me up if he needs a pregame pep talk.
The Maryland Senate passed the Declaration of Rights - Right to Reproductive Freedom 32-15. The cross filed bill passed in the House last week.
This means a ballot question about enshrining the right to an abortion in the state is almost guaranteed to be on the ballot in 2024.

it’s all food preferences for me but I was also a kid when I got my tx so my personality wasn’t fully developed. But full categories of food (sweets) i didn’t touch for the first half of my life that I now can’t keep my hands off of.
It's finally live! This is by far the biggest project I have worked on for
@wamu885
/
@DCist
and one of the largest of my career.
