Been thinking a lot about Fight Club, which really is to say: the 1990s, pre-9/11 life, and nostalgia for nerding out about movies: I spent more time with the movie in college, where Tyler Durden’s poster was a fixture in many dorm rooms, in a close battle with The Boondock

I do not understand why @DoorDash’s Caviar requires a PIN for deliveries EVEN WHEN I TURN IT OFF This makes me LESS SAFE Instead of the delivery guy leaving my food in the elevator, he now is trying to push into my apartment and confirm the PIN

The NY Times often gets well-deserved criticism for its impetuousness and shallowness But credit where credit is due: this is a long, detailed and direct accounting of the stain of Jan 6 that stays with us
NYT editorial board with a bracing Jan. 6 anniversary reminder of Trump's role in stoking the attack, the violence against police & the complicity of elected R's and conservative media in whitewashing history. Names are named. https://t.co/U8SpXmEuJU

80s to early 90s grunge to late 90s alt rock were such whiplash changes it seems obvious that some great bands were passed over bc their timing was off
My long-ago book idea was a city-by-city look at how the post-Nirvana major label signing spree disrupted local music scenes. There are lots of interesting, mostly untold stories from bands of that era of how their dalliances and near misses with fame played out

Like “what are your biggest weaknesses?” in a job interview, there is something to be learned by these answers, though not actual self-reflection and transparency
Every year @semafor asks some important and interesting people in media what they got wrong in 2025. Here are their responses:

“Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 10 $20 million movies” - @cordjefferson talked about this in his oscars acceptance speech It’s odd there aren’t more A24s making the smaller/mid range movies so that each new release doesn’t have to bear the burden of

We should certainly focus on the quality / artistry reviews more than crunching numbers But it takes so much money to make modern movies and there are so few people with the power to greenlight any time a director, leading actor, or even genre gets center stage, their fans
This is a really interesting point. There’s no question that movie discourse these days is a blur between “is the movie good?” and “can we turn its P&L into a discourse?” and I have to imagine that’s frustrating for folks who care a lot about question 1 and DGAF about 2. On

The actions of the administration have no cultural relevance? Imagine saying all Vietnam-era art can’t be considered in the context of Nixon -OR- LBJ’s administrations
@jwilcox79 I am a culture writer who is talking about the cultural impact of artists self-censoring over politics; the legality of what Trump did is simply not culturally relevant and not something you should be looking to me for insight on, let alone getting angry at me about

About as good of a description of nostalgia that you’ll find
I called my dad yesterday to tell him I had been thinking about Christmas Eves from my childhood. I realized that some of my happiest memories are of being a little girl at my grandparents’ house, being sent to bed early on Christmas Eve, and knowing the house was full of adults
