For all those complaining the camera person could have been helping, How? not enough room to get 2 or 3 people to help the driver, did you want the camera person to be hit with the bar being used? 2 guys was enough to free the driver, and it worked out well.

I tried that position in a B-17 while in the US, thankfully not flying. I don't know how those kids did it day after day. Alot of them got frost bite because they had no relief tube to use. Then it would freeze in the flight suit at 6 miles high. Brave guys, all of them 🫡

Here's another book I would RECOMMEND. I knew the pilot when I was a kid. In the late 80's I worked at Oxford Orthopedic Services, where I had the privilege of making him 2 new legs. He was a giant of a man who was also a true gentleman.

Flt Lt Alastair "Sandy" Gunn.
Shot down in his PRU Spitfire over Norwegian coast on 5 March 1942. Made POW and sent to Stalag Luft III. He was one of 76 to escape in the in the Great Escape,24/25March 44. He was recaptured and was 1 of 50 Murdered by Gestapo 6 April 44

Only just found this out: The funeral service for Sqn Ldr G L (Johnny) Johnson MBE DFM took place yesterday, Monday 19 December, in Holy Trinity Church, Westbury-on-Trym. It was a private family service. Later this week, Johnny will be buried next to his late wife Gwyn in Torquay
