He-51. Not the best interwar fighter, but one of the best looking. What do you think was the best fighter of the post WW1 - Spanish Civil War era?

It took five days of short hops to get to Wright Field from the Sikorsky factory in Connecticut; the XR-4 could only fly for an hour at a time. A later version, the YR-4B, was used for the first ever helicopter rescue during WWII, in the Burma-China-India theater (April 1944).

1942: The Army Air Forces first helicopter, the Sikorsky XR-4 Hoverfly, is delivered to Wright Field, OH. Igor Sikorsky and C.L. “Les” Morris deliver the craft personally. It is accepted by the AAF on May 30th. The XR-4 will be the only U.S. helicopter to see action during WWII.

The Budd Conestoga. It turned out to be a thirsty bird with only a 700 mi range so only 20 got built. It may not be the prettiest thing you’ll see today.

Reportedly Romania is about to withdraw its MiG-21s from service. Not many operators left of the most produced jet fighter ever. 📷tomd.jones
