In Feb 2021 the then housing minister @KevinStewartSNP reassured everyone that fees for #STLlicensing would “be in the range £223 and £377 for a three-year licence”. Many are actually facing fees of more than twice that - in Edinburgh £3,000 to £5,000 - which are NON-REFUNDABLE

New: Humza Yousaf has rejected a call from the body representing B and B accommodation in Scotland to delay a new licensing scheme deadline of October 1st. The FM said the scheme is the "right thing to do" and operators have had "plenty of time" to get their applications in.

Yes very true: that’s why since 2019 we urged @scotgov to go for a light-touch, digital enabled national registration scheme, rather than 32 different bureaucratic & onerous licensing schemes. And the #EU (which SG likes to align with) is now going for digital registration too

@murdo_fraser @TheScotsman Thanks for this. I just closed my farmhouse STL - part of my home - I ran for many years. Welcomed guests from around the world to very rural S Lanarkshire. Received farm business diversification grant to upgrade in 2017. Now illegal to operate. Too costly to licence. Senseless.

. #scotchwhisky is a huge driver of tourism & local spend. Sadly this will be hit by #STLlicensing . One example: the only B&B in Glenlivet is closing on Saturday, & the owners are now contacting clients from USA, Switzerland, Singapore, Germany & Australia to cancel their bookings

It seems @FifeCouncil said in May 2022 in writing that B&Bs & guesthouses in Class 7 would NOT need to apply for an STL License. Then v recently when asked for confirmation, FC did a “U turn” and said they must now apply, citing a “change” in rules. The law has NOT changed 1/2

The warnings of @andywightman & others should be heeded. The lack of proper gas checks & CO detectors can be fatal. Two Airbnb guests died last year and SIX so far this year (that we know of) from CO poisoning. Luckily none in UK (yet).

2/2 Only the (non-statutory) guidance changed. The law as regards “Class 7” exempts only “hotels”, yet guesthouses & B&Bs may also be in C7. The wording is a fudge: it is very badly drafted and legally open to challenge. Yet another area of legal challenge for #STLlicensing

Is that “proportionate”?
