is an honor and joy💜. New positions for FY24 about to drop so stay tuned! If you'd like to learn more about what is happening in our department, read on!
I have been hearing a lot recently from female mentees about discomfort with sharing accomplishments publicly on platforms like Twitter. Let’s amplify the voices of female scientists and also support them to find their own voice to share accomplishments.
I hope we can all be extra gracious and show kindness and love to parents of young kids under 5 who don't have the option to get their kids vaccinated in the omicron surge. Sending peace and strength. I see you all. I haven't forgotten how hard it is to have unvax kiddos at home
We did it ya'll! Thrilled to share that I am now a Professor
@PennMedicine
@PennPsych
@PennMEHP
. Huge thnx to colleagues, team, friends, & fam who lifted me up and made this possible. This woman, PhD in a med school, first gen immigrant, & mama of young kiddos is filled with joy.
Evidence suggests that if a woman asks the first question in an academic seminar, more women will ask questions subsequently. Fellow

I am honored to be appointed Director of
@PennNudgeUnit
. Excited to bring together
#behavioraleconomics
and
#impsci
to achieve impact at scale in partnership with
@PennMedicine
community. My "door" is open -- I'd love to hear your input on how we can best meet your needs.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of
@rsbeidas
, an internationally recognized leader in implementation science, as director of the
@PennNudgeUnit
. Learn more about Dr. Beidas here: .
It is my last day
@PennMedicine
. My time
@Penn
has made me a better scientist, leader, clinician, & educator. I look forward to ongoing collabs & to watching Penn Med continue to change the world. Huge thanks to our incredible team who made the magic happen ♥️
Behind every success is 100 failures. Remember that,
#academictwitter
! On this windy Monday AM, my constant refreshing of Commons resulted in an ND. Sharing to normalize failure. Every review makes your science stronger, irrespective of outcome. Also, bourbon.
8 yo woke up - runny nose, slightly sore throat - feeling good. Stayed home per school rules. PCR needed to go back to school. No appt for 3 days. Went to CHOP and begged. They took mercy. He's neg - can go to school tmrw. Too much sludge. Where is the testing infsx in US??
I won't tweet the article because I will not propagate misogyny, hatefulness, and derision toward doctorates and women. I'm disappointed in
@WSJ
and an apology is warranted to DR
@DrBiden
. Let's come together - not create more division and hurt in this time of grief and struggle.
Today is the day! I am so excited to assume the helm of such a special department
@NUFeinbergMed
,
@MSSatNU
! MSS was built by a visionary leader, Dr. Dave Cella, & an incredible departmental leadership team, & includes exceptional faculty, staff, & trainees. The future is bright!
I am 28 followers away from 2000! Can you help me get there? I’m an associate professor
@penn
, I live and breathe implementation science, and I tweet about

Reviewer PSA: Please use correct investigator pronouns in summary statements. In almost every summary statement this year, reviewers refer to me using male pronouns despite use of the female pronoun in the grant. It is a microagression towards
#womeninSTEM
and I'm tired of it.
#MyNameIs
Rinad Sary Beidas. Rinad means desert flower in Arabic. My mom dreamt she had a baby with my name the night before I was born. Sary is my dads name and means noble. My parents are immigrants who brought me to the US at age 2 in search of a better life for their daughter
I'm thrilled to share the wonderful news that my dear colleague and
#impsci
partner, Dr
@mlanefall
has been appointed the David E. Longnecker Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care
February during a pandemic. Study section plus snow days have me tired. Enough said. My sweet family had this waiting for me when I came down from my office. The "I love mommy" in legos slayed me.
Reasons to love
@penn
. I crowdsourced a list of good books to help women succeed at work, particularly academia. I just learned that our
@pennnursinglib
has identified funds to buy all the books on the list as part of their "Diversity in the Stacks" initiative. How lucky are we?
How are you celebrating the accomplishment of an October 5th NIH submission? I'll start. I'm going to the spa and spending the weekend in Hershey PA with my littles and husband, eating
#allthechocolate
and enjoying
#someofthebourbon
.
Language matters. I'll never forget standing in line with my parents for an immigration appointment as a young child and how my heart sank when I saw signs that said "alien." I immigrated as a 2 yo and I've always identified as American. Thank you President
@JoeBiden
It is my great honor to embark upon this collaborative R01 funded by
@NINR
with MPIs
#DrFlorenceMomplaisir
and
#DrRobertGross
. We will conduct a Type II hybrid trial to test the implementation of MAPS in Philly clinics who serve people living with HIV.
May all submitting
@NIH
grants for October 5 celebrate submitting. Easy to focus on end product (awarded or not). Truth is we all submit a lot of great science, and only some can be funded. Celebrating effort and new insights just as important as the outcome!
Sharing my OOO to normalize the reality of current circumstances for others: Happy February 1st! It's a pandemic + snow day + no childcare kind of day. I thank you for your compassion with regard to my likely delayed response. I'll respond to your email as soon as I am able.
Random tip of the day? A colleague texted me telling me why and how I was effective in a talk. Reflecting on how meaningful it was to hear those words from him. Consider telling someone how awesome they are because we all need kindness and validation and to lift one another up.
.
@chris_bonafide
and I are thrilled to receive
@NIH_NHLBI
NOA for EMO 2.0! We will conduct a hybrid type III effectiveness-deimplementation trial in 32 peds hospitals to test competing strategies on the sustainability of SpO2 monitoring deimplementation in stable bronchiolitis.
True story. I was rejected from Penn for undergrad, law school, and psychology PhD (it took me a tiny bit to figure out what I wanted to do with my life 🤣🤣). Now I'm an Associate Prof at Penn Med. Never give up on your dreams and the road is windy.
To any high school students out there right now that may be absolutely crushed because you were rejected by your dream school...know that ~ 10 years later you could be teaching medical students surgical skills at that same dream school.
*possibly based on a true story*
Stressful for so many reasons. The right thing to do was to keep him home. It shouldn't be so hard to get tested. We are putting parents/schools in an impossible situation. We are incentivizing parents to turn a blind eye to mild symptoms. We have to make it easier to test.
Today a female mentee that is off to grad school left this card on my desk. The words inside brought tears to my eyes. I’m honored to have played a small role in a chapter of her adventure and look forward to watching her 💫

Interested in perusing the books that were recommended as "must reads" for women in academic research? Here it is! Please add. The problem is there are too many! I added a column so you can add recs if there are ones that particularly spoke to you!
Thread: It is raining. It is the Monday after Thanksgiving, in a global pandemic. We did very little this break. Played Monopoly. Watched boatloads of TV. Slept. Ate
#alltheturkey
. It was glorious. And yet, I need more time. Today, all I want to to do is get back in bed.
We are all stretched thinner than ever. The stress of the moment is untenable. And yet, now, we must be kinder to one another more than ever. Today, I challenge us all to remember that we are all doing our best and remember that a little kindness goes a long way.
Turns out, if you aren't in Zoom meetings for 9 hours a day, that a) you can actually accomplish tasks, b) when you do attend meetings, you can concentrate better, and c) you can feel less stressed bounding your work day. How to implement this in daily life? Asking for a friend
Hive mind: I want to curate a library of books for my mentees (who are almost entirely females) on success in personal and professional pursuits with an eye towards academia. Can you help me? List your fav below My favorite is

Beyond lucky to enjoy this incredible view (40 degrees and sunny in January!!) on my run today. Come join us at
@NUFeinbergMed
@MSSatNU
- we have multiple positions open!
We laughed, we cried, we celebrated the inimitable and brilliant Dr
@MCarnethon
who received the
@NUFeinbergMed
Paula Stern award. She is an inspiration to us all. May we all channel the spirit of Merci in how we lead, do science, mentor, sponsor, and lift up others.
It is an incredible honor to be recognized in this way by
@Acenda_AIHI
. This award belongs to the many individuals and community partners who work so hard to increase access to and quality of evidence-based mental health care in Philadelphia!
Congrats to CHIBE Associate Director
@Rsbeidas
who has won the Research Pioneer Award from
@Acenda_AIHI
! This award is part of AIHI’s inaugural “Momentum Awards,” which celebrate people paving the way for the future of behavioral health care delivery.
I'm lucky that I'm living my dreams. The work is hard and meaningful and mission driven and pushes me to constantly evolve surrounded by the best team and collaborators. Faculty person is pretty close to writer, right? 🤣
#impsci
I found this piece by my dear friend and colleague Dr
@meganranney
@CNN
to be deeply thought provoking. "So I take her story as a warning, particularly for women and minorities: Sometimes our methods of survival can turn into weaknesses."
I'm always jarred by how hard it is to find MH care when I help family and friends navigate as a psychologist. The reality is that there are a number of mountains to overcome. Access, quality, and barriers to engaging all major issues. Need federal resources and coordination.
In rural Texas, I looked for mental health providers for one of my kids for 2 years.
When you add insurance limitations, waiting lists, and the lack of infinite time..
The reality is there's no one to "reach out" to.
Haven't been in my office since Dec due to omicron. I came in prepared to see dead plants. Filled with joy to see that someone has been watering my plants (they are thriving). Thanks to
@PennMedicine
employees for always going above and beyond - can't wait to thank this kind soul
Congrats to the

So excited to learn that
@NIH
has funded this paradigm shifting research led by 2
@PennMedicine
colleagues whom I respect immensely Drs
@Eugenia_South
@atheendar
and in partnership with our community. This will have a tremendous impact on our city.
Sometimes I stop in my tracks and wonder how I got so lucky. Pausing to appreciate all the beautiful things in life including my family and the sweet summer ocean air. Grateful for these moments.

6 friends from Temple clinical psychology graduate program 15 years later. We are all clinical psychologists, harmonizing research and clinical careers alongside raising young children. It is possible to have the balance that you seek - just have to find the right balance for you
It is a very exciting time
@NUFeinbergMed
@MSSatNU
! We are recruiting an early to mid-career tenure-track investigator with a portfolio focused on intervention development and testing, with an emphasis on behavior change and scalable implementation!
I feel deep disappointment today in how divided our country is. Please take care of yourself and spread love if you are able. I seek solace in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
No words to describe how I feel abt this pub which is the culmination of 6 yrs! Grateful to

I have a hard time shutting my "work" brain off in general, and this is exacerbated by working from home. There is nothing more powerful and ritualistic than shutting off my work email from my phone at 5:30 pm on Friday. It signals "weekend" time to my brain!
This pandemic has really pushed me to constantly be flexible and pivot based on circumstances of the day. It feels like having a newborn again - I never know what to expect. I can only plan for today and have to be prepared to change based on the circumstances tomorrow.
My husband gets called into an emergency 6 am meeting on Friday. I am at
#DIScience19
presenting Friday AM. 2 kids at home. My friends and colleagues step in to offer to help even though they have crazy lives also. I feel so much love and support.
#thisismyvillage
I am learning so much from Dr

Ya'll. I'm giving my first IN PERSON talk tomorrow. Will I still remember how to do it? Will I be able to read nonverbal cues with a masked audience? For folks who've already returned to the podium, any tips for jumping back in post TWO YEARS OF THE ZOOM PRESENTATIONS? Share pls!
Every year, we go away in August and unplug for a week. Decided I need to do it in more than once a year. Starting tomorrow, I'll be off the grid for a week enjoying break with my fam. We all work so hard. May you take the time you need to recharge and be your best for 2020!
I just received an email from SRO telling me the exact date to expect a score and the exact date for the SS and I don't know what to do with myself. Will l still refresh eRA commons 1000 times before those dates or is this the right nudge to change that behavior?!😅🤣
I have attended every
#DIScience
conference since the first one. Words can not express how tremendously honored and humbled I am to be included as an invited guest speaker
#DIScience19
. Looking forward to this important conversation around natural laboratories for

Today, 6- and 8-yo are fully vax COVID-19. We feel so lucky to protect them and our community. We will still mask indoors and be cautious but will also engage in more social activities with friends who are also vax for our mental health. It's been a long 21 mnths. I choose hope.
"Women’s pathological politeness, an everlasting ploy of the patriarchy, is very much alive and well...Over time, young girls evolve into women who prioritize other individuals’ comfort and emotions over their own.”

Our

@ImplementSci

So my email migrated and it locked me out of my phone and now I can't figure out how to get email back on my phone and it might be the biggest gift of 2021.
Today, a colleague reached out to tell me about her successes. Made my week. She is living authentically in line with her values, following her passion, and changing the world. Nothing better than seeing people live their best lives. Remember, there is no 1 path. Just your path.
While watching Maleficent, my 7 yo son just said, with tears in his eyes, I wouldn't kill someone to become king," and dammit I feel like we've done something right.
I love this team! So grateful to this incredible group of brilliant and mission driven women. I learn so much from them every day. The future is bright ☀️
