Dismayed to see you sharing such a misleading & potentially deeply frightening video, Kim. If someone is in 'unspeakable pain' at the end of life, they should see a palliative care doctor like me - & I can promise you there is always something I can do for your pain. (1/n)
Great to hear from @PrueLeith who knows all too well how the current status quo restricting choice at the end of life fails so many.

Fascinating first day in the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill committee, hearing evidence from experts (most of them pro assisted dying). Main takeaway: it really isn't clear what shape this Bill will be in when it comes back to the Commons. Issues that arose:

Has Britain finally fallen out of love with university? - not true that cost has not increased - cost of living, interest on loans have all increased, most graduates pay 9% extra from earnings for life to repay loans.

Academics are paid nothing for peer review. Yet journals made a total of over $8.3 billion on article processing charges alone between 2019-2023. Make it make sense.

In-vitro assays are an important component of drug development but assessing assay-phenotype relevance is challenging. Here propose an instrumental variable framework LoF-IV using gene perturbation screen data (CRISPR-Cas9) and pLoF data from population biobanks.

Another mind-blowing discovery from deCODE team. Homozygosity of a loss of function variant (p.Arg162Ter) in CCDC201, an obscure gene that was only recently added to human gene database, is associated with a whopping 9 years earlier onset of menopause. This effect size is

The odds are strongly stacked against those in the lowest 30% of ability for English and Maths because the grade boundaries change to ensure that only around 66-69% of GCSE grades awarded are a 4 or above, no matter how hard students work.
@MBDscience @Clive_Hill @naomicfisher From 1988 to 2010 the proportion of A-C grades increased from 41.9 to 69.8, I doubt people became more intelligent, but they probably did work harder and got better at passing exams & presumably learnt more, but then a decision was made to keep the proportions the same each year

Five Things All Young People (and adults) Should Know About GCSEs on Results Day. 1. It is not possible for everyone to succeed in their GCSEs. The exam results are referenced against earlier cohorts, meaning that around 30% will get failing results every year. This is built

Bottom 35-40% will always fail Maths and English it it baked into the system. Even if they got 65% in their maths exam, as some students did this year they can still fail. GCSEs test relative not absolute standards

How can it be right that you can get 65% in GCSE maths and fail? (AQA foundation tier 157/240 required for a grade 4). That seems outrageous to me.

Best of luck to the amazing young people receiving their GCSE results today— They sacrificed a lot in their 2 first years of their secondary school transition. We owe them a massive debt

only the lowest calibre of people would sink to this - ruining a place of learning , used by children from deprived communities, in the holidays. This is a direct attack on children’s rights.
Liverpool's Spellow Lane library torched last night. What could be more 'patriotic' than destroying a centre which serves the local community?
