PROTEUS harnesses the forces of Darwinian evolution and Dawkins’ “selfish gene” concept in its purest form to find a solution for virtually any biological problem we are interested in, e.g. mutation-specific BASE editors, new mRNA medicines, or a million other things. 5/6

We called it PROTEUS (PROTein Evolution Using Selection) after some shape shifting Greek god that can see the future. PROTEUS is the divine personification of change, secrets, and the fluid nature of the sea. 4/6

A transgene variant that is better at solving the problem wins out over variants with less optimal solutions. Basically we run millions of calculations in parallel and PROTEUS helps us find the correct solution for the question we ask, and it does it in mammalian cells. 3/6

How it works: You design a genetic problem you want to solve and build this into a circuit that converges on a transcriptional output at the end. Then you add in a transgene and let it mutate and evolve millions of variants in parallel. 2/6
