What an amazing opportunity it was to participate in City2Surf 2025 in Sydney yesterday! Fantastic to see so many people out there having fun (us included!). I was also very thankful for the opportunity to highlight things we can do for others to improve life and outcomes for

On August 10, I’m participating in the 2025 City2Surf fun run to raise funds for Chris O’Brien Lifehouse (& to have a bit of fun too!). I have been a doctor at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for more than 25 years. I was fortunate enough to know Chris when I was a junior doctor at

There are many brilliant specialist melanoma clinicians and researchers in Australia. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to catch up with two wonderful teams in Melbourne at Peter MacCallum Cancer Clinic and the Alfred Hospital. There are many outstanding people at these

My eldest daughter Emily is running the City2Surf this year for the third time (or fourth if you include the year Katie and I pushed her in a pram when she was only a few months old!). City2Surf 2025 will be held in Sydney on Sunday 10th August and Emily is raising money for

When my brain function had dropped a bit in late May, I was so lucky to have an amazing and relaxing holiday in Darwin with Katie and my brother Mark and his partner Anna. It was perfect to have a few days away and take it easy, relax and have some fun. Darwin and the surrounding

I was very touched to receive the 2025 Inner West Citizen of the Year award from my local council and other community members in late May. Due to my challenges around this time related to my brain tumour, at times I struggled during my speech. Nevertheless, from the kindness and

It sure is amazing to be back out there participating and enjoying life. A month or so ago, I had some tough times with recurrent brain tumour and additional challenges. These were associated with swelling of my brain which can cause changes in how I am functioning. However, now

I made many wonderful friends during my years in Launceston and Hobart, especially during my time at the University of Tasmania. It means so much to me to still enjoy those friendships today. I had a brilliant weekend catching up with university friends in Hobart and it was great

I am a very proud Tasmanian (as many will know) and I am very proud to be a graduate of the University of Tasmania, having completed my undergraduate medical degree there in 1990. My education there had a big impact on my medical and academic career, and my scientific drive to

Tour de Cure is an amazingly committed and hard-working cancer community. It was fun to attend their annual Snow Ball event in Sydney on Friday. I was very humbled to hear the announcement of the inaugural Scolyer Award for cancer researchers. I also felt very touched to receive

Today I completed my 250th Parkrun down at the Greenway. I feel so touched at how many people showed up to demonstrate their support and kindness. Parkrun is such an important staple in my week and a fantastic, volunteer-run organisation who make it easy and accessible for anyone

It’s been a little while since I last posted — as you can imagine, things go up and down with how I’m feeling during treatment. This week, it feels like the fog has lifted a bit, and I’ve been able to enjoy some really special moments with family and friends. I’m especially

A recent MRI scan showed, in the left side of my brain, further progress of my glioblastoma (IDH wild-type, etc.) and related adjacent reactive changes. Here is a couple of pictures. Whilst this may not be the best direction to be heading with my changes, amazingly (to me) I

In May 2023, a glioblastoma (GBM) in my brain was diagnosed following a seizure then brain scans and surgery. A recent MRI brain scan shows the recurrent tumour is still there and it's getting tougher to treat. But I’m not ready to give up on it yet. I feel lucky to have a team
