We (and I suppose many other journals) do not request correct formatting on the first submission. Science first, appearance later. We were researchers before becoming editors and still remember the pain of reformatting 10x the same manuscript. No more.

3. They assume readers will read the text; they don't! Readers look at the figures first and often don't go any further, so tell the story of the paper with the figures.

What is terribly fascinating is that, while the surface of Earth looks huge from a human size perspective, the vertical layer in which we can live (and where most life happens) is amazingly thin, 5-10 km. It is a short distance we could walk in one-two hours if it was horizontal.
