🚨In my final piece of 2020, I look ahead to Pandemic Year 2--the vaccination rollout, how the virus will react, the lingering societal scars, and the larger lessons we must learn (but risk forgetting) from this horrendous year. 1/

Lol, I lost my 532-day NYT crossword streak because I was, er, distracted yesterday. Really a week of ups and down. 😂

Doing this work has been an honor. It has changed my understanding of journalism, of the world, and of my place in both. I’ve tried to live up to the responsibilities of the moment, as a writer & a person. I did my best to help. Now I’m taking some time to help myself. 11/

My new book—AN IMMENSE WORLD—comes out this summer. It’s about how other animals sense the world, and the very different version of reality that they perceive. Here’s a thread about the book, why I wrote it, and why I hope you'll enjoy it. 1/

The coronavirus bursts into a bar at 10.01pm but it's empty. It sulks off, thwarted. The coronavirus enters a room to find only 14 people. "Curses," it says, "foiled again." The coronavirus finds *15* people but they leave after 14 minutes. "DAMMIT."

Another way to think about these lags is that some of the people who are infected on Thanksgiving will enter the hospital in the middle of December, and the morgue around Christmas.

A reminder that thousands of people are still struggling with long-term symptoms of COVID-19, and that many have had to fight for even a shred of medical acknowledgment, let alone experimental drugs.

This @annehelen piece on millennial burnout is definitive. It surpasses what has come before and sets a *very* high benchmark for anything on this topic to follow. It's profound, sweeping, and breathtakingly good. I'm going to read it again.

🧵I want to share some thoughts about reporting on long COVID and other complex chronic illnesses. (e.g. below) This is a thread about the ethos behind these pieces, and how I’ve approached interviewing, writing, and the rest of it. 1/

🚨I wrote about “brain fog”—one of the most common & disabling symptoms of long COVID (and many other pre-pandemic conditions), and one of the most misunderstood. Here’s what brain fog actually is, and what it’s like to live with it. 1/

To be simply ignored would be bad enough. To be *mocked* is even worse. Many immunocompromised people I spoke to are tired of pundits who equate risk-aversion with irrationality. They’re sick of being a throwaway clause in someone’s callous op-ed. 5/

Never before in recorded history has a single disease burned down so much of the tree of life. New estimates show that the doomsday fungus called Bd has caused the decline of over 500 species and the extinction of at least 90.

Around 63,000 Americans died of COVID last month. On average, each death leaves 9 close relatives bereaved. That's at least half a million people whose extremely recent grief is being trampled under the stampede of back-to-normal policies & punditry.

I assessed the risk of Trump having infected Biden at the debate, based on what we know about how SARS-CoV-2 spreads, and how long it takes to be infectious or develop symptoms. (Yes, Biden tested negative today but that means little this early.)

🚨I wrote about the millions of people who lost loved ones to COVID, what they've gone through, and the many factors that have intensified and prolonged their grief. This piece is my attempt to honor those we lost, and the many more who love them. 1/

I'm publishing another long COVID piece tomorrow (Thursday). It's a companion to the brain fog piece I wrote last year--a biography of a symptom, but this time focused on fatigue (and PEM). I've been meaning to do this for a long time, and I'm glad it's finally coming out.
