2/100 (yes, not a typo) in my first micro theory PhD midterm. The worst thing? I spent the whole exam answering the questions, and I finished thinking I did a decent job. A lesson of humility, I had never failed before. Bottom line: if you have to fail, fail big or go home.

Flex your lowest academic low score. To remind us that almost everyone fails at some point in life but it isn't the end of the road. Just a memory in the end. Mine was 27/100 in Engineering Math 2, just a year after I'd scored 99 in 12th boards. Much needed kick in my butt.

Very frustrating and upsetting. I applied to the dev Starting Grant, which *required* not to apply to any other VR grant. All my eggs were on a single basket. Yearly cycles mean I can get VR funding for my RCTs in… Jan 2025. As untenured faculty, this is extremely harmful.

Disastrous decision by the Swedish government to scrap funding for development research. Including just submitted grants—thousands of wasted hours. Bad for Sweden’s standing in science; worse for people in low-income countries. For shame, @SwedishPM @matsperspektiv @JohanForssell

I realized I’m proficient in zero languages: Only used with family, the vocabulary of my native Catalan has suffered. My native Castellano is full of Mexican phrases from my friends. I struggle conveying humour and subtleties in English. And I have the Swedish level of my 3-yo.

This is Rose Avenue near San Francisco. A quiet residential neighborhood, it looks like life on either side of the street should be pretty similar. But it turns out that opportunities and access to public goods are dramatically different. What's going on?

@profnavaashraf , @BauNatalie , @DrNathanNunn , @AlesVoena (2020) is excellent to highlight that the effects on educational investments may vary by the practice of local customs, like the bride price. The model clarifies the non-obvious channels for this heterogeneity. (12/12)

I also loved the "Fantástico" TV program on Sunday. Each documentary segment was insightful, and the one on racism in Spain was extremely well-done and documented. Bonus: They talk in an extremely clear and slow Portuguese; ideal for anyone wanting to practice the language!

This ⬇️. 1st year was very intense for me, and it was during a "normal year". I wouldn't have passed my final exams without endless hours of group work with @VictoriaMarone_ , @MsdJ29 , and many others. These must have been extremely challenging months for many PhD students. (1/3)

I BARELY passed the 1st year of PhD. Studying together with classmates was critical! If it had been socially distanced I would have failed. #EconTwitter , if your Dept is planning on a normal round of quals, you should have a serious conversation abt whether that's a good idea.

Credit constraints affect educational decisions, and cash transfers (CT) are powerful solutions to this barrier. Baird, McIntosh, and @BerkOzler12 (2011) is a great paper to motivate the discussion on the relative effectiveness of conditional CT vs unconditional CT. (4/12)
