Neighborhoods matter less to a child’s success than what his parents do, @HeckmanEquation & @EshaghniaSadegh argue, debunking the "ZIP code is destiny” idea. In reality, outcomes are due to attributes & actions of parents who self-sort into neighborhoods.

2/2 Blaming Chinese trade is "misdiagnosing the problem and pursuing the wrong solutions. Tariffs on Chinese goods might bring back a few factory jobs, but they will raise prices for everyone and hurt U.S. businesses that rely on imports,” Heckman and Fang write.

Claims that surging Chinese imports cost millions of manufacturing jobs overstate the economic harm, @heckmanequation and Hangming Fang write. The job loss was largely local and temporary; cheaper inputs and goods boosted employment and consumer welfare.

There already exists an excellent economics paper by Dubois, @ashdgandhi and @shoshievass on this (disastrous) economic policy. The equilibrium result will be only slightly lower prices in the US but much higher prices everywhere else.
