Apologies to anyone in recent weeks who followed me for political/trade union activism and now finds themselves bombarded with gaming/comic/wrestling chat.
This is my life and you have to take the greeting at geek things interspersed with shouting at the state of the country.
HANG ON! They are lighting up Kelvingrove Park with diesel generators?
How come whenever women's groups asked for this citing personal safety + past attacks on women they've been told to sod off because wildlife would be disturbed/expense but it magically appeared for
#Cop26
?!
I had a miscarriage this week, it's not my first, but it is the first one I have had with anti-abortion protestors holding "vigils" outside what is a maternity hospital at what is the most vulnerable times in many women's lives.
Hate's a strong word, but I feel it this week.
@ScotTories
I mean, there are a fair few of us in the SNP you could have chosen to hate on, but you picked the only non-white and first Muslim cabinet minister in the Scottish Government to name here- not even the leader.
What do you think this demonstrates about your thought process here?
👋 Hi, I’m Kirsteen Fraser, & it’s an absolute honour to be elected National Equalities Convener of
@theSNP
There’s work to be done, there’s trust to rebuild & a feeling of safety and inclusion to bolster.
We can do it, & I will do everything I can to achieve it.
Thank you
I’m not sure why some think that a new leader means you can punt
@theSNP
2021 manifesto into the long grass and lurch to the right without consequences.
That’s not how democracy works, we have a mandate to deliver a progressive agenda- that’s what Scotland voted for.
Crazy.
@shoogle_mac
Exhibit B: Kelvingrove park being well lit.
I have lost count of the number of times women and student groups have asked for better lighting in the park and Kelvin Way and were told it wasn't feasible but now it suddenly is?

A fatal assumption that many die hard independence at any cost supporters make is they assume all other yes supporters are like them.
If an independent Scotland risks being unsafe for rights of women, LGBTQ+, refugees or progressive why would you risk voting for it?
@shoogle_mac
I find it irritating that all the things we're told we can't have such as increased public transport, travelcards have all magically appeared and will magically disappear in two weeks' time. I feel like I'm an inconvenience to the powers that be just for just living in the city.
No Joanna, you are misrepresenting the purpose of ethical therapy. You are going into this with the presumption that being trans is a mental health disorder.
It is not and no ethical therapist would judge a client in this way.

For clarity. Us for them are a shower of social media roasters who think teachers and their loved ones should martyr themselves to teach their children because they don’t want to take parental responsibility.
Kate Forbes isn’t being criticised for her faith or being religious. There are plenty of folk who are religious who welcome LGBT folk.
She’s being criticised on policy positions that she has personally stated in interviews.
It seems like a good point to remind folk that SNP members overwhelmingly voted in favour of buffer zones, protecting services, ensuring access to 24 weeks, and ensuring anyone who can become pregnant feels safe that their rights to reproductive healthcare would be protected.
Flying visit to a rammed Buchanan St steps before heading back to the RAH. The world is watching as Scotland reflects on today’s Supreme Court decision.
Hope and democracy in the face of Westminster govt’s indifference and contempt for democracy will win out.
Keep the heid.
You are not a feminist if you want to deny young women and girls information about their bodies, sexual health, or how to recognise abuse or coercion.
Denying young people information about sexual health isn't safeguarding, its neglect.
Yes, yes he did.
Boris Johnson is a school bully over-promoted to the role of Prime Minister.
He lacks the maturity and self-awareness to ever govern competently. His cruel nature was evident from the start and it's telling he resorts to jibes.
Time to resign
@BorisJohnson
I'll be honest, if I wasn't from Scotland seeing this number of various assembled emergency service vehicles would make me think there had been a terrorist attack or horrific incident with many dead or injured.
No, it's just Rangers fans kicking off
WTF DO WE PUT UP WITH THIS?
Thank you for the well wishes, but I'm very lucky that I have good folks around me in what has been a year from hell and a very supportive partner at a vulnerable time in my life. Not everyone has that and I can't make clear enough my contempt for these predators sitting at QUEH.
I think party members have the right to know why time after time little to no action has been taken to tackle elected members such as Joanna Cherry who espouse blatant bigotry, oppose established party policy, risk public harm, and continually bring the
@theSNP
into disrepute.
Genuinely pissed off for the
@scottishgreens
.
I would argue that if it hadn’t been for fash interference we would have two green MSP’s on the Glasgow list.
I’ll be writing a complaint to the Electoral Commission and if you care about democracy so should you.
The Scottish Greens were 1,000 votes shy of beating the Tories to the final seat in the Glasgow Region.
The 'Independent Green Voice' got 2,000, much higher than any of the other crank parties.
I think it's fair to say that voter confusion has cost us a second seat in Glasgow.
Well, it's 10 days to conference, so I suppose I should take this moment to say that I am standing for
@theSNP
Equalities Convenor.
Is it ok for the opening line of your manifesto to be I like a challenge?
While I don't wish to detract from all the posts about academic promotions it would be lovely if
@UofGlasgow
remembers that MPA staff exist and have no promotion schemes or workload model.
After a very tough two years these staff feel burnt out + underappreciated.
#JoinAUnion
Finding it kinda weird that people on here seem to think terrorising women by threatening to release their identities to an unpredictable internet mob isn’t a violent act.
I’m struggling to get over Arlene Foster accusing anyone of being anti everything when she was a leader of the DUP, a party that was steadfast against LGBTQ+ and abortion rights and had an MP go on an anti BLM huff over too many black people being on Songs of Praise.
Ridiculous.
Pardon me, but I don't want to hear any more excuses on why changes can't be made to help women and victims of GBV feel safer walking the streets because it seems the will and the money is found very easily when it comes to putting on a good front for the rest of the world.
As a party we in the SNP would be a lot healthier and less susceptible to bigot hysterics if we had an independent disciplinary procedures free from party personalities or internal party politics. Internal conduct proceedings just ain't working.
Being a woman who so happens to work in politics doesn't automatically mean you are a feminist. Some of the strongest anti-feminism rhetoric and anti-woman policies we see come from women.
I’m running for
@theSNP
Mational Equalities Convener. For too long, far right rhetoric has been allowed to gain a foothold with the party. We can quash it, but we need to act, to educate and do so decisively. No one should feel unsafe in our party.
It’s official! 🇪🇸🏳️⚧️
The lower house of the Spanish parliament has passed one of the most ambitious self-ID bills in Europe. The Senate is expected to follow suit in a few weeks.
You can't consent to conversion therapy.
It is fraud, it is unethical and completely devoid of any clinical evidence to be anything other than harmful.
It's intent isn't to help someone accept themselves, it's to destroy them and chance of self acceptance they might have had.
It's one thing to feel stuck in a room, but the door is unlocked and you can leave anytime; it's another to be trapped in a room with no way out and be held there by a faceless entity.
This is not a union of equal partners, it's not democracy, and everyone can see that now.
Lorna is right.
Scotland will be bringing this in soon despite the efforts of those recycling the moral panics of the 80/90's against trans people and stirring up hate and stigma.
#TransRightsAreHumanRights
Wonderful news. Scotland will bring this in soon.
Self id is normal. NZ joins Ireland, Australia, Belgium, some Canadian provinces and others. Trans people deserve the same rights that everyone else has. All humans have the same human rights.

I should have something to eloquent to say but I had to dash out the hall as I thought I was going to boke with nerves!

The reality of shouting INDEPENDENCE FIRST constantly is you alienate the very groups who you need to convince to make it happen.
Yes, it’s slow, yes it’s frustrating but the alternative is constant social discord and human misery.

I've contacted
@theSNP
National Secretary to indicate my support for publishing membership figures.
I have absolute confidence in our democratic process and in our National Secretary, who is an unpaid volunteer like all of us juggling work, family, and other commitments.
As a candidate for
@theSNP
's Equalities Convener, I wholeheartedly support the call for an independent investigation.
We need to be honest and reflect on whether our processes and policies work as intended to allow all members to feel safe and active within the SNP.
We reiterate our commitment to the health & wellbeing of young trans people across Scotland.
Conversation therapy is an abhorrent practice that should be outlawed.
This is
@theSNP
policy. Our party values must be upheld if we are to achieve an equal, independent Scotland.
UPDATE: This is Kelvingrove park tonight, where people are being sent on ridiculous diversions, in near pitch darkness aside from very selective positioning of lights. This isn't safe, and it shouldn't be happening. Come on

Conversion therapy is a form of torture. Across the world there have been instances where LGBT+ people have been forced to undergo extreme physical and psychological harm.
Conversion practices should be banned and recognised as harmful and unethical.

Yup. This includes the lowest-paid members in my branch,
@UNISON_UofG
.
Actually livid at the mental gymnastics when my members, some of whom are barely scraping by, are fighting for better in the pishing rain on a picket while they bleat on about strike privilege.
Cowards.
At my university, some of the lowest paid workers including cleaners and caterers have recently voted for strike action and administration staff have recently been on strike. Are they also exercising their ‘privilege’ by striking or does that only apply to academics?!
GRA reform bill stage 1 this afternoon in the Scottish Parliament.
GRR was an
@theSNP
manifesto pledge back in 2016 and also in 2021. So, today is the end of a long journey and meaningful for those who believe in equality and human rights in Scotland.
#TransRightsAreHumanRights
Wish I could say I was surprised at this but I’m not. It feels like many parts of Scotland are trapped in this feeling of exceptionalism that’s convinced some people that racism and bigotry don’t happen in Scotland, that we are immune.
It’s still here and we still need work.
🔺 NEW: James McAvoy has told how he was “absolutely shocked and dismayed” by the racial abuse his female co-stars suffered “on a daily basis” during his run of Cyrano de Bergerac in Glasgow and how he was delighted to leave the city
Human rights and equality aren’t things you can pop on a shelf and hope for the best. We live in a world where these rights are hard won and constantly under attack from the far right, the culture war of the Tories and the influences of international politics.
Perhaps we wouldn't be having this unfold across the media and Twitter if we took candidate vetting more seriously?
Vetting is supposed to be a buffer to prevent candidates who are inconsistent or at odds with party policy from becoming elected representatives.
Even in the best of times, the
@CitAdviceScot
Bureaux are a vital service, in a pandemic with some of the worst socio-economic uncertainty in living memory? They are an absolute necessity.

Some parts of Scottish Twitter are giving me heavy flashbacks to a Uni Open Day I worked a few years ago where I had to explain what a dental dam was to a scandalised parent of a 17-year-old who discovered the free condoms/lube/dam kiosk. It was an experience.
Commentators: unions are holding the country to ransom by striking over COP26.
Trade unionist: that is literally the point of a strike.
Commentators: but it’s embarrassing us on the world stage.
Trade unionists: failing to resolve months long labour disputes is embarrassing
Something to be proud of on a Monday morning. The lowest paid are now set to receive a permanent £2,332 annual pay rise.
This doesn't mean the University of Glasgow can sit back and consider this a job done. Workers at Glasgow need serious and urgent change.

🧵We can announce this morning after a comprehensive ballot that
@UNISON_UofG
members at the

This is a clear victory for our members who took strike action. 1/

Hotels around Glasgow are now lying empty, they should be requisitioned to house vulnerable people at risk. Even at the best of times, no one should have to sleep rough, let alone at this time of local and global emergency.
@GlasgowCC
The point of Scottish independence is a complete reset, which is why many support it. People don't want an Indy🏴re-run of the failed economic policies of decades of Westminster govts that destroyed communities & living standards.
We can do better with fairer taxation as a start
A lot of people have asked me my views of the leadership contest. Truthfully, I have been incredibly hurt so far. Hurt originating with the statements
@_KateForbes
has made and since stood by. I, like most people in Scotland, could not care less about someone’s religion. (1/10)
@MhairiHunter
I’ve never seen anything so mired in spite, and hatred in my adult life. It just seems to be revelling in causing pain and distress and I can’t get my head around it.
As a former SNP organiser and activist in Dumbarton CA I need to know how this election battle goes down.
Please universe, give me the one win of seeing Jackie Baillie being directed towards the exit.
Please leave Caster Semenya alone. She's a cis woman whose been dragged into today's GRR debate because a bunch of narrow minded racist bigots see her as an easy target as she doesn't fit their narrow definition of femininity.
I would rather people - inc politicians- felt able to set firm boundaries to protect their health and wellbeing rather than working themselves into the ground and being completely ineffectual.
Our unhealthy approach to work and glorifying burnout isn't a positive.
But they ask; why don’t women report sexual assault or rape?
Because they see police will literally drag away women trying to hold a vigil for a woman alleged to have been murdered by a serving police officer and they haven’t one iota of self awareness of how horrific that is.
I don't get a vote in this, but Alison would make an excellent leader at Westminster if she's elected, and I am beyond pleased to see her throw her hat in the ring given her strong record.
A pragmatic, progressive, and decisive voice for women and Scotland. Best of luck!

Without doubt. But the absurdity of their demands needs called out.
Teachers are not expendable.
Teachers loved ones are not expendable.
They want to be in classrooms- teaching face to face, but they should not be expected to sacrifice health or risk death to do so.
@Tucker5law
@PeatWorrier
I used to really look up to Salmond, didn’t get the hate back then. I shook his hand, had photos taken with him at events at SNP conference. Even cried at his resignation speech but now I have nothing but the strongest contempt every time he slithers out from under his rock
This was shortly after two of my aunts died. We couldn’t go to their funerals.
My cousin was so traumatised by his mother’s death and we struggled to support him with the restrictions. He completed suicide less than 2 months later.
They don’t care what we’ve lost or our pain
Boris Johnson: 'I can understand how infuriating it must be to think that the people who have been setting the rules, have not been following the rules, because I was also furious.'
If you can’t, or refuse to defend them, or push them forward, then you are an unfit leader. And you shouldn’t be surprised when you are called out as such.
@AGlasgowGirl
Fair play to them both. I’m pretty anti monarchy but if you are willing to walk away, pay back the money for your royal home and give up your titles than all the best to you. Shows strength of character in my view 🤷♀️
Feel like we need a version for the University of Glasgow.
Did you lose your sense of joy, optimism, and hope at Glasgow? No one gets out of here without becoming a cynic.
Tbh, I don't really care about Craig Murray getting the jail. Salmond falling into a pit of oblivion or WoS working himself into a frothing cardiac arrest.
What really mattered was 9 women who trusted the legal + political system & at every turn were failed by it.
This is now a mass trauma event.
The actions and indifference of the Tories with Downing St parties are now causing intense emotional anguish to those who weren't able to support their loved ones at end of life, or get the closure of funeral gatherings.
Beginning of the end
'I feel like an idiot.'
This funeral officer who stopped family from attending cremations broke down in tears wishing he was 'more lenient' as the government partied away.
@mrjamesob
The bare minimum you should be able to expect from a 21st century leader is full throated support for abortion rights, equal marriage, and the advancement of human rights rather than throwing the towel in saying job done.
Only then, you can honestly say you stand for all.
Some personal news, I'm pleased and proud to say that I will be moving into a new role at

Literally one of the most boring administrative processes you can imagine has been twisted and misrepresented to the point many in parliament don't actually understand what they are arguing against.
Some of it is malice, the other special ingredient is incompetence.
I was in parliament for equal marriage passing and you could feel the momentousness of the occasion. Conversely, what should have been a fairly nondescript piece of legislating surrounding the amendment of a piece of paper was instead turned into a focal point for society's hate.
My favourite question so far of my campaign for
@theSNP
National Equalities Convener has been whether I support independence...
Not sure why I would have been a member of the SNP for over a decade if I didn't but if not that's a hell of a long game I've been playing.

The Tories will have a leadership election online within the space of a week, yet anti-trade union legislation bars unions from balloting their members online for industrial action.
I laughed so hard I choked on my coffee.
The irony of a group of people co-opting the Handmaids Tale - a story about sex slavery, dehumanisation and forced pregnancy while holding a placard saying what makes women women is being able to give birth.
I mean where do we start?
Some of you are pretending you were never hormonal teenagers and it shows.
Teenagers talk, think and have sex, it's better that we empower them with the knowledge about safe sex and healthy relationships than denying reality.
It's 2021 not 1951
In the past, I was always a bit sad to see people move to the Scottish Greens from the SNP.
It felt a little like losing a friend even though I’m fairly green leaning.
I feel absolutely nothing for those jumping onto the Alba party whose manifesto consists of one man’s ego
Just a word of caution, we haven’t avoided a culture war in the SNP. We have a new leader, but we still need to resolve internal concerns. If anything we’ve staved it off for now.
We’re not immune to disinformation, inequality and bigotry and we need to figure that out pronto.
This was absolutely foreseeable and was a massive misstep.
There are many who would have voted SNP for constituency and Scottish Green for list and we’ve spat in their face as a party.
WTF did anyone involved in this decision expect?!
Green party source suggesting they will “absolutely not” u-turn on their decision to vote against First Minister Humza Yousaf in a no confidence vote next week.
They are meeting this morning.
