That's not all we have to do, of course, as I am explained in the article. But it is a crucial part. We are not in a 1930s in Germany right now, far from it. But that's precisely why we need to take the lessons of history now and act to stop us getting there.

The fascists use these protests to draw people into their orbit and radicalise them. They use them to harden up their core by inciting arson and violence against migrants and other marginalised people. This is how they gain confidence. When they can do this unopposed, they grow.

Their argument goes that by countering them, you are "giving them oxygen" and pushing ordinary people into their hands. It's the opposite that is the case. Most people who go on anti-migrant rallies are not far right or fascist. But there are fascists organising at the core.

🧵Students are in a battle with a university that has disgracefully maintained its ties with a genocidal, settler colonial, apartheid state. That's what it is, a battle. I wouldn't expect a baby blueshirt to acknowledge that, but those campaigning will, and will act accordingly.

Given von der Leyen's actions over the past 6 months we can only assume that when she says "it's an example for the world", she sees it as an example to emulate, not one to learn from and ensure it doesn't happen again.

Private companies reap huge profits out of misery inflicted on asylum seekers by Gov. A scandal that the Left has been highlighting for years. Let people work, let them be part of society. Enough empty homes to house everyone. Article here from 2019:

@DJ_Dermo07 US troops out of Shannon, 100%. I'm for occupied territories bill as a first step, but that's basically just a boycott on goods from illegal settlements in West Bank and Gaza. The entire state of Israel needs to be completely isolated with a total boycott, divestment, sanctions.

You hear this kind of "expertise" echoed by FG-FF. We have zero influence and therefore can't do anything. Try it. Try sanctions, try expelling Israeli ambassador, try stopping US military coming through Shannon. It's morally the right thing. Let's see if it has an effect or not.

Lots of talk re Ireland's position on Middle East by politicians and in media. Question for context: what are the positions of Denmark and Czechia, same-sized countries? Answer: Few know because they, like Ireland, have zero influence on conflicts such as Sudan, Yemen and Gaza.

2. Some of us joined protests with Sudanese people in Dublin in solidarity with their revolution against dictatorship a few years ago. Revolution was brutalised by forces funded by EU. Never saw Dan take issue with this. Sudan is only useful for these hacks for whataboutery.

So one response to the fine can be to sneer at a union that is fighting alongside the students it represents to end Trinity's complicity in genocide & apartheid. The other is to recognise the battle you're in & keep building fight for divestment. And beat the fine in the process.

In fact, during the campaign, students' horizons were raised & we were making much more radical demands of Trinity than simply scrapping the fee. Trinity conceded, not cos we were good & polite & did things the right way, but cos direct actions, occupations & protests forced them
