2017: England cricket 🥇
2018: England netball 🥇
Three glorious moments in sport. Three glorious moments in women's team sport. Three game changing moments.
First time in 21 years there’s been a Wimbledon men’s singles champion not called Federer, Djokovic, Nadal or Murray. Incredible coolness from a 20 year old. 👏
This is how I will remember Marieke Vervoort, living every little moment. You can hear again our documentary from 2016, about her decision to sign euthanasia papers, on
@bbc5live
after midnight. Cheers, Marieke. We’ll never forget you 🥂
Thank you,
@HomeOfCricket
. My cricket loving Dad, who took me to my first ever Ashes Test here in 1977, would have been absolutely chuffed. As were my brothers, my nephew and I.
#LoveLords
Five years ago today, we lost my Dad, Colin Oldroyd. He introduced me to cricket. He loved his family, good wine, bad puns. And being an MCC member. We sent him on his way with his red pass in his pocket, to ease his way into the Great Celestial Pavilion.
One of the most remarkable people I have ever had the privilege of meeting, Marieke Vervoort, has died. World champion, Paralympic champion, and extraordinary human being.
Incredibly proud of all my BBC radio colleagues who delivered outstanding coverage of the last 11 days across networks. A true privilege to work with such talented broadcasters, producers, technical, and back up teams. A career-defining time for all of us.
I love the fact that there are kids who’ve been watching over the last few days who, in 50 years, will tell their children and grandchildren that they saw
@root66
bat and
@jimmy9
bowl. 🐐🐐
#INDvENG
Sport is about winning. But it’s also about making people care. And it feels as if more people than ever before watched and cared about a women’s football game tonight. Which is no consolation for the
@Lionesses
but it’s something.
If there are kids in that crowd at the Oval, or watching on TV tonight, who say “I want more of this”, then
#TheHundred
is already a success. And if that leads to trying other formats, or wanting to play, then even better. It’s about the future of our wonderful game. 🏏
Always a sense of melancholy after my last cricket for the summer, even waking up to this view as I prepare to leave the bubble. Hope this strange and brilliant spell has given you some respite from reality, too. Love to all those who made it happen ❤️🏏
It’s a strange, solitary business getting up at 3.30 in the dark and doing cricket updates from my loft. But the excellent company of my
@bbctms
friends on the radio helps with the isolation, as it does for so many. Back at 4.10 tomorrow.
Our 18 year old daughter can now start preparing for university.
In August 1918 her great-grandfather Stanley, also aged 18, was preparing to go into battle in France.
A century on, how lucky our teenagers are.
#LestWeForget
#ALevelsResultsDay2018
Didn’t notice this at Trent Bridge but this feels significant: the match programme for this Test series specifies England Men v India Men. No longer an assumption that this is a male-only sport.
Well, that was just remarkable. Test cricket, eh? Positive declarations, positive batting, brilliant fight back by Australia’s bowlers, brave catching, nailbiting finish. And
@Heatherknight55
is the 👸
#Ashes
Have just, on the Cricket Social, quoted
@itsmattchin
as my source of info about Axar Patel. And tried to explain the concept of Mattchin to former IPL batsman
@abhijjw
. I don’t feel as if my journalistic integrity has been compromised AT ALL
#tailendersoftheworlduniteandtakeover
From the escapism of the spring lockdown replays of great matches, to the wonderful weirdness of bubble life, to an autumnal T20 Finals Day,
@bbctms
has been a friend and companion to so many this year. It’s a privilege to be a tiny part of it. Here’s to 2021 🏏🥂
It’s been a tough year. We’ve covered more sadness than I can ever remember as a broadcaster. But every weekend, even at 200 miles distance, I’ve been cheered up by being on the radio with this bloke. Last show of 2020 today
@bbc5live
, so happy Christmas
@chriswarburton_
Sonja is one of the most professional, best informed and hard working journalists I know. People who abuse her for doing her job need to take a long hard look at themselves.
Waffle apologises for interrupting the
@bbc5live
news bulletin at 9.30. But at least it meant I didn’t miss my package being delivered. And it’s a blooming miracle that in over 3 months of broadcasting from home, it hasn’t happened before.
This daft podcast has brought so much genuine joy over the last 99 episodes. It’s also been the gateway which allowed me to share my love of cricket with my daughter, as my Dad shared his love of cricket with me. So happy 99* to the whole Tailenders family.
Oh man.
@gregjames
has written about Tailenders reaching 99 and I’ve just read it with a huge, stupid grin on my face. It’s been a complete saving grace over the last few years, I’m very grateful for the good times. Many more to come!!
@jimmy9
@itsmattchin
Have had a lovely day reading the responses to this. As I said - I never set out to blaze trails, rather to do what I loved. But thrilled if what I’ve done has helped other brilliant women follow their dreams, too. Equality and quality are not mutually exclusive.
It’s 25 years since
@EllyOldroyd
became the first female presenter of Sports Report. She’s blazed a trail for women in sports broadcasting, and in the new Radio Times, she tells me what it took to do it.
Have just spent 40 minutes talking to two of my cricketing heroes, Mike Brearley and David Gower, about a third, Bob Willis. It’ll be available as a
@bbctms
podcast in a little while. So many warm memories of a remarkable bowler and a lovely man.
#RIPBob
Cricket on
@BBCOne
on a boiling Sunday afternoon. Closing the curtains and ignoring the sunshine outside. Strong memories of watching the John Player League with my Dad.
#bbccricket
I’ve seen Eddie Izzard, The Specials and The Wiggles here. Can’t stop laughing at the fact that Hammersmith Apollo is sold out for my favourite podcast.

Have reflected a lot this week on the 5Live birthday, and why I’m still here after 30 years when others have moved on. Basically: the places, the people, the variety of challenges, and of course, our listeners. This explains a bit more:
Last time I spent my birthday at a Test Match was Edgbaston, the day David Gower made his debut. Feels emotional to be here working for
@bbc5live
at
@HomeOfCricket
on a perfect June day with spectators back at last.
#ENGvNZ
No one was more important to Rachael than her beloved Steve and Freddie.
But
@bbc5live
is an extended family, and this feels like a family bereavement.
#RIPRachael
#YouMeBigC
Mother to Freddie.
Wife to Steve.
Our treasured colleague Rachael Bland has died.
She inspired so many with her blogs, the chart-topping podcast
#YouMeBigC
and certainly put the can in cancer.
We will miss her dearly.
Seems like a small miracle. Spring is here and I got the jab today. Thank you to the incredible scientists, NHS staff and volunteers. We’re getting closer.
Went to Italia 90. Went to Euro 96. Spent this afternoon drinking in the sunshine surrounded by young adults who weren’t born when Skinner + Baddiel did the original 3 Lions, and have no concept of 30 yrs of hurt, but for them it’s coming home, and how wonderful is that?
#ENGSWE
So impressed listening to my
@bbc5live
colleagues discussing Rachael’s death on air this last 24 hrs. Not in hushed tones but with emotion, rawness, humour. We will all experience the death of loved ones and learning how to talk in the early stages of bereavement is so helpful.
Many happy memories of being at this place last summer in the cricket bubble, when we and the players had it to ourselves. But now, a year on, this place, sun setting, filled with passionate fans. It’s how sport should be.
#ENGvsPAK
@Rachael_Hodges
Dear Rachael, you have lived a life to inspire millions. Your many friends will be there for Steve and Freddie. Love and peace and prayers from all of us xxx
Unexpectedly close up to witness an emotional farewell to
@Middlesex_CCC
by
@finnysteve
. Many double-pat-releases. Hopefully Middlesex’s loss will be
@bbctms
’s gain (and Sussex’s, of course).
If he's still got the game to take a seeded player to 5 sets over 4 hours, while injured, and after a long break from competitive tennis, why would Andy Murray NOT want to try as hard as he can to make it to Wimbledon?
#AusOpen
#bbctennis
Even when I’m at home on a freezing January morning, having been up at 3.30am, I can’t quite believe I get paid for watching cricket. (Day 2 mug bought in Adelaide, 2017/18 Ashes, when the hotel only had silly little white cups.)
Multiscreening to bring you updates into
@bbc5live
on day 1 of Sri Lanka v England. Live text
@BBCSport
,
@bbctms
on the radio. It’s not Galle, but I have my favourite tea mug.
#SLvsENG
My new favourite programme is The Repair Shop. Talented craftspeople with old fashioned skills restoring much-loved objects which might otherwise have hit the skip. Warm, kind and an antidote to the throwaway culture.
#TheRepairShop
Find someone who looks at you like
@finnysteve
looks up to
@glennmcgrath11
. Really sweet to hear Finny on
@bbctms
talking about his admiration for Glenn as a young bowler growing up.
#Ashes
Contents of the work bag after a Test Match summer. Eight of them, in two months. (Hence the throat lozenges.)
But what an amazing privilege to be there on air throughout for
@bbc5live
and the
@bbctms
team.
#BBCCricket
Was already an emotional day, seeing our elder daughter graduate from
@UniofExeter
. And then reminded, in a touching tribute from the Vice-Chancellor, that
@bowelbabe
was an alumna, too. Raised a glass to them both.
Should have been walking through the Grace Gates
@HomeOfCricket
about now for the first time this season - Middx v Worcs. Goodness knows when I’ll get to use this, if at all, this summer. But what is more important is that we stay well, go well, and look after each other 🏏
Hearing
@annaefoster
saying goodbye to the
@bbc5live
listeners is properly emotional. She's a brilliant journalist, a terrific presenter, and will be amazing in her new job as Middle East Correspondent. Sending all the love and luck in the world 😘
On train back to London with teenagers who’ve been to the Leeds Festival. Feel mentally as if I’ve been sleeping in a tent and partying all night too. Breakfast buffet at the Aussie team hotel was quiet. Thank goodness for a 10 day break before Old Trafford. But what memories.
Moved home studio to different corner of the bedroom. Looking forward to the day breaking over my head as
@NickyAACampbell
and I bring you
@bbc5live
Breakfast. Have emergency snacks.

#WFH
It’s been an extraordinary four mornings on
@bbc5live
Breakfast. We’ve told unimaginable stories of bravery and suffering. Thank you to our incredible correspondents, and our talented producers for their hard work, sensitivity and care in bringing those stories to air.
Came to say good morning to Bob on my walk. What a day we had remembering him on Tuesday. And wonderful to see the amounts raised for
@bobwillisfund
#BlueForBob
💙
Have shared some joyous moments on air with this man. But nothing has made me happier than having
@campbelldarren
back in the
@5liveSport
studio tonight, looking and sounding so well.
Listening to the
@bbctms
World Cup Final replay (again) and making lemon drizzle cake to take to Old Trafford for
@MichaelVaughan
. That’s my Tuesday sorted.
Love that Twitter is full of clips of our brilliant BBC local radio colleagues just doing their jobs this morning. Pretty much everything I know about broadcasting I learnt in Worcester (Radio Wyvern) and Shropshire (
@BBCShropshire
).
