I think some people don’t realise that from 2012 until basically the pandemic lots of “trades” (like journalism!) had apprenticeships dry up as we pushed for more university attendees. I’d have had to find nearly £10,000 with no help to do a journalism course outside uni in 2016.

I don’t get this take whenever I see it. Much like the paternity campaign that has gathered steam I saw this campaign at grassroots back near the start of this year and knew one mention in parliament and it would start to take off. And so it has.

If you want a sense of the feeling amongst graduates then the tone Oli strikes here sums it up. Many feel miss-sold and frustrated with politicians who paid nothing tell them it’s fair. (Usual caveat to not read this as for/against his point)

Not saying Steve is wrong but the idea that no one with naff grades went to university to get naff degrees in the 1980s and 90s is not true.

I think what a lot of people fail to realise is that this combined with more people going to university in the 2010s and the minimum wage rising and repayment thresholds freeze means there is half a generation paying 9% more tax than everyone else for all their working lives.
