Let's have a fun thread of people 'who can always tell' calling me a man. (Because when you talk about having PCOS asuch as I do this shit is funny as anything!)
I was a young carer. I looked after my mum and sometimes my sister as well. I was late a lot.
10 minute detention if you were late, 3 lates and you got an hour the following week.
"You need to be responsible."
No. I had responsibilities coming out my ears. What I needed was help.
Oh look it's 'brits don't eat spice' season.
1) We have millions of people from diaspora communities who very much do eat spices AND are every bit as British as me.
2) The concept of British food as bland comes from Victorian/Edwardian middle/upper class snobbery. 🧵 /1
All a 10 minute detention did was mean we ate late because I missed my train home which meant I had less time to do homework or I went to bed late. Which increased the chance of me oversleeping and being late.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

Hey
@AirCanada
if you broke a passenger's legs through your own negligence would you just offer them a $500 voucher? Because that's basically what you've done here.
Social transition generally includes things like:
-going by a different name
-changing hairstyle
-wearing different clothes
Imagine being told you couldn't use a nickname or cut/grow your hair unless your parents consented?
That is how demonised trans people are now.
Does PM agree it's "inappropriate for schools to encourage young people under the age of 18 to socially transition… without parental consent?” asks Andrew Bridgen
Rishi Sunak says, “I don’t think that’s acceptable, we must protect our children”
#PMQs
There are Terfs leafletting outside my hustings and I am shaking with anger. This place is my HOME. I have never felt unsafe living in Herne Hill as a trans person and they have no right to take that away from me.
I fought to try and get to school on time. I'd literally be in tears if I missed the train. I'd run so hard from the station I'd turn up dry heaving. I'd skip breakfast/showering literally anything to try and get out the door faster and it was never enough.
This is spreading so much more than I thought it would and I appreciate the kind words I've had more than I can say.
Fact is it's too late to help me but there are still thousands of young carers dealing with the same things I did and worse.

You have vast areas where you don't even have *sidewalks* how are you expecting kids who aren't old enough to drive to get to their friends? Levitation?
Please donate to charities like
@CarersUK
@CarersTrust
or others in your own area that help young carers. Speak to politicians and tell them to stand up for young carers now and in the future so they don't have to deal with what I did.
Someone made a complaint to the party about me using the word TERF 'Because it's a slur'. (This is hilarious because TERFs invented the word TERF to distinguish themselves from non TE RFs)
The complaint has been dismissed for the very simple reason that TERF isn't a slur.
So the idea of British food being bland hasn't been true since the 80's and even when it *WAS* true it was only true because:-
-Old money families wanted to be snobs.
-We're a northern European island and there was a war.
AND it was only actually true for less than a century. /9
If you look at British cookery from the middle ages onwards it is *heavily* spiced the upper classes put spices in bloody everything all the time, when we hit the Americas we nicked all those too (and sugar) because it transported well and made you look fancy AF. /2
I wish to be utterly clear here.
-Fair Play for Women are a hategroup.
-If you support them or think 'they have a point', 'we should listen to both sides', 'should be polite in disagreeing' then you are not a trans ally nor are you safe for trans people to be around.
They didn't even have the guts to ask a question despite turning up en masse and I hope it boils their piss no end that of around 15 candidates at that hustings the trans person was the ONLY one to even mention Violence against Women and Girls.
Suddenly there was a wild swerve the Upper classes dictated that spiced food unsettled the stomach and instead advocated 'clean' food, plain and simple, focusing on rare/choice meats and imported fruit and veg. The nouveau riche and aspirational middle classes followed suit /5
@DrMMGilchrist1
Being in care would have been worse- have you not seen the educational outcomes for care experienced kids?
We didn't need to be in care we needed social care support to help us at home and an education system that understood we were trying and gave us some flexibility.
Spices were a way of showing off because they cost MONEY so you used as much as you could afford. The whole Spice Road existed for getting spices to Europe. /3
So when people say "British food is boring" they are almost invariably looking at recipes for people who couldn't afford spices or the food of wealthy Edwardians who wouldn't eat them and it's just not reflective of British food for the last 30 years or so. /end
Bonus food fact- French people calling us Les Rosbifs comes from the fact that British cooks were so adept at cooking meat, especially on spits, that they became hugely in demand in the kitchens of the French Aristocracy.
This has blown up a bit! I don't really have anything to publicise but please consider making a donation to
@BrixSoupKitchen
who do amazing work feeding people fantastic food for free in my local community if you can!
As ships got bigger and faster spices became cheaper and easier to find and started being used by ordinary people (in smaller quantities because they're still pretty expensive but you see them a lot in celebratory recipes- mince pies, cristmas pudding, fruit cakes) /3
Gender Identity Clinics do not exist to encourage people (of any age) to transition any more than Fracture Clinics exist to encourage people to break their legs.
Then WW2 starts off. We are an island. We cannot grow a *lot* of spices. Of the ships that *can* get through the blockades they aren't prioritising getting spices over so there is literally no way for most people to get them. So we stop using them altogether. /6
Rationing doesn't end until the early 50's so it's still hard to make food interesting and then the people cooking are people who grew up without access to any of these things- it's not surprising they're unsure about using them. That takes you up to the 60's/70's /7
Spices kept getting cheaper and as education standards (and disposable income) went up use of spices went up too. Then in the late Victorian/late Edwardian era the upper classes realised spiced food had become common /4
My great grandpa grew up in India. He was absolutely not afraid of spice. The man used to curry anything he could get his hands on from all accounts (including tripe). My great grandma's cookbook includes curry recipes. Not to mention chutneys and pickles galore. /10
@MailSport
Why is when black people say they've missed out on stuff because of their race you accuse them of playing the race card and when a white guy does it it's a news story on how sad it is for him to be so oppressed?!
@wallabangcoco
@lounewton_
There was a couple in Stoke on trent years back who retired to a premier in iirc. Said it was cheaper than a care home, same amount of space still, breakfast included, no cleaning. They had a long stay discount and just paid every month and stayed in the same room.
Those are the people stayingq in hotels and eat at restaurants. So that's what they start serving. So that's what tourists and visitors are eating too. /6
I grew up around Brixton. My first child minder was Jamaican, my second childminder had a Trini husband. I grew up eating Jerk and pepper soup and all sorts of spiced and spicy foods quite happily (I still get cravings for Nanny Alma's dumplings 30 years on) /11
As the cost of air travel goes down though you get the rise of the package holiday and a *Lot* of these people are trying new foods. You get more migration, more cafes and restaurants serving diaspora food to those communities. /8
Boris Johnson is not acting like a child because children are still learning how to behave. He's acting like a rich white man who is used to being able to use money, power or charm to do whatever he wants and can't handle being told no.

I've used food banks and honestly when the only thing you have left is your pride god do you cling to it! You take care of your things because you can't afford to replace them. You dress the best you can because you don't want people like this woman to look down on you.

I had some teachers who were amazing- they'd let me off homework where they could or let me start homework in class. But there was no give in the system because 'it wouldn't be fair'.
@DrMMGilchrist1
Mum didn't expect us to do it but it needed to be done and every place with any statutory duty towards us wouldn't so we were fresh out of options.
Caring so much about women you go after my *MOTHER*. If you want to have an issue with me then fine I actually do not care. Leave my family the hell alone.
We fought the Governments on section 28, on civil partnerships, on an equal age of consent, on same sex marriage, on the Gender Recognition Act and I will fight them on this too. As a Non-binary trans person I demand my right to have my gender legally recognised.
@MattHancock
Matt. I work in the NHS. I live with & care for my severely disabled mother. When I got sick we barred her carers from the house & I took over. Through greyouts & struggling to breathe & tingling mouth & lips from hypoxia & nearly suffocating in my sleep we *still* isolated.

My contactless was playing up on Tuesday bloke behind me went 'excuse me I've got somewhere to be'
I mean so have I Dave but I thought 'hey you know what I'll spend 30 seconds standing at a tube barrier just to really mess with some random guys day.'
@DrMMGilchrist1
So your solution is to break up a loving family rather than the local authority provide a couple of hours support a day (literally having someone to get my mum up in the morning and make dinner at night would have solved like 80% of the problem)?
You get how that's worse right?
Watching Huw Edwards explain the NI Protocol and get the feeling he's struggling not to add "You bloody idiots" to the beginning, middle and end of every sentence 🤣🤣
Trans people told you this sort of thing would happen. It starts with this and it is going to end with someone getting seriously hurt or worse. This is what not challenging transphobia and bigotry takes you to.
This is England. This is Reading. This is people radicalised by online anti-LGBT+ propaganda and conspiracy theories hurling paedophilia and groomer slurs at parents taking their toddlers to the library

2003 friend of mine got her own flat at 16- we thought it was amazing she could do what she wanted- helped her decorate & everything. Looking back 20 years on (and having been a Youth Worker/worked in FE) and realised how totally messed up it was and how badly it could have gone
Is it as distressing as having your ability to access public spaces, your employment law protections, your personal safety and your Article 8 rights threatened by a government created body Baroness?
You cannot ask someone to be polite to someone who thinks they shouldn't exist.
We cannot, will not and should not be expected to reason with the boot stepping on our faces.
It is that simple.
@EHRCChair
You do realise the effect of this would be to stop any trans person in the UK getting a GRC because we are required to use single sex spaces to get one right?
We've taken the government to court and won on this before and we'll do it again.
Well fun as being the main character on twitter has been I have to be up at 4:30 to go save some lives for the weekend so I'm going to bed. Thanks to every single person who's expressed their support- it genuinely means worlds to me.

Not like that we shouldn't. "Do you have one?" Is a reasonable question. "Would you like one?" Is a reasonable follow up.
Continuing to push after that point speaks to someone making an assumption about the value of a disabled person's life.
This group is angry they have been asked to follow the same rules as everyone else. Nobody is allowed to leaflet inside our venue. They have been leafletting outside and were asked, to move further from the doors so as not to be in the way of people
Lib Dems have overwhelmingly voted to back Universal Basic Income. I can't express how thrilled I am by this. It has the potential to make so much difference to people's lives!!
But anyway TERF isn't a slur, the party agrees it isn't a slur and chucking in complaints to the party about me or anyone else using it isn't going to get you anything so find another hobby.
Whilst the complainant did manage to use the right pronouns for me throughout the complaint (it's actually not hard right?!) They also only referred to me by my surname which lent the slightly surreal impression I was being complained about by an upper class victorian.
If a man really wants to attack a woman in a toilet, he's not waiting 3-6 months for a GRC.
He's waiting 3-6 minutes for a mop and to print off a sign. "These toilets are cleaned by male staff."
Grandparents attending a school track meet in Kelowna stopped the event and demanded a 9 year-old female student be examined to make sure they weren't a boy competing in a girls event.
As Chair of LGBT+ Lib Dems I'd invite
@peterkyle
to reconsider this completely baseless accusation. Especially while hs party leadership is currently throwing trans people under the bus for the sake of vote grubbing.

Nobody is giving these spaces away. They are being taken from trans women who have been using them since before Tonia was born.

and

will always defend the rights trans people have enjoyed for decades.
It's time Labour stopped pandering to the right.
A number of liberals and especially
@timfarron
need to understand there is no room for 'respectful disagreement' when one side of the argument is 'we want to bar you from going out in public or leave you to enjoy the medical effects of not being able to use public toilets safely'
@SarahLudford
Was there a choice about going into coalition? Probably not. Was there a choice about what we did *in* coalition? Absolutely. We let people get hurt, people like me. All those people (and I) deserve to know why we allowed that to happen. Why were we acceptable collateral damage?
My bus driver is so lost right now. Got diverted from going up from Aldwych to Holborn. Fair enough. But he took a wrong turn on the diversion. We have been up Tottenham Court Road(both ways) then piccadilly circus
Look at the crowds at the vigils for Brianna. Look at the numbers who turn up to Terf protests.
There is so much more good in the world than bad. There is so much more love than hate.

So instead of going.
"Why do you have rape alarms?"
"We're a night safety team from the council. We hand them out to women to help keep them safe."
"Ah fair enough on you go then keep up the good work."
You arrested them.
There was no need for it.
If you think your kid has

either you didn't notice their distress or they were so worried about your reaction they hid it from you.

. I'm proud to be the first openly Non-Binary person to run for the Greater London Authority.
It's vital trans people are able take our place in public life- Politics, Journalism, the Civil Service nowhere should be closed off to us.
Why does every newcomer to this whole nightmare think they are the first person ever to suggest talking with GC's?
No Frank it totally didn't occur to any of us to ask them not to hate us based on groundless fears with no evidence- thank god you came along when you did!!
Thank you to everyone who has had such kind things to say about my summation speech to the trans inclusivity motion at
#LDConf
. I really, truly appreciate all your support.
Lots of comments along the "Why are so many more people allergic and intolerant to things now? Why wasn't it like this 50/100 years ago? What happened!?"
Well mostly what happened was we died young Karen.
Love Emma Raducanu as I do but she is NOT Britain's 1st woman to win a grand slam in 53 years. Jordanne Wiley won in 2015.
Being a wheelchair user does not make her less of a woman or less of a winner & Emma's achievement is impressive enough without erasing Jordanne.
So
@EHRC
if a cafe has space for two single stalled gendered facilities or one disabled toilet which is also Gender Neutral will you be insisting they breach their duty to provide facilities for disabled people under the EA2010?

and I'm going to to keep on working for liberation.
Suella Braverman appears to have exactly zero expertise in equalities law from looking at her CV. As a QC she should really understand the need to stay in her lane.
That said it's so astoundingly simple I'm amazed at how wrong she is on this. 1/4

No not really- simplifying *huuuugely* (like I can't emphasise how simplistic this is).
We got colonised by the Romans. The Romans brought the spices.
We *really* liked the spices.
1000+ years of the spice road/trading.
Colonising made getting the spices easier so we did.
Manchester YC have deleted this tweet admitting breaking the rules was happening throughout the party and not just at number 10.

Fatphobia is going to get me killed one of these days. 3rd time in 2 years I've gone to doctor with mild symptoms & been told it's because I'm fat. 3rd time in 2 years I've gone back months later with worse symptoms and been diagnosed with a significant health issue.
Somebody at HQ or in
@LibDemLords
needs to speak to Sarah about this unsavoury habit of trying to incite dogpiles of people she disagrees with because that is absolutely what is happening here and it's not the first time.
They emphatically are not.
While I don’t really like to get heavy re tweets, I do think
@DominicBuxton
that you need to be a bit careful about unfounded accusations you make in public
