If social security did work like that we’d have a ton of destitute old people who hadn’t made much money while in the workforce.
People think Social Security just pays you back what you personally put into it. That’s just not the case; if it were, the program wouldn’t be on the verge of insolvency. A lot of people are taking current payees for a ride. TL;DR It’s not really “your money”.

Everyone under 40 understands they won’t see a dime of the money that pay in Social Security taxes. People over 60 seemingly have no idea this is the case, because they don’t understand the system. They just benefit from it.
