As things continue to devolve, I am again re-pinning this thread I did 2 years ago when I realized I was the target of a right-wing information attack. This is relevant as Jack Posobiac and other online agitators continue to conspire with elected leaders to dismantle democracy.
I have recently realized I was the target of an information attack. As a “lifelong learner” I am still coming to understand what all that means. I have been following

I’m not sure if she will or won’t go to prison. What I do notice is there aren’t any major parties screaming about this as an issue that requires legislation to “protect kids”.

As a parent who has received one of these letters, I can tell you all they do is create fear. They go out automatically, even when I have called the school to explain family circumstances for excused absences. They cause harm to families that are already under duress.
A number of tweets and social media posts I made in 2016 have recently been highlighted. They have been taken out of context, both of that specific moment and the nuance of the conversation that took place.
@atwaheed
If you have contact with the family. Please tell them to file a Uniform Complaint against the district for discrimination. This is a violation of CA Ed Code. I’m speaking as a former school board member and longtime parent advocate.

said this new wave of Omicron 2.0 is 30% more contagious, with more reinfection potential. This does not bode well for a predicted April surge, considering a boosters ability to protect for infection is reduced by about half after 10 weeks from getting boosted.
.
@DrEricDing
says this is why we need “vaccines plus strategy” or we’ll keep playing whack-a-mole with new variants.
That means continuing with masking and enhanced HEPA air filtration in combination with vaccines.
Do you see the playbook? Using MAGA extremists to threaten parents. Andy Ngo tweets about Glendale and Christian nationalists threaten families in Temecula. Now the Proud Boys are planning to show up there.
When will media acknowledge this is a coordinated attack on FAMILIES?!?
This tactic of using extremists to target teachers, parents, & kids is not new. It is happening nationally. Here is a screenshot of a right wing Christian nationalist account using Andy’s tweet about Glendale to threaten Temecula families.
How is this PROTECTING children?!? 16/
Last evening the SF Board of Education directed staff to present a plan to give all our students A’s. No incompletes. Just A’s.
This decision was made in full support of

teachers and other education leaders.
I’m so grateful to be a part of this district.

Does anyone want to explain to me why we should all just accept the idea that a school is “better” if it excludes kids? Specifically if this kids turn out to be for the large part: low-income, English Language Learners, disabled, Black, Latinx?
It is not a coincidence that the people who banned The 1619 Project from schools (one of the very first books targeted by anti-CRT legislation) also promote “merit”.
The same SF folks championing “merit” also target Black self-determination via reparations and equity policies.
@rasmansa
They cannot even fathom that the most pervasive affirmative action in this country has been -- and I'd argue likely remains-- for white men and for in-network hiring. Or, that affirmative action has came about BECAUSE the merit of Black people was NOT considered.

@juliettekayyem
Excellent piece. The fact that he was radicalized on 4chan and other alt-right websites like infowars also needs to be addressed. This is his “community” and they are culpable as well.
Robin DiAngelo and other critical race scholars consistently cite the fact that intent does not mitigate impact. Because we are a product of our times and our socialization, we may do and say things that are horribly racist and not understand why.
Live tweet of meeting of SF school board where they voted 6-0 to paint over a mural painted during 1930’s by Communist depicting George Washington in his capacity as slave owner and Indian fighter. The mural was intended to portray the moral ambiguity of the founding.

Diane! Why, as treasurer of Friends of Lowell (and founder with Lee Cheng), were you sending their nonprofit mail from the IRS to Chris Marston, treasurer for Moms for Liberty?

My cousin Reggie Brown. He went into the hospital for heart surgery and never woke up. I spoke to him days before he went into surgery. Then we learned he had COVID. He never recovered.
I will always remember, he had so many plans.
Yesterday was out of control in LA, my “hometown”. The same folks radicalizing Christian Armenian immigrants in Glendale, CA invited Proud Boys and other Jan 6 insurrectionists to anti-LGBTQ protests at the GUSD. It got violent. 1/
Many folks have been discussing the pattern of organized outrage around CRT we are seeing at school board meetings across the country. (If you’ve been following along, it’s NOT organic.) 7/

If you supported the SF BoE recall, you are aligned with folks who are:
- working to dismantle our public education system,
- fighting to ban textbooks in schools,
- funding leaders who are banning books and championing “don’t say gay laws”,
- targeting anti-racist educators.

@cmclymer
Are you a parent? If so, make sure: all the teachers in your child’s school receive ongoing training on implicit bias; the reading lists are diverse; the school celebrates African American History in a big way; the school teaches kids academic language re: racism.
With delta variant cases rising, I’m hearing a lot of concern from educators and families alike who can’t bear the thought of another year of virtual teaching, and are at the same time concerned about the safety of our kids and communities.
This thread captures so much. 🧵
Love this so much. Not all disabilities are visible. And people with disabilities experience so much erasure because we are also members of other groups. Folks forget that disability isn’t a discrete category one belongs to. We are all members of other groups as well.
I don’t care if you’re kneeling or wearing a kente cloth or posting little black squares on you IG or painting a whole darn street with “Black Lives Matter”. Until I see a SUBSTANTIAL shift in power or resources, it’s still performative.
To clarify: The Lowell alumni group says they don’t officially condone Yap’s comments that Black people are criminals. But they are OK with their LEADERS openly saying Black children and families don’t care about learning as long as it’s IN THEIR INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY.
it appears that Lowell High School's official alumni group is forced to do damage control because of Diane Yap this week.
please recall that Yap was a hero of the BoE recall of Alison Collins (among others), lauded as a "whistleblower" by local media.
Studies show 40% of cases are asymptomatic. This means asking about symptoms or taking temperatures mean nothing — It's all about the testing. Without proper ventilation, PPE and space for physical distancing, schools cannot protect staff, students & their families from
#COVID19
Long before the official case count began to climb, the virus was freewheeling. Federal officials grappling with a shortage of test kits issued narrow testing criteria; that meant key local spreaders in the state were going unnoticed and untraced.
This is not organic. This is a pattern. SF and VA were beta tests for a larger campaign to create manufactured outrage and division within democratic strongholds. Now it’s happening across CA.
Lowell Alumni called for my resignation from the SF school board for making statements as an INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN 4 years before I took office.
Diane is making these statements AS AN EXECUTIVE of their organization.
This is what you call a double standard.

This all day! Our schools won’t be safe until we are properly resources to retrofit ventilation systems, hire more teachers to reduce class size, every school has a school nurse, we have proper PPE, ensure anyone and everyone can get tested, contact traced and treated...
Folks are taking about Diane Yap today because of a truly insensitive tweet she mad about homeless people.
For people wondering who she is, here is a thread.
This is by far my favorite Diane Yap quote because it illustrates exactly what I was talking about.
AntiBlackness is profitable. Yap is paid to weaponize
#StopAAPIHate
& demonize Black ppl for right-wing think tank, the Manhattan Institute. (Chris Rufo, is their senior fellow.)

Just a reminder that for all those demanding schools reopen this fall because “what about the achievement gap”?
Kids don’t learn when their teachers are dead.
No teacher should have to be so dedicated as to risk their life in order to teach.
I’ve been having conversations with SFUSD district leaders on reframing learning today. It’s not “Distance Learning” or “Homeschooling”. We could call it “Disaster Learning” but I’m looking for something more hopeful, and humane... I want a new name for this. Any ideas?
Let’s be honest. This whole “get back to normal” narrative is really just a cover for eugenics.
It’s a thinly veiled argument for “herd immunity” which doesn’t mind if some folks get “thinned” from the herd.
He said, air filtration and ventilation are preferred because they don’t require personal compliance like vaccines or masks.
(This is why we have health policies, people!)
@ToriLaC
@chancetherapper
Chiming in late, but this conversation resonates. Whites can’t fix a problem they can’t “see”. Many don’t see it bc of media and segregation
I’ve been talking about ventilation lately, but this Swiss cheese model reminds me of other actions we can take. Students need access to weekly, predictable testing that isn’t reliant on their family’s ability to drive or access the Internet.
The solutions have been with us for a very long time:
-
#MaskUp
- Improve air movement ("ventilation"; take it outside!)
- Get vaccinated (stops hospitalizations, and stops the spread)
- Support our healthcare staff, including the nurses and techs.
Anyway, listening in made me very clear that our family will continue masking.
@DrEricDing
has been right since fall 2020 when I started following, so I won’t be taking any chances.
Twitter! Show me some love! Folks keep telling me the way to teach kids “our country’s history” is by showing them images of enslaved Africans. Seriously? Tell me one kid that DOESN’T already know that.
Our history is more than slavery! Show me images we SHOULD be teaching.
This is what White Saviorism looks like in education. Contrary to many racist narratives that permeate educ. spaces... Black parents LOVE their children. In fact, many said their kids were happier learning at home b/c they didn’t have to endure anti-Black learning environments.
Tandler operates like many of the “parents” and “concerned neighbors” activists who led the recall of Chesa and BOE, promoting centuries old narratives justifying white racial aggression based on fear of low-income immigrants.
Stoking racial fear for electoral power isn’t new.
Just white woman Michelle Tandler claiming that her fear justifies lynching, reproducing exactly—almost word-for-word—the famed “lynch a thousand times a week” speech of suffragist Rebecca Latimer Felton.

This is a professional way of saying “uppity”.
I’m seeing a whole lot of classwork being emailed to my kids. While I DEEPLY appreciate their teachers’ efforts, I keep wondering how this is at all equitable. As a district, do we know which kids do and don’t have computer access, Wi-Fi and desktop/laptop computers?
The problem w/ “both sides” journalism is media rarely fact check disinfo. Our country has learned nothing from Trump. I continue to see media reprinting GOP/recall talking points that the SFBOE was focused on renaming over reopening. Whether or not you agree it’s simply untrue.
He suggested that
#COVID19
is a silent illness, and thus it’s harder to see it’s impacts, esp. when the CDC moved to tracking COVID via hospitalizations.
Here the driving analogies also stood out. We don’t set seatbelt or drunk driving policies on hospitalizations, right?
Here again, the public health policy driving analogies makes language about “mask choice” sound silly.
I’m glad motorists aren’t given a “choice” of how high their blood alcohol is when driving. I’m glad seatbelts and motorcycle helmets protect folks from their “choices” too.

Garry Tan didn’t just say he wanted elected officials dead. He wished death on all the folks they represent:
- Black families in the Bayview and Mission
- Advocates for low-income, immigrants and unhoused people
- Chinese Americans progressives
- a majority of SF voters…
It is amazing how powerful the need is to restrict Black, immigrant, and Native American self-determination when it results in changes for folks who benefit from the status quo. This backlash is happening because we effectively centered unheard voices and redistributed power.
it just amazes me that we had worldwide protests and seemingly deep conversations about racial equity and doing something about it, and then a year later we had a BOE recall because leaders were prioritizing that.
...No matter what, we will continue to fight for the children and families most in need, for our vision of a multiracial democracy, and for our public education system—we’re still here and we are not giving up.
Finally I want to note the language people are using around masking is really problematic. I’ve received several emails from families using “mask choice” language.”
Masking myself is a great way to decrease my risk of getting infected, but it’s also a way I protect others.
Want to know why VP Pence is talking about the SF school board recall?
This is the Trump lawyer that is working with Save Lowell folks to resegregate admissions and dismantle a district Equity Audit.

How is this PROTECTING children?!? 16/
I keep seeing people post they are willing to go back to a hybrid model if safety measures are in place. But we all know none of these will be in place come the first day of school. So the real question is, are you willing to go to school while districts work this stuff out?
Chris Rufo is taking aim against SFUSD’s trans and non-binary students. It’s not a coincidence he pals with one of the biggest school board recall proponents. This is a well funded strategy to use trans kids as a boogyman to take political power and dismantle public education.
SF BoE recallers working to dismantle education:
Chris Rufo came up with the anti-CRT boogeyman for a reason. To create distrust for public education.
Garry Tan supports Chris Rufo ideology re: education policy.
