Complaining that the proposed CA "billionaire tax" would hit unrealized gains is a distraction from the real issues: - it's a big & gimmicky tax on a v. few people - if it passes, it sends a v. bad signal about how CA will try to deal with fiscal problems in the future 1/2

This CA “billionaire” tax is an unrealized gains tax. A unicorn startup founder becomes a paper billionaire around $5B val. At YC we avg 2 to 4 per year (!) This will kill startups and innovation in California since a founder is illiquid while instantly on the hook for $100M

@johnharrison There are so many other levers that could be pulled. They could cancel the stupid train nobody supports. CA could kill a grab bag of terrible government programs. Heck, they could sell some of the 15 million acres/thousands of empty buildings owned by the state. Doing none

I think in a moment when GitHub’s reputation amongst developers is at an all time low, making the policy change to charge for self hosted runners in any scenario instead of making other technical changes to make GH runners more attractive will go down as a very bad move.

Awful self-inflicted wound for the nation. Today our federal govt gleefully condemned thousands of kids each year to chronic hepatitis and liver cancer, by denying them a vaccine invented in America, using microbial fermentation, our least expensive and safest technology

The fact that we have political systems that do byzantine things like this instead of just charging a basic tax per litre of fuel to account for environmental costs (or even mileage * weight^4 for wear and tear) in a consistent way continues to frustrate me. When accounting for

Ever wonder why sedans disappeared and every car is huge now? "Thanks, Obama!" His administration changed fuel economy standards in a way that had the perverse impact of making cars even bigger. Here are all the vehicles for sale by the 3 largest US automakers. 62 vehicles,

It really is striking seeing the difference between a politician who is trying to pragmatically run his city well vs others who are thirsting for a crisis to give them some national air time.

Errant thoughts on a Tuesday morning: 1) The Cook attempted firing will be litigated quickly but not as quickly as folks seem to think. This process will take about few weeks even to wind its way to the Supreme Court on whether the firing will be stayed pending litigation.

This is something Republicans are generally just better at and it really helps them. George W. Bush hasn’t even attended a RNC since his renomination in 2004! Meanwhile Dems were giving the Clintons primetime speaking slots in 2024.

One of Donald Trump’s strongest features as a candidate was how unabashedly he thrashed failed members of his own party and administrations past (especially George W Bush). Democrats in 2026 & 2028 will need to do the same. There are no sacred cows that can’t be slaughtered

Something is fucking wrong with you if you get angry at poor people given free access to museums and aquariums. It’s a $50-65 ticket also free to schools, community groups, etc. Idiots in comments have no clue where Monterey even is, as if poor from CA converging upon aquarium.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium in California costs $295 for a family membership or $125 for a single adult If you have an EBT Food Card entry is free, and up to 4 people can get in for free every time you go There is a strong incentive for these people to never get off Food Stamps

Vance is so good: "The American Space Program, the first program to put a human being on the moon, was built by American citizens. This idea that American citizens don't have the talent to do great things, that you have to import a foreign class of servants, I just reject that."

California public schools removing honors classes from public schools for "equity" is a self-inflicted Cultural Revolution. It will also make those with means defect to private schools, worsening disparities.

There are several problems with this, but the big one is: How do we know who is a citizen and who is a trespasser unless we have some kind of process? What if my house is being robbed, the police arrive, and the robber points at me and shouts "He's the robber, shoot him!" I sure

The right of “due process” is to protect citizens from their government, not to protect foreign trespassers from removal. Due process guarantees the rights of a criminal defendant facing prosecution, not an illegal alien facing deportation.
