"Becoming a refugee is never a choice. But how we respond is. So let us choose ๐๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐. Let us choose ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ. Let us choose ๐ต๐๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐๐. On this #WorldRefugeeDay, solidarity must go beyond words." - @antonioguterres

@carla_denyer @Guli_FD @AlfDubs @SalBrinton @ZoeFranklinLD Thank you also to lawyers from @DuncanLewis and @ILPAimmigration for guiding us through the legal complexities of this policy change and why citizenship is such an important right for anyone granted refugee status, regardless of how you came to the UK.

Full house for yesterday's APPG meeting on the refugee citizenship ban. We heard powerful testimonies from Beshta and Farzad on the impact of this ban on people who want to integrate into British society and the effect on their mental health. 1/2

But it must be coupled by a plan to reduce small boat crossings by introducing safe routes. A secure home is vital, but the Government must fix structural issues affecting people seeking asylum, including lifting the ban on the right to work and improving decision-making. 2/2

It is welcome the Chancellor confirms hotel use for people seeking asylum will end by next election. The Government cite ยฃ1 billion in savings each year, but it will also have a huge impact on refugee mental health and integration. 1/2

@ChrisMurrayMP @CommonsHomeAffs @YvetteCooperMP @safepassageint @refugeecouncil It is pleasing that the Home Secretary confirms the Government are looking at this, though it has not yet been a focus of agreements with EU countries. Read more in @refugeecouncil reports here: https://t.co/wVogU0pU4E

@ChrisMurrayMP @CommonsHomeAffs @YvetteCooperMP The Dublin Arrangement allowed the UK to take in unaccompanied refugee children with family here, but this is not possible anymore. @safepassageint and @refugeecouncil found that 95% of family reunion cases they supported via Dublin no longer qualify under existing rules 2/3

@JakeBenRichards @CommonsHomeAffs @refugeecouncil @HelenBamber @humansforrights @EnverSol You can read the full report here, and the APPG will be pressing the Government to act on the recommendations and ensure steps are taken sooner to prevent children being put in adult settings in the first place. 3/3 https://t.co/HNLBOBMWCO

@JakeBenRichards @CommonsHomeAffs @refugeecouncil @HelenBamber @humansforrights The Refugee and Migrant Children's Consortium say over 600 local authorities had vulnerable refugee children referred to them in 2024. Many of these children were put in adult asylum hotels or detention, which @EnverSol of @refugeecouncil described as a safeguarding scandal. 2/3

Thank you to @JakeBenRichards who sits on the @CommonsHomeAffs for raising the vital issue of refugee children wrongly being placed in adult asylum hotels. Many of the children @refugeecouncil, @HelenBamber and @humansforrights work with are wrongly classed as adults. 1/3
