We stand up for the rights of refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK. We also support and empower people to live safe, dignified and fulfilling lives.
🧵 Today we publish a report showing that the majority of those men, women and children who cross the Channel on small boats would be granted asylum in the UK because they are fleeing war and persecution. Here’s how the Home Office tried to rubbish our report last night….
Right now a cruel bill that seeks to turn people fleeing for their lives from war & persecution into criminals is progressing through Parliament.

We are really concerned by yesterday's Newsnight story about Afghan female football players in the UK. The accusations have been directly rejected by the footballers themselves, and the fact that many girls were named without their consent has put them at potential risk. (1/5)
We applaud
@Mo_Farah
for his bravery in telling his heartbreaking story - he underlines the human reality at the heart of so many stories like his - and the desperate need for safe and humane routes for people seeking asylum.
Our response to the Home Secretary's speech this afternoon:
“The proposals in this speech are deeply worrying and out of step with the majority of the public who support giving refugees protection.

Happy Birthday to all refugees who don't know or can't prove when their real birthday is and have been assigned today instead. All the best for the coming year.
Anyone has the right to apply for asylum in any country that has signed the 1951 Refugee Convention and to remain until their claim has been assessed. The Convention recognises people may use irregular means to escape to another country.
We urge media outlets to consider the potential impact of their reporting on the women and girls involved, especially in times of heightened tensions. (5/5)
They were rightly welcomed by the UK public & are trying to rebuild their lives in our communities.
Of course, there are many women still at risk in Afghanistan, and yet fewer than 100 Afghans were resettled over the course of 2022. (3/5)
Instead of dividing communities through harmful narratives, we need to focus on supporting Afghans and standing in solidarity with them, whether they're in Afghanistan or here in the UK. (4/5)
These are young women who were at grave risk of violence from the Taliban for the crime of having played football, and had to flee, leaving everything they know behind to find safety elsewhere. (2/5)
Robert Jenrick on

We applaud
@GaryLineker
and colleagues for using their public profile and the global platform of sport to speak up on behalf of the unheard men, women and children in the asylum debate. Join the campaign for a fair and humane asylum system.
To describe the serious and complex situation created by the asylum crisis as an “invasion” is appalling, wrong and dangerous. These are men, women and children fleeing war, persecution and conflict.
The terrible Illegal Migration Bill has passed all its stages in Parliament and will now become law. It’s a dark day for the UK’s reputation as a protector of human rights and a grave moment for those seeking safety in an uncertain world. But the fight for a fair and humane…
So there you have it. The Home Office doesn’t argue with that bit of the report. That its proposed legislation will detain and deport refugees including eight thousand children, fleeing torture, persecution and war, at huge cost. That bit of the report they were ok with…
Happy Birthday to all refugees who don’t know or can’t prove when their real birthday is and have been assigned today instead. All the best for the coming year.
We said that most of the people on the boats are people with very strong claims to refugee status, people in need of safety and security. The Home Office didn’t dispute that…..
Peter Kyle, MP for Hove, reflected in Parliament yesterday that "If one child related to one of us in this room went missing, the world would stop, but in the community that I represent...currently 76 are missing—and nothing is happening."
Great to see
@GaryLineker
back on BBC! We're grateful to those who stood with him and refugees in need. But for those seeking asylum, the struggle continues. Let's raise our voices and demand a fair and humane asylum system. Will you join us?
We said that the Government’s plan to detain and deport these refugees was inhumane, unworkable and would cost millions of pounds. The Home Office didn’t dispute that either….
We are devastated to hear news of the incident in the Channel today, and heartbroken at the reports of fatalities. Our thoughts are with all those affected and we pay tribute to the rescue teams working on such a dreadful incident.
They also told journalists we were being unfair to compare family reunion figures for 2019 with 2022. We had to point out that their minister Robert Jenrick had done exactly that *in a written answer in Parliament* a few days ago….
They accepted that they’d been unfair to try to rubbish us over that.
But they also tried to get us to compare different figures over the number of people resettled from Afghanistan. They didn’t like it that the number since 2021 on one scheme is……four.
The Prime Minister has said today that our asylum system is “overwhelmed by people from safe countries”. That’s simply untrue. Most people are refugees from the most dangerous places on earth.
Our dream is an approach to refugees which is fair and compassionate, which recognises the pain and suffering of those who make dangerous journeys to flee war, persecution and violence. Suspect we are in the majority on that.
Suella Braverman says it would be “my dream” to see a flight deporting migrants to Rwanda by Christmas.
But she warns it will take much longer because of the lengthy process of legal challenges.
#ChoppersPolitics
The Rwanda scheme has just been ruled unlawful by the UK Supreme court!
This is a victory for the rights of men, women and children who simply want to be safe. The plan goes against who we are as a country that stands up for those less fortunate than us and for the values of…

“We are very disappointed in the outcome of this case. If the Government moves ahead with these harmful plans, it would damage the UK’s reputation as a country that values human rights,
All people fleeing persecution – including for their sexuality or beliefs – should have the right to safety. Standing up for our shared humanity is just as important today as it ever was. These international frameworks exist to protect everyone.
They claimed we’d got our sums wrong and that we were using figures in the wrong way. They contacted journalists to say so.
They claimed our estimate of the number of children on boats last year - almost 20pc of all those on the vessels - was wrong….

We have today published a new report showing that most of those crossing the Channel would be given asylum - and why Government plans to detain and deport refugees are inhumane, unworkable and unfair.
And they accused us of saying things that….we hadn’t actually said.
We understand they did issue a correction and clarification to some media outlets.
But they didn’t mention the two things in our report they didn’t challenge…..
BREAKING NEWS!!!!
The Home Office have confirmed that ALL evictions and terminations of asylum support have been paused for 3 months. Find out more and read the letter from Home Office Minister Chris Philp confirming this on our website at:
🧵 The asylum system in the UK is in chaos - and the impact on the people stuck within it because of Government failure is increasingly worrying. This week has show the true scale of the crisis. 1/
The asylum system is indeed broken and leaves vulnerable people to languish for months. The Home Sec. is wrong, however, to say that people arriving in small boats are doing so illegally. They have a clear right to do so under the Refugee Convention.
The asylum system is a mess. Thousands of lives in limbo, at huge cost.
We could have a fair and orderly approach delivered with compassion and competence.
What we saw on Merseyside last night is the result of unworkable schemes and a hostile environment
We are better than this.
🧵 Ministers must immediately convene a task force to address the humanitarian crisis in the asylum system in the UK. Here are the six things we think they should do as soon as possible…
"It’s a shame the Home Secretary seems to need reminding that seeking asylum is a right & the UK has an obligation to assess claims fairly & grant protection to those who need it." Our response to Sajid Javid's comments about people crossing the channel:
Happy Birthday to all refugees who don't know or can't prove when their real birthday is and have been assigned today instead. We hope 2021 is a great year for you! 🎉
A year ago today 32 people lost their lives trying to reach UK shores. Behind the headlines are mothers, fathers, sons & daughters. People like you. Today we remember them.
Lessons must be learnt. We need safe routes for those in dire need of protection.

We are deeply concerned by this news. We have a responsibility to give people seeking asylum safe and secure accommodation while they are in the UK asylum system.
There is no evidence from published Home Office data or analysis to support the home secretary's claims. In fact, official data shows that nearly three quarters of decisions relating to those who claim protection based on their sexuality or gender are granted asylum in the UK.

Some great news out today: the High Court has unequivocally said that all separated children are entitled to the full rights and protections accorded by the Children Act, regardless of their immigration status.
Today, the House of Lords has taken a strong stand for humanity and compassion, voting to treat refugees equally regardless of how they get here and to make a commitment to the resettlement of refugees.
The Nationality and Borders Bill will now return to the House of Commons.
As the government announces its deal with France on channel crossings, new figures we are releasing today underline the scale of the crisis in the asylum system. They show that a staggering 122,000 people are living in limbo waiting for a decision on their asylum claim.
Protestors in Kirkby have surrounded a hotel housing asylum seekers.
A police van has been set on fire and authorities say missiles were fired from the crowd.
Merseyside police have confirmed this is an ongoing incident.

We will wait to see the detail of the Home Secretary’s speech but if correct these proposals are deeply alarming and will not be supported by the vast majority of people. It is wrong to criminalise those seeking protection.

Deeply concerning language being used by the Home Secretary today, with her reference to ‘vexatious’ asylum claims. The right to seek asylum is enshrined in law and as such, each case needs to be fully considered on its merits.

Most refugees don’t come to the UK. Those who do usually come to be reunited with family or have community links. They also think that the UK is a country which will support them and provide safety from unimaginable situations: the best of British values. We don’t hate the UK.
Next time you read some nonsense about Channel boat crossings, take a look at these pictures. They could be a standard primary school wall - in fact they are from our service for unaccompanied children arriving in Dover. 3500 kids, some as young as 8, made that journey in 2022.
