The refugee policies proposed by @ukhomeoffice will harm social cohesion. Although it’s clear that recent immigration policy has been unsuccessful and new measures are necessary, the proposed approach misses the point in important ways. We need an integration-first approach!⬇️

The report could however have better recognised the key role that faith communities already play in building cohesion. Theos research has repeatedly shown that churches excel at fostering cohesion. We urge the Independent Commission on Community and Cohesion to recognise this 🔚

This is esp true for integration. The report notes more commitment to public engagement across the the UK could make our immigration & asylum systems work better. I would go further and say that only radically devolved systems that place communities in the driving seat can work.

We agree: social cohesion is fragile, and building it must be a relational, local, and long-term process. The idea that an ‘everybody, everywhere’ response is needed also rings true: entire communities must be involved - it cannot be done TO them, only WITH them.

I was very excited to read @britishfuture and @BelongNetwork's new report on community cohesion today. It is a serious and timely report. There is much I could say, but I would like to focus on where it overlaps with my @Theosthinktank research on refugee integration 🧵

RE matters profoundly — not just as an academic subject, but as a space where young people can explore what makes us human, what makes us tick, and what we value most. Let's make sure we continue providing high–quality RE for the next generation!

Today also reinforced my belief in the importance of RE in nurturing thoughtful and reflective citizens. Having grown up in France, where RE is taboo in schools, I was reminded of how many important and thoughtful conversations students in secular countries are missing out on.
