We cannot stress enough how harmful asylum hotels are — contrary to the perception that they are 'luxurious'. They must be closed urgently but not be replaced with crumbling, overcrowded & isolated large sites.  Thanks @BenChu_ for dispelling the myths around asylum hotels 👇

Many survivors stay silent due to trauma, stigma & fear of retaliation. We must build trust, create safe reporting channels & remove barriers so they can seek help without fear. On World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we call for systems that protect & support survivors.

(1) This #WorldDayAgainstHumanTrafficking, we’re calling for urgent change: better protection for survivors, and real consequences for traffickers. Support must be survivor-centred, and justice must reach those who profit from exploitation. #MakeThemPay #EndTheExploitaition

Today's report from the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration found that a decade of concerns around the Home Office’s “’perfunctory’ visual assessments” of age remain unaddressed. This needs to change urgently. Our full statement: https://t.co/CLp1IuYSdE 4/4

Every year hundreds of children are incorrectly determined by border officials to be adults based on a cursory visual assessment – over 600 in 2024 alone. Many are forced to share rooms with adults and end up in adult prisons after being prosecuted for illegal arrival. 3/4

Existing evidence has found that AI and facial recognition technologies to assess age can be even less accurate & more biased than human decisions. It is vital that the Home Office stops looking for ‘quick fixes’ and prioritise the safety of children. 2/4

🚨 We welcome the government's decision to scrap 'scientific methods' of assessing age of children seeking asylum. But we remain concerned about the Home Office’s use of visual assessments & plans to use AI. 🧵👇

Survivors denied immigration status can be left in poverty and without support. For those few granted leave, nearly half were given less than 12 months — offering no stability or real chance to rebuild their lives. Children are left at even greater risk. 2/3

It's two years today since the opening of Wethersfield: the prison-like camp where hundreds of people seeking sanctuary are shut away. Here, we look back at two years of suffering & scandal to show why Wethersfield MUST close. [CN: thread contains suicide & torture mentions]

Today MPs vote on the welfare bill. Many survivors we support need disability benefits due to the severe impact of torture & trafficking on their mental & physical health. The bill (even with concessions) will push many further into poverty, homelessness & exploitation.

Decision making about children seeking asylum should be taken away from the Home Office and given to child protection experts. Young people coming to the UK alone have experienced profound trauma — they must be treated with dignity & humanity, not disbelief & hostility. 2/2

🚨 We found that in the first half of 2024 over HALF of young people seeking asylum were initially assessed as adults by the Home Office but found to be children after being referred to local authorities – at least 262 children. This cannot continue. 1/2 https://t.co/HwdOG7goCN

Over the past 2 years, we've warned repeatedly that moving men seeking asylum in the UK to Wethersfield causes them profound & long-lasting harm. Instead of closing the site urgently, the govt plans to extend its use — it's disgraceful. https://t.co/u1i3VbXqfb
