@JosiahHawthorne
No, not legal at all. They must honor the advertised price.
And it also doesn't match the definition of "down payment." Makes no sense.
They can add taxes, and use high-pressure tactics to add a warranty and other stuff. But except for the taxes, you can refuse.
@masonmennenga
Thanks, I found out.
"Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 7)
@RealSaavedra
Where I come from, the reason why people build houses and apartments, is to make a profit.
So if this philosophy becomes law, why would any sane person ever build another housing unit again?
@masonmennenga
You dont suppose those two things can be true at the same time? (I've never known anyone who had only one sin.)
When the men outside demand entry, Lot offered his virgin daughters instead. Why would he do such a thing, if their only sins were arrogance and gluttony?
@Knomdivad
@cheascake
Yup. Circulating air, is the very definition of a convection oven. That's the "convection" part.
The same thing happens on a larger scale, in the atmosphere of the earth.
@louise122884
You made a general comment about MEN?
Yes, I can see how some guys will take offense.
Or would you be OK with it, if I made a similar dismissive comment about WOMEN?
@emilykmay
There was a time when my son would never eat vegetables.
Except the green beans at Hometown Buffet.
So I asked the mgr for the recipe.
Turns out they were canned beans from Sysco. (Which only sells to restaurants.
So yes, there should be a law. Let me buy a can of Sysco beans.
@ZaackHunt
I have zero opinion on this, and I refuse to form one.
Many first-c. Jews studied the Messianic prophecies furiously. And then he showed up, and thery missed it.
Lord when you come, may I not be found with my nose in a book.
@TPruitt67
I figure, everyone who has ever invited me to their wedding, was and is a sinner.
By this standard, it sounds like I should never attend a wedding. And no Christian should have attended mine.
@Andy35o
When my mother in-law died, Dad was helpless.
He didn't know how to fry an egg, or mop a floor, or wash a sock, or shop for food or iron a shirt.
I learned all of those things, before I was 10.
@KathleenLJoiner
I worked as a supermarket cashier for years. I witnessed welfare fraud firsthand, almost every day. The same people, every month. No, it's not a myth. People still find ways around the new rules.
@realgirl_fieri
My philosophy has always been, if I don't like my job, I should fine a new one. I have lived by this philosophy for over 40 years now.
That said, I will ALWAYS do my best work. Not for their sake, but for my own integrity. 40+ years.

When I was a kid, "tolerance" meant "I will put up with you."
Somehow today, it means that we grant special privileges to certain people.

This could be my cousins in Texas. Or my wife's cousins in Virginia. Or my neighbor's family in Wyoming, where lots of people take their guns to school and church. Perfectly normal, in many places in USA.
Writers, PLEASE don't tell me your book has 50,000 words, if you also have 12,000 words of footnotes. These take up space on the page and require editing. ABSOLUTELY, you must include the footnotes. EVERYTHING matters.

Today I'm catching up on a couple of weeks' worth of queries. Many of them make it very easy to reject.
Huge and tiny word counts.
They don't know their genre or audience
Won't follow instructions.
Greatest tragedy here is, they might be good books. But I can't tell.
Today I'm looking over a week's worth of queries. Most don't know their genre, or the right word count for their genre, and/or can't write a synopsis.
These might be good books. But the world may never know.

My faith has nothing to do with republicans, or dems, or any other political entity. Other peoples' words or behavior, are not the basis for what I believe.
I get a lot of of writers asking why I don't shut down my submissions inbox occasionally, as other agents do.
It's simple: I have an acute case of FOMO. And it's not a lot of work, to scroll through my subs to find the ones that interest me.

Many of the poor people I've known, were born into a world of vast opportunity.
But then they made lots of bad decisions over time: Drugs, drinking, promiscuity, and neglecting education. Their traumas were self-inflicted.
@masonmennenga
@ConceptualJames
Sure.
It says that YOU should welcome immigrants. Which you can do at any time.
But to subcontract that virtue to the govt? I don't think that counts.
Writers! Don't ever underestimate the power of a good platform. It's your brand. When I worked in supermarkets, Oreos always outsold the store brands. Even though they cost more. (Yes I'm looking at you, too, novelists.)

@McClureShawn
Excellent.
You believe in things you can't see.
Where I come from, this is the very definition of faith.
That said, as a Christian, I feel no burden to prove anything to anyone. I present my case, and either you accept it or you don't.

I worked for a supermarket, back in the 1980s. Got promoted into the meat dept, as a "meat clerk." This kept the butchers cutting meat, while I did the busy work.
Many of the butchers resented my presence, because they knew that I was "stealing" weekly hours from them. 1/2
@bonhoefferchild
I have attended at least a dozen weddings in the past couple of years. Every one of these women were long moved out of their parents' home. They had jobs and cars and made their own choices. I can't see how their parents had any power to extract a dowry from the new husbands.
Almost every day, I see a comment on social media about JK Rowling: She was rejected by 12 publishers before her first deal with Bloomsbury. This isn't persistence or patience; where I come from, we call it "just getting started."
@William_E_Wolfe
Years ago, the BLM website had a line that read "We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family."
They have since deleted it.
But make no mistake: One of the greatest predictors of crime and illiteracy, is the absence of two married parents in the home.
@EPICIND1E
@In2theHeartwyld
Ummm...let's get something straight here.
Writers work for the readers. Not the other way around.
The readers are the ones who get to decided whether your book succeeds or fails. Their opinions are the most important of anyone.
@BrynDonovan
Years ago, I had a friend who pitched a Movie of the Week to CBS.
Just a few months later, a nearly-identical movie showed up on TV.
It was Dr. Quinn.
Two writers who never met, wrote the same story.
@candiceteets
I have never imagined that there's a special virtue in the mere act of sitting in a pew for an hour a week.
So if you do attend church (a good thing), but then rush for the door after the closing song, I think you will be better off to stay home and dispense with the pretense.
@YtBabyFactory
@igarglewithfire
Well, a black neighborhood isn't necessarily violent.
And I'm in no position to "let her" do or not do anything.
But we have a conversation, and she makes a decision.
It happened again last week: I found another publisher that only seeks submissions from women.
And white women need not apply.
All in the name of fairness and social justice.
Your racism is showing. All (ostensibly) in the name of fighting racism. Sad.
Me: How would you persuade an unbeliever to seek out your evangelistic Christian book?
Writer: They can buy it at Amazon or BN. Or they can find it on my website.
Seriously?
So much talk these days, about "book banning." Truth is, today more than ever, anyone can find any book they want with a few keystrokes.
That said, if by "banning" you mean that you don't expose third graders to books about sex, I'm all for it.
I'm seeing dozens of posts from writers, pitching their books to gain attention from agents.
NONE give nearly enough info to get me interested.
If you expect me to go out of my way to pry that info out of you, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Well, I know my GPA, and that probably puts me in the top 25% or so.
But people actually make a list? I can't see how that means anything at all. Esp 25 years after graduation, with your work and life experience. (44 years, for me.)
@zoesees

But I knew the bigger problem: The union raised the wages and benefits so high, that the company sought out ways to hire fewer of them.
Today, if you want a special cut of meat, good luck. Even the journeymen today have only a minimal level of training. Everyone loses.
@SamanthaKolber
@ambernoelle
That would depend on how soon you began the payments, and whether you made the required payments on time. Just like any other loan.
Even an interest rate of 1% will double the balance eventually.
There has been a lot of discussion recently, about literary agents who won't tell the reason why they rejected your book. What most writers don't know, is that it's not as simple as you think.

Strange things happening in pub-world these days.
Am I supposed to ask authors about their ethnicity?
Their sexual identity?
Their religious or political beliefs?
Hard to see how those things will (or ever could) make their writing any better. Or platform. Or business savvy.
@MeganDavidhizar
For clarity:
You believe that Agent B will be impressed because you had an offer from Agent A?
Unlikely. We all make out own choices, for our own reasons.
@Joemarauthor
From my experience,

is a very inefficient means to find new talent. It often gives false hope to writers who think they've found a secret back door. Sure, I might get lucky here and there; but I get far better material in my daily inbox. Or even better, at conferences.

I can attest with 100% accuracy, that I have never caused an abortion.
In 7th grade health class, our teacher described in explicit detail, the process to perform an abortion. I was immediately repulsed, and had to run outside to barf. I remained physically ill for a whole day.
@SheiiaTheRito

I don't understand this response.
My friends and I don't always share the same life goals.
But we're always happy to see the others succeed.
@dandarling
The other mistake that many Christians make, is that they project their own responsibilities on to others.
That is, if they can bully someone else into virtuous behavior, then they count it as a virtue for themselves.
@erichoke
Funny typo notwithstanding, it's not true that you give up your rights to your book. Essentially it's a lease, and only the rights you agree upon.
It's a tradeoff you make, in exchange for the publisher's free labor and venture capital.

Me, I was baptized by a Catholic priest. Not by my parents. My cousin and aunt stood as my godparents, to exercise their faith on my behalf. That's the Catholic custom.
