How do we avoid this? By knowing what beliefs are essential to the faith, and what beliefs are essential to our traditions (but not the whole faith), and what beliefs are not essential at all, keeping them carefully delineated. PSA is a non-essential.

I remember my fear when I examined Scriptures and saw them pointing a certain way, because that way was out-of-bounds in my tradition. It would have been too easy to mentally bury my conclusions to keep my community. (Sometimes I did.). It doesn't always have to be like that.

One last PSA thought:. If your "tribe" declares a non-essential belief is essential or else you're "out of the fold," it shuts down your ability to consider alternatives. I have far less ire for those who hold PSA, and more for those who say "Rejecting PSA is heresy.".
