sad day for the tenants of 888 Dupont, given orders to vacate to make way for luxury condos. Lots of artists called that space home, condos vs the arts takes another round.
This is heartbreaking news about a landmark store that was so supportive to so many people. Just processing and reminiscing. We're going to have more thoughts on this soon, but RIP Soundscapes and best of luck to Greg and everyone there.
As fences go up around Ontario Place, we feel the need to be clear on our opposition to the development.
With an event in the works in Dec alongside
@ONPlace4All
, we can no longer accept in good faith any support from Diamond Schmitt, as long as they are involved in the project.
ANNOUNCEMENT!! We are teaming up with
@ONPlace4All
on Dec 3rd to bring you an all day telethon in opposition to the proposed spa development at Ontario Place. Mark your calendars!
More details coming next week!
I promised the people of Ontario that we would put an end to the party with your money. Today, we launched a Commission of Inquiry and line-by-line audit of provincial spending to ensure the people are presented with a full, honest, and accurate picture of Ontario’s finances.
NEW: The Ford government has tabled legislation that would give itself significant new powers to fast-track the redevelopment of Ontario Place and exclude it from environmental laws, including the power to issue MZOs on the site.

This is a video of people supporting their neighbours that are living in encampments in Bellwoods. People are appropriately distanced and taking care to take all necessary precautions.
It's important for journalists to understand the story before posting about it.
Waited approx 30 minutes for an Ossington bus at Dupont. Absolutely slammed. Made it to the station and it’s so jammed with people there are 3 buses full of people waiting. 12 years of Conservative rule in Toronto.
@ttcriders
For anyone complaining about how expensive Toronto is, I present this outstanding $3 pep slice from Juniors on Dundas.
Look out for a selection of West End treats under $5 treats coming in our April Issue.
WEP and

Drop in and send the Ford government a message:
NO PRIVATE SPA ON PUBLIC LAND, NO CUTTING DOWN TREES, NO 95 YEAR LEASE, AND NO $600M PARKING GARAGE!
Saddened to hear the news of the legendary Dallas Good (Sadies) passing. There is not enough space nor enough words to describe the life of one of the greats. RIP to a true luminary.
Hey West Enders, excited to introduce myself to you as the new Twitter manager for the West End Phoenix! My name is
@nikostratis
, I'm a writer living in the beautiful west end of Toronto and I'll be the new person behind it all on here. Excited to share stories with you!
After reporting zero gun related fatalities last year, Regent Park residents are looking to highlight the success of investments into social services.
@CityErica
reports.
So many highlights for us in 2023 but perhaps the biggest is having a place to call home at WEP Central. Having a physical space in the neighbourhood has helped us foster community beyond what we do with the newspaper.
See you today at 2pm for the Rally for the Trees on West Island! We’re meeting at Moose Hollow on West Island. Here’s a full map of OP including washroom locations:

We are not doing any April Fools today as there is already enough misinformation coming from the people we're supposed to be able to trust every other day of the year.
Protesters at Confederation park, right across from City Hall and beside the NAC and Rideaul Canal, appear to be building some type of wooden structure. They've also collected a stockpile of propane tanks and diesel fuel.
@CTVNews
If you are coming by our Save Ontario Place Telethon tomorrow, you can look also look forward to hot dogs from

Another blow to local news reporting, our hearts go out to those who have lost their jobs today. How can community thrive if shareholder profits are the only concern?
It’s WEP head honcho
@hockeyesque
birthday today!! Drop a happy birthday below!
Pictured here holding the very first issue of the West End Phoenix, which is also about to celebrate its 5th (!) birthday! Stay tuned for more on that….
There's just something about a stack of newspapers sitting on a pallet waiting to be delivered. Thank you all for helping keep the dream of independent print journalism alive.
The Prime Minister of Canada came to the Gladstone Hotel to visit the staff and writers and photographers-- a few of them anyway-- of West End Phoenix and to recognize and celebrate the importance of independent journalism.
Beautiful sights (and not great quality photos!) at Ontario Place this morning | Scarlet tanager, magnolia warbler, blackburnian warbler, and an indigo bunting 🌲

We are able to publish our newspaper because Toronto is an awesome city with awesome people who will support this wild idea of ours and in times like these we're reminded how lucky we are to live here in spite of occasions of darkness. Love to all affected by today's events.

: Toronto has a great concert scene. So why was being a live music fan so awful this year?
Securing concert tickets has become a competitive sport — one that requires cash, connections and — often — total desperation.
Thrilled to say that we were interviewed for the one and only
@NewYorker
(yes, THAT New Yorker) ! A local paper with worldwide appeal, West End Phoenix does it all!
thanks to Ben McGrath for the write up, read all about it in the Nov 8th issue when it drops next week!
I don't know who produced this parody Metrolinx ads, but they're incredible and really not all that far removed from the actual ad campaign those dinguses produced.

Seeing as restaurants are closing their doors again, be nice to show some solidly and order from your local favourites if you’re able. Let’s help support each other through yet another lockdown.
These condos are a blight on the street because the commercial space sits derelict and tinted-windowed sucking the potential out of any life on the corner. We will be posting a series of these. This is Rusholme and College
A petition is circulating to create pedestrian access under the GO train to join Lappin Ave to Antler St, joining Wallace Emerson & The Junction Triangle.
We know it feels easy to blame your neighbours & the people you see in parks or on the street, but we would urge everyone to think kindly on the people around you, we only have each other. Let’s hold our elected officials to higher standards instead of looking down on each other
Thanks to all of you who came out for
#NewsAid
, holy moly, what an incredible day!!! Thanks to all the bands, volunteers, staff, vendors and more!!! ❤️❤️❤️🗞🗞🗞🎸🎸🎸
You guys are on a roll! We’re still on the hunt for a couple more outstanding variety stores to feature in our 2024 calendar. What are you West End stand outs?

It’s easy to feel worried about the state of media right now. We’re faced with daily news of layoffs, closures and corporate buyouts. Revered institutions and beloved favourites all reeling from the mercurial state of journalism in an unsteady, ever-changing world.
Unfortunately, we had to turn away 5 non-profit housing providers who brought forward proposals to purchase 129 additional homes.
That’s 129 more homes we could have made permanently affordable, but we had to say no because the City doesn’t have the funds. 3/4
A not great photo of a great night out celebrating our fabulous WEP team. Thank you to Bar Biltmore for hosting us, exceptional as always.
Happy holidays, may it be filled with live and light.
Less photos of protests that are only there for the attention, more focus on the volunteers, workers, people getting vaccines and soft serve 🍦. Let’s focus on what’s working, not what’s demanding attention
Thousands of Torontonians are getting vaccines at City Hall. A DJ is playing music, ice cream trucks are giving out cones, & the line is moving well.
A small number of anti-vax protesters arrived, but TPS are keeping them off-site at the corner. The energy at the clinic is great
Join us and
