I recently got to see a handwriting app in development that Yiran is working on. Really impressed. The focus on explicit instruction of high leverage components of FMS/writing with spaced retrieval could be a game-changer. @AlphaSchoolATX @gauntletai

"Keep the hands in mind" — indeed. Fine motor skills (FMS) have been largely overlooked in the era of the internet. A new meta-analysis identified a positive correlation between FMS and academic success, and the details are fascinating. The study aggregated 118 articles to

The same goes for periodic trend graphs. They can’t “analyze” it if they don’t know what effective nuclear charge is and what atomic radius, ionization energy, and electronegativity mean.

Students can’t “analyze” a graph of declining global birth rates without prior knowledge: what fertility rate means, why education access matters, what urbanization does. Without that conceptual base, they’re not analyzing—they’re eyeballing lines. Knowledge drives the thinking.

Here is a 2025 slide show from WSRA denying Dyslexia again. Contrast to this publication from Yale… teachers deserve better then an outdated teacher group whose mission is to keep them in the dark on best practices.

In Wisconsin Even Dyslexia Is Political This article from 2018 shows WSRA’s position on Dyslexia. Basically it’s not real. @WisconsinDPI by the way Barb Novak who is charge of Wi literacy initiative was president of WSRA the year before. https://t.co/8KpZt3n3TE

I need to revisit @ReadingRockets webpage more. So much really great stuff on there. I’ve been reading about sentence combining. I like how they suggest using old @FountasPinnell leveled readers to do just that. https://t.co/ioqj7WZhkH Those materials are just collecting dust.

The decline in English-class book reading is very real. We did a deep dive, and found many teens assigned just 1 or 2 books per year. Instead, they're reading excerpts on a screen, like this one, 859 words of "Beloved."

Much like Santa, I have a Nice List of teachers who lead my PDs, praise me and my leadership at every faculty meeting, look to me as a mentor, and of course, receive excellent evaluations without having to be observed.

Given there's been 15 years of criticizing the ACA I would have expected Republicans to have a better health care idea than $1500 HSA accounts. The healthcare system has significant problems but this isn't a solution to any of them.

@rpondiscio Yes! 👏 I, too, observe that adults make judgments about the causes of children’s behavior without adequate assessment—and frequently without the credentials to do so. Presuming trauma in a student is, in effect, practicing as a health service provider without a license. In

This is the biggest issue in US K-12 Ed right now no one is paying attention to. Science Ed is way way off the rails and no one (in a leadership position) is even attempting to fix it.

We don't really know how much of a balance of explicit teaching and inquiry we need in science because science education people don't do the right studies. I don't know when it's appropriate to try inquiry with 1st graders or really even how to do it.
