Thanks to campaigning from Parliamentarians, CSOs, and the public, DWP’s attempts to spy on bank accounts were quashed in 2024. I wrote about why we need to keep this momentum 2025 ⤵️

👀 If the DWP spies on bank accounts, it would effectively criminalise poverty, treating people as suspects just for being in the social security system, writes Susannah Copson from Big Brother Watch. https://t.co/HWJmUpdyez

Giving the DWP new powers to target welfare recipients for monitoring is the latest measure which will make life harder for disabled people.

In the past, DWP software has wrongly flagged more than 200,000 people for suspected fraud. Giving them more powers to monitor our bank accounts will further erode our civil liberties. We co-wrote to @leicesterliz to stop these policy proposals. https://t.co/hBPx1dV4EP

Our response to Starmer’s bank spying plans in “Fraud, Error and Debt Bill” in full: https://t.co/NeIEh78lt3 I also want to give context & explain why this is *exactly the same* so far as the Tory Govt’s benefits bank spying powers Labour criticised & we defeated just 3m ago🧵

Starmer is to announce a new fraud, error and debt bill to ‘modernise the DWP’. This ie already covered by existing legislation. It will terrify people and perpetuate the public’s misperception benefits fraud is a huge problem in this country. Reminder: PIP fraud rate is 0%.

Please no…. This sounds worrying like the Sunak govt’s mass bank spying plans that we defeated a couple of months ago! It’s packaged as ‘targeted’ BUT sounds like the same duty on banks to monitor claimants - they can only do so if scanning all accounts https://t.co/AHyNf5UbCO
