“We are leaderless but we are not powerless.” Gordon Brown masterful this AM. Linking 5mil children plunged into poverty with ill-timed Tory tax rises, he shows command of macro + micro, short + long term that doesn’t exist in politics now. And he’s right: Britain needs a plan.

So @RachelReevesMP didn’t respond to Autumn Statement. She set the agenda: 💥Pension reform to unlock new funding for Britain 💥Planning reform to unleash building in Britain And asked the election-defining question: Are you better off after 13 years of Tory government? Hmm.

This must be amongst the most interesting policy proposals to appear on front page of The Times for a while. Very proud of colleagues @InstituteGC and beyond who have reached beyond political paradigms to set out how we meet the challenges of tomorrow. Full report to follow.

Labour can provide this but needs to rapidly rebuild credibility. A sensible, smart leader in KS is helping but we need to go faster. How? @InstituteGC has offered four clear steers. (10/12)

Loved hearing from Knowsley parents tonight about their aspirations for their kids and our communities. They had so many good ideas - from uni visits to wraparound childcare. We can make them happen, together, by putting Knowsley at the heart of the next Labour government.

Instead, it’s age that divides us. We saw this on full display in 2019 (left 📷 .) But as right 📷 shows, all is not lost. Older, former Labour voters want the ‘social’ of ‘socialism’ as much as their younger compatriots. That’s a big old space to be filled. (8/12)

First, where did the 11.5m lost voters go in 2019? Approximately: 🔵 50% went Tory 🟠🟢🟡 25% went LD,SNP or Green ❌25% didn’t vote at all Can a progressive agenda speak to these seemingly disparate groups? (2/12)

🤷‍♂️ Irrelevant: They see Labour as prioritising anyone but ‘ordinary working people’, pensioners and the poor. And our lost voters locate themselves firmly in the centre of the political spectrum - but see Labour far to the left of them. (4/12)

The #BlairBrown documentary is extraordinary. There are so many lessons from New Labour that are as applicable today as they were at the height of Tony and Gordon’s leadership. We must heed them.

1. Being led by science is a myth and risks indecision - respect it, but lead. TB did this. From AZ trial, it was clear delaying dosing intervals gets more people protected quicker. We discussed with scientists, TB made the intervention, govt adopted it and lives were saved.

The centre ground exists alright but it’s a political philosophy championing moderation not a policy suite. It’s pragmatic, progressive & ultimately respects voter > activist. Poorly practiced by Labour since Blair. Excellent from ⁦ @Dannythefink

Gordon Brown’s most impressive achievement was uniting G20+ countries to take collective action on financial crisis. Two weeks from conclusion of G20 Summit in Rome, we need that level of leadership to vaccinate the world - and reopen it. Sadly, it’s never been more absent.

Sitting in a waiting room post vaccination and feeling pretty euphoric. 💪 A vaccine bounce for the government makes total sense if 30m+ people have had this experience in the last five months.

5) The point of politics is to make lives better for people and empower them to be the best version of themselves. So, commit to doing what works, not just what works ideologically. Ultimately, power is the way to progress. Ideological purity without power is impotence.

Less than 100 years ago, Liverpool produced more tax revenue than London. The potential of my city and its surrounding regions is huge. Its needs leadership to match and while there are pockets of brilliance, we still have a way to go. We need a plan.

The spin doctors are out in force on #RutherglenandHamiltonWest result. Was it SNP voters staying home or a wave of inspiration pulling voters to Labour? Our timely, comprehensive polling led by @PeterKellner1 has the answers. A bold plan for Britain can swing seats in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🧵(1/7)

UEFA blaming fans grim. But difference between now and years back is people take photos - and there are enough circulating that clearly show this to be an abject failure on part of stadium authorities.
