After 10 years of 99pi being an independent production, with our 10th year probably being our biggest ever-- putting out three special project spin offs and a best selling book-- I’ve decided to sell the company to SiriusXM, specifically Stitcher (their podcast company)
This is well documented, but my vexillological first love is the Chicago flag. Reply with your favorite. No hate, just love. Pick one and post it. Let's make a pretty flag thread.
Dear
@BarackObama
, I'm doing a year-long podcast book club breaking down The Power Broker on my show 99% Invisible. You've said "it helped to shape how I think about politics." Would you come on the show & talk about that? It'll be very fun & we'll get a lot of people reading it
We just published our 500th episode. That amount of history can be daunting if you're coming across a podcast for the first time, so if you'd like to help us celebrate that milestone, gently guide your friends or followers to an episode you like. That would be amazing. Thank you!
You’ll never notice the sound of anything different, except I get to be involved more in the stories. So much of my job had become running a business and not making a podcast. I desperately needed that to change.
Just outta curiosity. Does
@romanmars
say “This is 99% invisible,I’m Roman Mars” everytime for every new episode or was it recorded once and been in use since?
Just got my copy of The Power Broker. Maybe I should have thought twice about hardcover. This thing is a beast.
@romanmars
when does the first episode drop? I'm looking forward to reading along.

I was just starting grad school when the lab went online. I remember telling one of my professors that I found it distracting looking at band pages and searching for guitar tabs on the internet and he said...
I still believe in the ongoing mission of Radiotopia and the amazing work of PRX on the forefront of public radio and I hope you continue to support them. I certainly do. I’m personally donating $1,000,000 to PRX/Radiotopia so they keep going strong.
The Netherlands is now a cycling paradise, but that was far from inevitable. After being nearly pushed off the road in favor of cars in the 1970s, bikes fought their way back in one of the great comebacks in history.
I know we’ve already covered this on the show, but modern weather forecasting is a true marvel and we take for granted how much better it has gotten in such a short amount of time.
It’s shockingly hard to find the max psi number on a car tire. It’s there, but tiny and mixed in with a bunch of other numbers and words, when it should really be the only thing on a tire. As a driver, it’s the only info needed.
For the 500(!) episode of

we are writing love letters to vernacular architecture. Such as, the DINGBATS of SoCal or southern US porches. Do you have any favorites we should include?
I was getting flowers today and as a way of getting to know me, the owner/arranger asked “what are you a genius at?” and I thought this was a pretty delightful way to get to know someone
Every year I think we should do a story about Spirit stores that starts when they open around Labor Day and goes until they close after Halloween. Every year I only remember around now, so it never happens. I find them so fascinating.
Me literally holding my heart talking to Robert Caro for the first episode of The 99pi Power Broker Breakdown. We cover the intro, part 1, and part 2, plus a long convo with the great man himself on Jan 19. Check for it in the 99% Invisible feed.
The flag of Ukraine is great and beautiful with lovely symbolism. But are there any designers/painters/color theory people who can explain why brain thinks it’s upside down when I see it at first glance, even thought I know it’s not? 🇺🇦?
@hankgreen
Yeah, this is why Roberts wrote a separate opinion. Uphold the ban but not overturn Roe. He’s not exactly an ally but he thought the rapid change & overturning of precedent was bad. Those 3 Trump appointees gave the old radicals the votes to make the most extreme stance possible
20 years ago a man claiming to be a “sexpert” from the future handed me this book (after he had sex with me) and told me to use it to become a successful podcaster. It worked! Now the timeline has caught up and I know the truth.

Was going to skip this episode thinking “idc about flags 🤷♀️ but damnit if that damn Japanese Good Luck flag story didn’t have me in tears on my morning jog today. Well done y’all. Great story 👏👏
The most thoughtful and arresting aspects of The Last Of Us were front and center week to week in Station Eleven. If you missed it, definitely give it your time.

— on how great design can lead to a great society:
I chose Stitcher as my new partner because I already knew, trusted and respected everyone there. Peter Clowney will oversee 99pi with me. I have a long history with Peter. He’s the best.
Please do me one last favor and subscribe to 99% Invisible. It’s good, thoughtful media of which I’m proud to be a part. RT, share, subscribe. It’s about how the world works, why it is the way it is and that it’s not all bad, except when it is.
The British stole a lot of stuff and a new ABC podcast tells the not-so-polite history of a handful of objects that offer fascinating and complex stories of colonialism and thievery. We feature one ep & talk to the show creator
@MarcFennell
. It's so good!
I never intentionally type fir. I always mean to type for. This is the only instance when I want spell check to be more aggressive. Instead, it’s so certain I really mean fir, it gives me the option of displaying a little 🌲 tree
The most recent three regular episodes of

are so great: bleep button, the infrastructure that allows toddlers to do errands in Japan, and North Korean statues in Africa. You should catch up if you’re behind or get on board if you’re new to us. You’ll be happy!
We reference masturbation in an upcoming episode and I say “Jack off” in a joking way. Should the episode have a disclaimer up top? I’ve been saying it’s not necessary but my younger colleagues keep telling me it is! They didn’t grow up with PG rated 80s sex comedies
Radiotopia is a groundbreaking network and non-profit collective... it has never been a company on purpose, and as such, even though I was the co-founder, I never owned any part of it. I think that was so weird to people that no one really understood it.
@hankgreen
It’s destructive and awful. It has nothing to do with reasoned argument, it barely pretends to be. It’s so disingenuous. It’s all about power.
I want the next James Bond to go on a mission and finish that mission. And then there’ll be another movie with another mission and complete that mission without referencing the previous mission.
It became more successful than I ever imagined when we dreamed it up in a cabin in rural Massachusetts several years ago. I raised money and worked side by side with amazing podcasters, each of them retaining ownership and control of their own work.
Young, super-talented video artist tweeted a sample TikTok video he made using audio from the show asking to be an intern. We were like, let’s just hire you to make videos! Follow his journey here & our stories on TikTok. It’ll be a cool mix of adaptations & new stuff

they all got bonuses, equity, and higher pay and they get some security the show will keep going even if some platform flips a switch and changes the podcast business model overnight
