Warm congratulations to
@LulaOficial
for his victory in Brazil's free and fair presidential election. The people of Brazil should be proud of their credible, peaceful election process. 🇧🇷
How many more people have to die before we reinstate the assault weapons ban & the limit on high-capacity magazines & pass universal background checks? After they passed in 1994, there was a big drop in mass shooting deaths. When the ban expired, they rose again. We must act now.
America has spoken and democracy has won. Now we have a President-Elect and Vice President-Elect who will serve all of us and bring us all together. Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on your momentous victory!
Barbara Bush was a remarkable woman. She had grit & grace, brains & beauty. She was fierce & feisty in support of her family & friends, her country & her causes. She showed us what an honest, vibrant, full life looks like. Hillary and I mourn her passing and bless her memory.
On this Father’s Day I’m thinking of the thousands of children separated from their parents at the border. These children should not be a negotiating tool. And reuniting them with their families would reaffirm America’s belief in & support for all parents who love their children.
Today we faced an unprecedented assault on our Capitol, our Constitution, and our country.
The assault was fueled by more than four years of poison politics spreading deliberate misinformation, sowing distrust in our system, and pitting Americans against one another.
Twenty-four years ago, I signed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban into law. It, along with other policies, led to a 33-year low in the murder rate. We’ve done it before—we should do it again.
Hillary and I just proudly cast our ballots for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. They will work tirelessly to heal our divisions and build a better future for all of us. If you haven’t done so already, vote today!
Congratulations, Doug Jones. You were a great US Attorney, and you ran a terrific campaign. You deserve this win. It’s a win for the people of Alabama.
This week
@POTUS
struck a serious deal to cut drug prices for people on Medicare and fight climate change, received a stellar July jobs report, shrank the unemployment rate to 3.5%, eliminated bin-Laden’s successor, & gas prices fell to a 50+ day low. Great week, Mr. President!
John McCain believed that every citizen has a responsibility to make something of the freedoms given by our Constitution, and from his heroic service in the Navy to his 35 years in Congress, he lived by his creed every day.
We have lost one of the most extraordinary Justices ever to serve on the Supreme Court. Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life and landmark opinions moved us closer to a more perfect union. And her powerful dissents reminded us that we walk away from our Constitution’s promise at our peril.
Grateful to the Biden Administration for providing long overdue support for the people of Puerto Rico to rebuild from the 2017 hurricanes and prepare for future storms.
Like people all around the world, Hillary and I are thinking about Aretha Franklin tonight & listening to her music that has been such an important part of our lives the last 50 years. We hope you’ll lift her up by listening and sharing her songs that have meant the most to you.
Thank you to the
@SecretService
and all law enforcement agencies who responded to this week's incidents. They work tirelessly to keep our country and communities safe. I am forever grateful for their efforts.
I join in condemning today’s assault on Brazil’s democratic institutions. It is crucial that the peaceful transition of power is upheld and the will of the people respected.
Hillary and I mourn the passing of President George H. W. Bush, and give thanks for his great long life of service, love and friendship. I am grateful for every minute I spent with him and will always hold our friendship as one of my life’s greatest gifts.
No Clinton Foundation funds—dedicated to Haiti or otherwise—were used to pay for Chelsea’s wedding. It’s not only untrue, it’s a personal insult to me, to Hillary, and to Chelsea and Marc.
Pelé was not only a football legend but also a humanitarian and global icon. He used his platform to empower disenfranchised children and inspire generations around the world. We give thanks for his life and legacy.
Today we honor all those who lost their lives 17 years ago in NY, VA, and PA, their loved ones, and the brave first responders who risked their own lives to save others. The best tribute we can pay is to live our lives in a way that redeems the years they could not have.
The heartbreaking violence in Venezuela must stop. I stand with President
@JGuaido
, the National Assembly, and the people of
#Venezuela
as they embrace their right to live in peace, choose their leaders, and decide their future, in harmony with their neighbors.
E pluribus unum — out of diversity comes a deeper strength and unity rooted in the timeless ideals we celebrate today. It's "We the People" not "Us vs. Them." Happy 4th of July!
John Lewis gave all he had to redeem America’s unmet promise of equality and justice for all, and to create a place for us to build a more perfect union together. In so doing he became the conscience of the nation.
I’ve traveled and worked in Haiti, and across Africa and Central America. The countries the president described with his epithet do not exist. Some thoughts as we remember those lost in Haiti eight years ago today:
I mourn those murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue and pray for the wounded. We must all send an unequivocal message that the violence and hatred that has been unleashed and fanned across America will not be tolerated. It won’t end until we stop it.
I’ve tested positive for Covid. I’ve had mild symptoms, but I’m doing fine overall and keeping myself busy at home.
I’m grateful to be vaccinated and boosted, which has kept my case mild, and I urge everyone to do the same, especially as we move into the winter months.
Special visit today with a great friend -- and now, a best-selling author. Luckily I had a freshly laundered pair of
@BillClinton
socks to mark the occasion.
We expect our elected officials to protect the right to vote and to ensure every vote is counted. This attack on the Postal Service —an institution as old as the Republic itself and depended upon, and trusted by, millions of Americans— is designed to ensure that neither is done.
Congratulations to President Carter on becoming the oldest living President in history. May your new title and good deeds continue for many years to come.
A free press is critical to a free society—the detention of journalists anywhere is unacceptable. The Reuters journalists being held in Myanmar should be released immediately.
This weapon was illegal in the USA between 1994-2004. Uses of it in mass shootings declined. And America was still a free nation with a right of self-defense. There's no reason we can't renew the Assault Weapon Ban today.
Happy Birthday President
@JoeBiden
! Thank you for your service to the American people. Here’s hoping your day is filled with friends, family, and a scoop or two of ice cream!
A happy birthday for Hillary:
✔️A great day with family
✔️ Chardonnay toast with friends (virtually)
✔️A long walk in the woods
There’s only one more thing that will make her day perfect, and we need your help: Everyone get out and vote!
50 years after Dr. King's last birthday, it's up to all of us to keep his Dream of a Beloved Community alive: don't demean and belittle, inspire and empower; don't isolate and abuse, embrace and serve.
As the numbers continue to rise, we can never forget that there are real people, each with their own lives, stories, families, and friends behind every statistic. My heart is with all those who have lost someone to COVID-19, are fighting the virus, or know someone who is.
Happy birthday Betty White! You're a national treasure. Hillary and I hope you have a good one and wish you many, many more. With a little luck, we'll find a rerun of Golden Girls tonight!
We have talked, tweeted, and delayed long enough. This is about who we are as a country, and what America will look like years from now. It’s time to reinstate the assault weapons ban and make background checks universal.
Five years after the devastating attack on teachers and children in Sandy Hook, we mourn them and remember them. America needs common-sense gun laws more than ever and we must not stop pushing until we get them.
If there’s anyone with the strength and courage to fight this, it’s you, John. Hillary and I love you, and we join with millions of other Americans in praying for you and your family.
This morning we welcomed our son, Jasper Clinton Mezvinsky. We are overflowing with love and gratitude and can’t wait to introduce him to his big sister and brother.
Salman Rushdie has lived his life courageously and refused to let intimidation silence him, his art, and what he stands for. I am keeping him in my thoughts and praying for his recovery.
Led by inspiring, determined students of Stoneman Douglas High School, today we saw hundreds of thousands across America
#MarchForOurLives
to demand an end to gun violence. Waiting is not the answer. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, "The time is always right to do what is right.”
Happy 75th birthday to my best friend. I marvel at the way you approach life and constantly work to make more good things happen for more people. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel like the luckiest man alive.
The accounts from today's school shooting in Parkland, Florida strike fear into all Americans. Is it safe to send our kids to school? Are we safe in our homes and communities?
No one deserves to die the way George Floyd did. And the truth is, if you’re white in America, the chances are you won’t. That truth is what underlies the pain and the anger that so many are feeling and expressing.
My full statement on his death:
We all remember where we were when the planes struck nineteen years ago. We remember the confusion, the fear, and the pain. Today we remember the loved ones lost, the bravery and resolve of the first responders, and how we came together as a nation. Never forget.
I’m saddened by the passing of Christine McVie. “Don’t Stop” was my ’92 campaign theme song - it perfectly captured the mood of a nation eager for better days. I’m grateful to Christine & Fleetwood Mac for entrusting us with such a meaningful song. I will miss her.
On the 4th of July and every day, we should celebrate the ultimate source of America’s strength—the promise of our founding ideals of equality and freedom, and the power of We the People.
