@Wharton
! I know lots of people are getting bad news about their jobs right now. Without being blind to that, I'm (1) thankful and (2) amazed this could happen to someone like me. I wrote this to publicly celebrate & thank others:
🧵on a crucial & 🤯 study. Immigrants represent 16% of US inventors but account for 36% of patents. 23% is a direct contribution as authors. 13% indirect by making *native* inventors more productive. Let’s break the direct & indirect effect down:

I see a lot of

posts about working insane hours & having no personal life. I wanna state that it's possible to have a fulfilling & successful academic career while working reasonable hours & enjoying personal/family life! Let's model this more often! A mini 🧵
Do yourself a favor and read this article on skilled immigrants and firms by my superstar colleague
@BrittaGlennon
. It's a masterful summary of why firms are crucial to understanding how immigration affects our economic prosperity.
How did the US
#dairy
industry develop? Because of Danish
#immigrants
in the late 19th century. Places with more
#Danish
newcomers specialized in dairy farming and used more modern techniques. Super cool study showing the crucial role of migration in
#knowledge
transfer.
I'm excited to begin serving as an Associate Editor at
@SMJ_Jour
! It's an honor to play a role in evaluating & accepting cutting edge research. I look forward to learning from and shaping the direction of new ideas in the field of strategic management.
Does
#immigration
make
#inventors
more productive? Or do more
#productive
inventors emigrate?
The answer is both, but 85% of the effect is because migrating *makes* inventors more productive.
Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not!
I've been playing around with
@ConnectedPapers
. Input a paper and it generates a graph of dozens of related papers based on topical similarity. A real game changer for discovering related works, literature reviews, & making connections across fields. Great tool!
The stories we tell really matter. Exposure to narratives of

Saddened by the passing of
@BarsadeSigal

Many good points here. Americans are always scared of the recent wave of newcomers, but they always integrate successfully—no matter where they come from.
In every way that I can see, Hispanic Americans seem to be following the same path toward integration into American society and culture that the Irish followed over a century earlier:
Woke up to an email accepting a paper! “Synergy in Mergers and Acquisitions: Typology, Lifecycles, and Value” 2+ years under review, 4 big revisions. Very happy! Will post thread on the paper soon. For now, 👇
Why do we keep rolling the dice on which firms get talented people? Do we really want to randomly decide who gets to
#innovate
and
#grow
their business? And how much value do we destroy by keeping talent out?
Just to cite one example:
USCIS has received enough electronic registrations for unique beneficiaries during the initial registration period to reach the FY 25 H-1B cap. We have notified those who were randomly selected. For more information, visit:
I just told my only daughter (7 years old) that
@KamalaHarris
will be the first woman the be VP. She told me she wants to be VP one day too. Thank you senator Harris and congratulations!
🧵on return migration
Most people don't realize that a very high % of
#immigrants
*voluntarily* return home. This new paper shows a return rate of 40% for those who arrived to the US between 2005-2007, driven by low earnings in America.
#Writing
is about momentum (for me). If I'm stuck, I start writing the easy & mechanical parts of a paper (variables, results, table descriptions). That gets me going. And when the wheels are rolling, I can move on to harder & more creative parts (introduction, arguments, etc.)
Exactly 10 years ago I defended my dissertation! Next to me is my wife (expecting). Days later I was hooded by

Important new paper by Alessandro Caiumi &
@giov_peri
During 2000-2019,
#immigrants
in the US had a positive & significant effect (+1.7 to +2.6) on the
#wages
of less educated native workers & a positive effect on
#employment
Interesting work on how social
#network
structure affects
#migration
decisions.
It’s common to think that the decision to migrate is primarily an economic one. But it’s not. It’s fundamentally social.
``How do social networks influence the decision to migrate?
@jblumenstock
, Chi, and Tan analyze a nation’s mobile phone logs, and find that dense networks matter more than extensive networks.''
Do yourself another favor and read this paper too! The contributions of
#immigrants
to
#innovation
is disproportionately large.
@leflix311
&
@emiguelez
have been studying this for years. Another must-read for anyone who wants to live in a prosperous society.
Immigrants directly invent more than their expected share because they:
1. Are more productive over their career (graph 1)
2. Patent in more novel fields
3. Are more likely to move into highly productive tech hubs
4. Bring scientific knowledge from foreign countries (graph 2)

I’ve never used this platform to discuss my religious views. Today I’ll make an exception. Christ taught “love one another” and “blessed are the peacemakers”. I try to live by those words. Yesterday’s “Bible photo op” was cynical and antithetical to everything Jesus said and did.
Why train so much foreign talent and then throw it out? It’s economic suicide, especially when foreign talent complements native talent. Also fascinating that WSJ explicitly calls out the “cultural reasons” (= xenophobia) of restrictionists in DHS.

Thread on how we collectively frame

For me, the most useful principle in finding work-life balance is this:
The scarce resource in research jobs isn't time. It's insight!
Therefore, we must seek to maximize the inputs that enhance our insight instead of maximizing time, which is not the most important input.
Thankful for all the invisible people keeping us safe: doctors, nurses, shelf stockers, parents, janitors, etc.

Viewing
#immigrants
as *only*
#labor
(like this policy) is self-defeating. All of us (not just immigrants) are also consumers, investors, taxpayers, ideas generators, etc in the economy. If you get that, you need not fear new people. Quite the opposite!

Any social scientist doing empirical work needs to know the
#history
of the issue being studied for proper
#interpretation
and
#causal
inference. Statistics alone are insufficient.
This paper helped me understand how that applies to my field (business strategy). 👇
Why should we study history and do historical social science?
Generically, because it is an intellectual pleasure. More specifically, because ahistorical thinking (aka presentism, short-termism) makes us miss out on many things. (repost)👇
Staggering numbers! This table tells you all you need to know about the importance of foreign students for the US economy & higher ed. These fields are some of the most important for the future of the economy & generate tons of jobs! Source:

Everyone talks about synergy in M&A. But the concept is vaguely conceived. We need to clarify & expand our conceptualization of synergy. In a recent study, Emilie Feldman and I developed the five synergy framework to do just that. Read a summary here:
Last night’s naturalization ceremony is one of the most cynical acts of propaganda I’ve ever seen. From an administration *explicitly* trying to end most *legal* immigration, and well on its way to achieve it already (see table).
