2024 has been INSANE so far, and I need to brag about it... So let's start with pubs. My lab has put together 8 papers: 3 accepted on PR journals, 5 on @biorxivpreprint on their way. 5 on structural studies of ATTR fibrils (16 cryoEM structures!), 3 on diagnostic development 🔥

Hi!! This will be a long one but please stay with me! After 3 years doing talks for Puerto Rican undergraduates, high and middle school students talking, about environmental sciences, biology and topics surrounding my research work, I was asked to formalize my efforts. (1/?)

I’m more than happy to have been a part of this project with the Saelices Lab! ❤️ There’s a lot more to discover about ATTR amyloidosis, so the future looks very exciting!

This just happened! I am extremely proud of my team for all their hard work, patience, and perseverance. The first research article from our laboratory is now available on @NatureComms! We found an unprecedented structural variability in ATTR fibrils! 1/n https://t.co/ryuEnDI93p

Things I wish my academic friends and colleagues knew about Puerto Ricans 🇵🇷: 1) We say “buen provecho” (translates to bon appetite) to not only wish you a good meal, but it is also common curtesy amongst family, friends, and strangers. Talking during meals is not seen as rude.

Our first cryo-EM fibril structure of tau (in collaboration with the Saelices lab!). Structure encodes disease-associated patterns of acetylation. Congrats to Li Li and Binh! @SaelicesL, @UTSWCAND, @UTSWBrain, @UTSWNews https://t.co/NrzDHhSl3d

The U.S. launched a racist eugenics program in Puerto Rico in the 1930s — sterilizing about one third of Puerto Rican women by 1976, many forced or coerced. It was just one chapter of U.S. colonial eugenics programs and medical experiments targeting women of color. 🧵(1/8)

Puerto Rico will need more than our prayers. Stay tuned for ways you can aid and help different communities in the aftermath. I will create a thread with the ones I see/hear about (feel free to DM) Let’s not forget about this next week. Recovery takes weeks, months, years…
