John von Neumann has become a symbol of a pop-hereditarianism that is as annoying as the blank slatism it once criticized. So I investigated. Turns out all the main John von Neumann legends are based on pop-sci book slop.

Imagine typing this out and thinking it reflects anything coherent at all. Like the NSF is some secret cabal and not, you know, US SCIENTISTS. GMAFB
@Samuel_Gregson Do you think the NSF isnt predatory billionaires ? LOLOLOL

@BachmannRudi Hossenfelder is an utter fraud. She is bitter she got tossed out of academia for being found out as a scumbag grifter and now makes bank telling anti-science lies.

“I’m not saying science should be defunded and placed in the hands of predatory billionaires! I’m just saying science is completely corrupt and dysfunctional and defunding it will be awesome! Why are people misrepresenting me!?” Evidence to contrary: “So what!?” Standard.

Comparing polygenic scores across populations like this produces completely meaningless results that will tend to recapitulate crude environmental correlations. This approach has now been critiqued dozens of times and it keeps rearing its head ...

This person is 1) not from the US and, 2) a crank. Her entire online persona is about drumming up controversy in the sciences, so please, spare me the bullshit and go back to peddling nonsense on youtube.
I find it stunning that people in academia are so unable to see the writing at the wall. This is end-day denial in a broken system. There's no coming back from this.

We are pleased to announce that our new study explaining the missing heritability of many phenotypes using WGS data from ~347,000 UK Biobank participants has just been published in @Nature. Please check out our manuscript here: https://t.co/PK2DIpshOQ.

Kudos to UCSD for releasing this report. Similar issues exist at all UCs, and hopefully this is the first step towards course correction. This report should be juxtaposed with the stories of many excellent students who are rejected by all UCs or only admitted at a lower ranked
NEW: UC San Diego has released a new report documenting a “steep decline in the academic preparedness” of its freshmen. The number of entering students needing remedial math has exploded from 1/100 to 1/8. They’ve had to create a second remedial class covering elementary and

So curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates— scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (but doubt that he reads); pride in a friend’s or relative’s

How do GWAS and rare variant burden tests rank gene signals? In new work @Nature with Jeff Spence, @jkpritch, and our wonderful coauthors we find the key factors are what we call Specificity, Length, and Luck! 🧬🧪🧵 https://t.co/rNzekB06la

Announcing our much-awaited updated aladynoulli, a fully interpretable Bayesian model that considers predictive and explanatory disease trajectories across the life course for individuals, anchored on underlying PGS.

Stop the hype. IQ embryo selection is not about "better babies"; it's a snake oil scam fueled by bad science. It has zero control over the thousands of linked disease phenotypes. This is reckless genetic tinkering, not public, not healthy.
Embryo selection for IQ, health, and longevity — the most important social / public health advance of the 21st century to date. Proud to be an investor in @herasight

Response/Update:
@nmancuso_ @SponceyM @lu_sichu @krichard121212 Fair question, but yes, we made sure that sibs were set aside at the very beginning and not used in the imputation or any other step before validation.

Stumbled on this thread from two years ago about the challenges of interpretation for within-family polygenic score analyses and all five points remain essentially unresolved.
I'm largely in agreement with the conclusion of this piece that carefully conducted behavioral genetics analyses are worthwhile. But I was very surprised to see this claim that issues with PGS are tractable and "have substantially been addressed". A few unaddressed issues below:

Calling on all scientists to call out hype, grift & BS when u see it. If u don't, u risk anti-science grifters leveraging overhyped & underdelivered promises & shoddy science to destroy public trust in the enterprise. Keep science & science comm grounded & truthful.

Alex blocked me so I can't reply, but, herasight didn't make anything viable. They released a paper that claims it is viable. A lot hinges on whether or not the siblings were included in the imputation step w/ unrelateds or had computationally derived pheno indep.

Genetic determinism is alive and well, folks.
@anshulkundaje With respect, you dodged the question. We all know that health and education only help you reach your genetic ceiling, not raise it. Please don't parrot the safest talking point. So again: if reliable IQ enhancement tech existed, would you oppose it?
