Public transit is a better form of this argument. If there is enough transit infrastructure that you value cars less and own fewer, GDP is lower but your life is probably better. (GDP is good, but I always think of this issue in US/Europe GDP comparisons.)
GDP is simply a measure of money supply & velocity. It's an economists construct. There is little to no tie to to utility. You crash your car. You spend $50,000 on repairs and hospital bills. GDP goes up $50,000, but you’re no better off than before.
