This, to me, is what artists owe to the world in an indoor, screen-saturated age. If people are going to experience the world second hand, fair enough. Let it not be third hand or fourth hand.

simclusters was to social network formation what transformers were to…everything else. truly a remarkable discovery with emergent properties that even its intelligent designers couldn’t have foreseen. embedding similarity is a major regression

I don’t understand how Trump is a King when he won every single swing state, the electoral college and popular vote in a democratic election.

The issues that people attribute to a lack of trust usually have some specific and fixable cause. They would not be fixed by the world somehow just having better vibes.

This is not to say at all that your own feelings of distrust are incorrect or unjustified, but rather that they have the possibility of being interrogated and addressed.

We would make a lot more progress on every issue supposedly caused by a lack of "trust" if people replaced "we live in a low trust society" with "I do not trust the society I live in." The former is largely not actionable, either by being too broad or too abstract.

It is much more difficult to measure whether users want to eat potato chips than to measure whether eating is occurring.

In a house full of potato chips, people eat potato chips, but many people choose not to buy potato chips at the grocery for that reason. This extends to all recommender systems, but the equivalent of "not buying it so you aren't tempted" is not implemented or not respected.

The fact that rotation can fight gravity on exactly one plane, because in 3D you can only have one axis of rotation, really clarified things for me.
