Today marks four years since I first tweeted from this account. Now seems like a good time to take a bit of a step back. There will still be tweets, just not as frequently. A big thank you to all followers, particularly those who bought my book (in paperback later this year).
This Day In Irish History by Padraic Coffey is out now! With one entry for every day of the year, this book marks the anniversaries of momentous events in Irish history: in politics, medicine, music, sport and innovation. @ThisDayIrish

This day 47 years ago – 20 July 1974 – a group of women protested the hitherto male-only bathing place of Forty Foot, Sandycove, Co Dublin. Among those protesting were journalist Nell McCafferty, politician Nuala Fennell and poet Mary D'Arcy. From then on, the area was shared.

This day three years ago – 25 May 2018 – 66.9% of Irish voters supported repealing the constitutional ban on abortion. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said, “Today we as a people have spoken, and we say we trust women and respect women to make their own decisions and their own choices.”

In honour of International Women's Day, here are a few Irish women who made significant contributions to Ireland and the world. A thread.

Delighted that my friend Ferdia Lennon's debut novel Glorious Exploits has been chosen as RTÉ's Book of the Week, on top of the praise it's already received from Roddy Doyle and Emma Donoghue. Be sure to pick it up if you like contemporary Irish fiction! https://t.co/3GwLBOZKpa

Crack open any page of Ferdia Lennon's debut novel and you'd be hard pressed to guess it takes place in Ancient Sicily some two and a half thousand years ago.

It was impossible not to be moved after Tom Hand, Emily's father, spoke about his daughter when it was believed she had been killed. Hamas should release her, unconditionally, along with any other hostages captured on Oct 7th. I cannot see why anyone would disagree with that.
The Irish Embassy to Israel has confirmed that Emily Hand, an eight-year-old Irish-Israeli girl, is believed to have been abducted and not murdered by Hamas on October 7.

In 1919, Emir Faisal, future King of Iraq, wrote the following: “We feel that that the Arabs and Jews are cousins in race... We Arabs, especially the educated among us, look with the deepest sympathy on the Zionist movement... we will wish the Jews a most hearty welcome home.”

I'll lose followers for this, but I don't care: 239 hostages are still being held in Gaza by Hamas, the youngest Kfir Bibas (9 months). No matter how righteous you think you are, if you believe taking an infant hostage is excusable, you are not the good guys. #BringThemHomeNow

Just picked up The Disconnect by @roisinkiberd in @vibesandscribes, one of the best independent book shops in Cork. I used to run into Roisin quite a bit in Dublin. Looking forward to giving this a read!

Tragic. The victim blaming of Kim Damti on many Irish social media accounts over the past few days has been sickening. This Irish person hopes her murderers are met with retributive justice.
I am shocked by the lack of compassion shown for Kim Damti (22) on Irish social media over the past few days. This is an Irish citizen, whose whereabouts are unknown since Hamas opened fire on an Israeli music festival on Oct 7th. I hope she is returned to her family, safe.

Fergal Healy’s comment isn’t even the most depraved I’ve seen. I’m logging off this site to spend time with people who actually matter. Those who want to continue spewing bile can do so in my absence.

If you want to know what I am shocked by, just take a look at this comment. Someone denying Kim Damti’s Irishness, and claiming she isn’t a “proper human”, while her family fear for her life.

I love this clip of Michael Gambon, switching between the Dublin accent he had as a child, and the Received Pronunciation and Cockney accents he learned after moving to London.

Neil Jordan's Michael Collins came in for a lot of criticism, but it is hard to deny the power of its climax. And it wouldn't be nearly as powerful without Sinéad O'Connor's rendition of She Moved Through the Fair.

I've listened to this live version of the song 'Two Little Boys', performed by Sinéad O'Connor in 2005, more times than I could count. It's gorgeous. I wish there were a more polished recording available. What a loss to music. https://t.co/vbnaVKOIsy
