By focusing on private occupational coverage, the Government has missed the opportunity to strengthen and expand the State pension which remains the best way to ensure adequate income for all people, in particular women, in older age.

This isn’t about personal choice. It’s about a system that still fails to value care work and women’s time. The gender pension gap in Ireland remains at 35%.

The reasons are clear Women are more likely to take time out of paid work to raise families Women on average earn less than men & are overrepresented in low-paid, part-time sectors Interruptions in employment & lower pay mean fewer opportunities to build up pension contributions

Although there are no major income tax cuts in this Budget, which would have disproportionately benefitted men. This leaves public services vulnerable in the event of a downturn, which will greatly impact women if the services are not protected.

Budget 2026 is a long way from the climate ambition we need – we need stronger climate investments that support environmental goals and women's well-being.

Welcome measures like the extension of the Fuel Allowance & investments in ECEC & healthcare are steps in the right direction. However, there’s a missed opportunity to address systemic gender inequalities & ensure public services are universally accessible & supportive of women.
