The mob that turned up to protest inside the 4 Courts this morning prevented our office from safely bringing an urgent application on behalf of a child with special needs. So we will have to come back and try again tomorrow. Thanks for that 🤯

When David Trimble learnt that Martin McGuinness was seriously sick he wrote him this letter. We really could do with more of this open civility, acknowledgment of someone else’s contribution and basic decency in our political life today
That’s the best speech Leo Varadkar has ever given. Content, tone, explaining carefully the rationale, displaying great human empathy. Proper appreciation of frontline workers in this great fight. Irrespective of political outlook it is time to come together as a great nation.
I met a really dedicated teacher today and asked him how the back to school prep work was coming along.
His reply was revealing:
‘The whingers are whinging and the doers are doing’.
Always good to get inside insights.
I know it’s a horrible time and everyone is rightly stressed but when my 8 year old said ‘Daddy it’s actually lovely to have you around so much’ it makes you think if we have had the balance right.
Once we get our European army, the armchair generals pushing the abandonment of military neutrality in Blackrock and Ballsbridge won’t be the ones on the frontline. The working class kids in Ballymun and Ballyfermot will take the hit.
I’m almost laughing at many of those on this platform arguing for increased militarization and for a greater war effort from Ireland.
90% of them wouldn’t walk through Temple Bar or go on the Luas
At work I encounter lots of accounts and incidences of really horrific child abuse. These people’s experiences have had an enduring impact on their lives.
Let’s not diminish that awfulness by saying that children wearing masks to protect health is child abuse. It really isn’t.
Dealing with a HSE case where a child has been waitlisted since 2015 for occupational therapy input and where that HSE advise that the first appointment will be on 23rd January 2025.
Our system is broken if that is considered in anyway suitable or appropriate
One of the greatest con tricks played on children with added needs is when HSE place them on the early intervention list for therapies, spin this as big progress when they know due to delays those kids will age out of these lists at the age of 6 without ever being seen
In all the tributes to John Hume on his efforts for peace and reconciliation, let’s not forget that one of his enduring achievements and legacies was the establishment of the credit union movement. It helped so many people without access to the banks and loan sharks.
Ireland lost a wonderful and much loved barrister
@katiedawson23
today. She was passionate, hard working, a champion for many who often had no voice, acting in many incredibly difficult cases. But above all else she was just so kind and so generous and so funny. 💔
Update.
Today I withdrew from the Law
Society committee on family and child law.
I am sad that the Law Society have taken a public stand on the two referenda on family and care without any proper consultation with its own members. Many solicitors work incredibly hard for carers
Just bumped into a young guy I used to act for in the Childrens Court a few years ago. His life at the time was really challenged. Lots of people around him could have given up, including himself, but didn’t.
He is flying it now. Showing me photos of his flat, car, workplace. 💪
If spare vaccines were quietly driven over to a community centre in Ballymun or Coolock and given out to local people there, believe me there would be consequences.
I’ve obtained a truly remarkable figure tonight.
10,000 children have been assessed under a HSE model that has been found to be unlawful. Despite the fact that HSE decision makers were warned by so many that it was unlawful.
This is a resigning matter for those in charge
My legal work over the last few years has confirmed one thing.
If we solve the housing crisis we don’t just solve that issue - we make massive progress in other problem areas including mental health and well being, crime, social integration and community cohesion, family rights
There’s only around 38,000 vaccine shots sitting in the fridges tonight whilst the hospitalization figures grow. I deal with the HSE and assessments of need for children every day. Management couldn’t run a bath.
While they are living it up in cricket clubs or Merrion Hotels, it’s the people attending tiny Covid 19 affected funerals, as they buried their loved ones in line with the spirit and the letter of the law, that are in my thoughts.
Frances Fitzgerald wrongly claiming she rescued a dog in Ranelagh continues to be a source of discussion. Was in my local Spar in Castleknock. Says one man in queue to his friend ‘it’s as well the dog wasn’t called Maurice McCabe. He would have been thrown under the bus’ 😂😂😂
A massive advance for childrens rights as the High Court today delivered a body blow to the HSE in their disgraceful new procedure in how children’s needs are assessed under the Disability Act
There will no doubt be many such days ahead as we design a system that puts kids first

A very significant judgment has been delivered this afternoon in the High Court concerning educational assessments under the Disability Act.
The model put forward by the

Tomorrow evening John Hume’s family will attend their cathedral at 9pm to light candles and are inviting people to do the same at 9pm in their own homes. Candles for peace and reconciliation. What a great idea.
Isn’t

an absolute tour de force? I lost count of the number of really important issues she raised in that interview with Claire Byrne. Every single one are unanswerable if we truly value compassion and fairness. She truly is a human rights champion.

Anyone in the HSE who thinks it’s appropriate or acceptable to offer a child in crisis a zoom meeting with a psychiatrist based in Doha shouldn’t be working anywhere near children in crisis.
This man

is one of the kindest, sharpest and most inspiring advocates and mental health campaigners I’ve ever come across. His story needs to be heard and acted upon.

excellent account of McCabe story let’s not fall into the trap that Martin Callinan is a lone wolf. His type exist and thrive in many bodies; within HSE, Tusla, Dept of Education, Dept of Social Protection. They exist because we allow them to do so
It’s mad to think that an administrator employed by the HSE and working from home gets a vaccine ahead of a parent who has received medical training to provide for the complex care needs of a child whose health is severely compromised. How is that caring about carers???

The Stairlift Ascends: An unlikely duo and their new Covid book
After 3 court challenges, a recent appeal oral hearing and countless reviews, we have brilliant news for a mum whose application for Domiciliary Care Allowance has finally been granted and backdated to 2011. A great end to the working week.
There’s nothing natural at all about this.
The natural thing is to see all people in need of safety and who are literally fleeing for their lives in exactly the same way.
HSE referring children with assessed needs to ‘early intervention’ teams knowing they will in fact age out before ever being seen is moral bankruptcy on a grand scale.
The good news is they are fast running out of road with this nonsense. The game playing will be forced to end
I can guarantee you that there are more politicians thinking about their St Patrick’s day trips abroad than they are about carers who need respite and support and disabled people who would like to achieve greater independence, housing, training and education opportunities.
One of the lessons we can learn from Sinead O’Connor’s death is that we should care for and look out for people when they are alive and in need of our support. It’s frankly too late to come along laden down with praise and love afterwards.
Brilliant start to the day. The Noble clan has welcomed a new girl. She was so eager to get here she was born before the hospital could be reached. Our family meet ups will be even more noisy now when restrictions lift. That’s 10 little people under 10 years old.
Now that Catherine Noone has raised autism (in a crass and highly insensitive way),can we now have a grown up discussion on how we empower people with autism, enable children access services and supported educationally, socially and at work? Where are the policies on this?
#GE20
I was in a case today and the young person in care we represent had her birthday today and her social worker managed to get her signed merchandise from her favourite pop band.
How lovely
Quite emotional listening to children on the RTE lunchtime news talking with such excitement about the return to special classes today. Their voices should never have been silenced. They should never have been locked out. Huge lessons to reflect on.
The fact that the Minister for Justice says Irish laws on outdoor dining will be applied on a discretionary basis by our law enforcers tells us everything about the Ireland we live in.
Given their Mum says these three small children witnessed the blood she had lost at the hands of their father and arising out of his alleged beatings, I’m not sure this is the greatest observation of Joe Brolly’s career.
#Creeslough
is a small welcoming place with around 400 people living there.
But it has 7 million people on this island, and many more beyond, that are holding them in their thoughts and hearts.
We are rooting for you all at this time of unspeakable grief. ❤️
Given the age profile of those getting COVID-19 at the moment, shouldn’t it be the under 40’s asked to restrict their movements outdoors rather than the older age groups?

Be mindful of the fact that HSE bigwigs trying to establish a narrative that

restrictions can’t be lifted because of complacency setting in. This is wrong. We won’t be able to lift restrictions because an adequate testing regime isn’t yet in place.
Taoiseach says he doesn’t know why it takes children’s rights to an assessment so long.
I could tell him why in 10 mins - and it starts with those in HSE disability services who created a new unlawful model of assessing children. Who still don’t get it.
On world autism day the Department for Education should announce that every school in Ireland will cater properly for autistic children. No more opting in or not. Properly resourced. Just get on with it.

If you want to potentially ruin the chances of the Murphy family achieving justice then keep up the armchair commentary and opinions on the accused and the upcoming trial.
A powerful front page.
Sinead O’Connor publicly spoke about her mental health struggles and how hard it was to get help.
And below a story showing how we continue to miserably fail younger people and their families also looking for that help
Ok don’t shoot me down.
Ryan Tubridy has been really badly advised and has made crazy and avoidable errors.
Yet I still think he has done way more good than bad and supported many important values and stories, providing a platform for people who needed us to listen and learn.
This is a classic example of advance conditioning. Managing expectations so that if and when it happens govt can say ‘we have already acknowledged this would happen’.
Same with ‘let’s not get into issues of blame’. Attempt to ward off questioning of any state mistakes
”I guarantee you that in a few weeks’ time we’re going to see clusters occur in schools.”

As a country I’m looking forward to seeing the government plan on moving to that phase where we eliminate the virus of 4,000 kids being homeless, the waiting lists for psychology, speech and language and OT, the lack of social workers and SNA’s, kids waiting for scoliosis ops.
I saw a letter from the HSE to a mum of a now 14 year old boy today. Range of service needs and therapies identified.
Waiting list of 55 months.
That’s 4 and a half years. That child will be an adult and will get no services on this timeframe.
BREAKING NEWS
5 families have launched judicial review proceedings in relation to the failure to provide an appropriate education for children with special and additional needs.
Dept of Education to be put on notice and the cases back in the High Court on Monday.
Croke Park opened for testing with much fanfare. Now closed due to a lack of testing kits. Rightful focus on what citizens can do to prevent spread but the lack of testing, the lack of protective gear for frontline staff, the lack of ICU beds and ventilators all equally important
One of the positive aspects of today’s

ー19 press briefings was that
@SimonHarrisTD
spoke directly to children and young people. We need far more of this. Across government depts.
It’s mad to think that Katharine Zappone’s profile has soared in the last few days and yet we barely heard a thing about her and from her when she was supposed to be promoting the welfare and best interests of Ireland’s children and young people.
You cannot be on the side of children and then refuse to allocate a single extra SEN teacher next year.
The education system has been so badly affected by Covid that children need much extra support.
The ‘exceptional review’ scheme is also as useful as a chocolate teapot.
A four year old Dublin girl who has been assessed as needing speech and language therapy has just received her HSE service statement.
That informs her she can expect her first appointment in February 2024.
How can that be meeting her needs?

In a Midlands Court today 1 single judge was expected to get through 8 Tusla cases, 18 domestic violence cases, 19 maintenance applications and 18 custody, access and guardianship matters.
How is this in any way a proper way to run our courts system?
At polling station older lady still doing a bit of last minute canvassing on the husband 'Come on Eddie, it's like having a spare tyre in the car. You need to have it there and just hope you'd never have to use it'. 😂😂😂😂
Between mid November and mid December there was 1 single positive Covid result in a special school setting. Locking these children out is so disproportionate and the harm being done to them in terms of regression is frightening.

Following an oral hearing a client I have been working with for quite a while has been awarded Domiciliary Care Allowance - DCA- by the Appeals office that will date back to 2011.
A perfect start to the weekend
One of the absolute standout moments of this campaign.
There will be zero ‘striving’ for anything resembling support for carers when this is the dark attitude towards care provision.
Leo Varadkar on the Six O' Clock Show.
He talks about the importance of care within the family and the state should strive to support that
Leo saying the quiet part outloud.
He goes on to say he personally doesn't believe it's the State's responsibility but the families'
Lone parents are still treated so badly by many state bodies and institutions. Let’s not bluff ourselves by saying these are historic issues of concern.
A child disability network team in Swords has a waiting list of 60 months for an introductory meeting for a child needing interventions.
Is this what ‘striving’ to care for people looks like?
Just received news of a successful Domiciliary Care allowance case we have been working on that will see the family payment being awarded and backdated to November 2010.
Those are the results that mean so much to people who have battled for far too long. Amazing 🤩
Important to remember that when we see COVID ICU numbers dropping and might regard that as a positive thing, that a number of those people will have died. A huge and unspeakable tragedy. Low numbers of admissions to ICU in the first place is a much better metric
Do you know one of the most depressing things about
#covid
lockdown? The added time lagfor the children I work with who need speech and language therapy, OT, psychology, the Physio, the scoliosis op, the play therapy, the home support. Even less of a priority for the HSE.
Professional assessment says a 5 year old child needs psychology for emotional regulation difficulties.
HSE’s response? Offer a service to start on 30th June 2025
AND the service will be group meetings for parents only.
Is this a joke because no one is laughing 🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼
It’s breathtaking that the Minister and her Department became aware of fundamental problems with the grading for state exams and yet proceeded to issue second round offers AFTER knowing this.
That’s just unacceptable and a massive breach of the rights of children affected
12 yrs in Children’s Court in Smithfield has taught me that young men fall into substance misuse so easily and often to mask trauma. Investing in education, sport, mental health and adolescent drug projects so important. Mentors, advocates and role models also key
