@ed1conf it's wild to me that % for 1,$ wasn't available until ex(1), and s///i wasn't available until GNU ed in 2011. (Or 1993 to use -i to make all matches case insensitive.) Can you confirm this?.

However, by 1975, EDIT on CDC NOS (descendant of O26) got string wildcards and case insensitivity for search/replace, but ed(1) didn't get s/foo/FOO/i until 1993 with the -i command line switch, and 2011 when Jose E. Marchesi added "'i' and 'I' suffixes to the 's' command."!.
