Everythingism. The belief that every policy is a means for promoting every other policy, all at the same time. Everythingism it’s why nothing works. Defeating Everythingism is the only way we can start to fix everything. This essay explains how.

This is a good idea. I think lead officials on legislation should also have to put their names on it, in the same way that Accounting Officers are forced to sign off financial decisions. It's important to create more accountability for bad legislation.
@s8mb Ensure Bills are named for the sponsoring minister, ensure the bill is subject to proper consultation incluing the RIA. Check against reality. Automatically sunset anything where the RIA is significantly out on its estimate of benefit / cost. Implement regulatory budgets.

This seems unlikely, but it's ridiculous to claim officials should give evidence like this "without interference" from Ministers. Our relationship with China is a political issue. The failure of this trial has made that clear. It should not be for officials to decide.
Breaking: The government says that Matthew Collins, the Deputy National Security adviser was entirely responsible for the evidence given to the CPS in the China spy trial 'The Deputy National Security adviser was given full freedom to provide evidence without interference' The

There are two ways of reading this headline, both daft: 1. Reading books is not helpful. Crazy to consider, I suspect very few professional diplomats in the Middle East have read 25 books about it. 2. We shouldn’t expect to be able to solve problems. But “solutionism” is good!

very quiet, very important tweet: "the AI physiotherapy clinic can now carry out patients' entire care pathway, from assessment and diagnosis to treatment and discharge" full-stack AI clinics > selling an AI widget to a hospital
Exclusive: An AI-powered physiotherapy clinic has secured Class IIa Medical Device approval under EU regulations, meaning that it can carry out diagnostic decisions without human supervision. https://t.co/hqvxzDFtZP

So many of Britain's problems come down to a lack of effective and functioning local govt (or put in another frame, excessive centralisation). Local (or hyperlocal) govts should have the power and means to keep essential high street functions alive, because of their spillovers.
Exclusive: Tories will today pledge to scrap business rates for 250,000 pubs, restaurants and other small firms to help boost the high street Hospitality, retail or leisure firms that pay £110k a year or less in biz rates will get 100% relief. Costs £4bn https://t.co/zp0sWRgT9D

This is a really, really accurate summary of what life is like in a think tank. I will add one more comment - it is best if you are ingenious enough to come up with ideas that are genuinely new. @jo3hill @restate_thinks
The more people I talk to about working at a think tank, the more I think are interested for the wrong reasons. Given we're hiring, I wrote about the reasons to not come and work with us!

Hopefully these reports are correct, and the Mayor will drop unrealistic requirements for developers. It doesn’t matter what proportion are affordable on paper if nobody will build them. Only by building more housing will any of it become more affordable. Good idea from Khan.

Some people seem very worried about the environmental impact of their personal decisions about AI use. Like this DM I had the other day. But they shouldn't worry as much! @AndyMasley's blog on the scale of the impact facts is very helpful, this chart in particular. Link below.

Fantastic discussion about the construction industry and sector support at Labour Party Conference! Loved chairing this one.
🏠 Business-as-usual won’t fix the housing crisis. Cross-sector collaboration, a stronger pipeline of skills, and better use of data are essential. 📝Researcher @sean_eke reflects on the key insights from our private roundtable with @antoniabance at Labour Party Conference.
