And that’s the Budget! Read our Re:Act to find out where we think the Chancellor has ducked the big decisions, and where the jury is still out.
Budget day means it's also Re:Act day! The Re:State team has been busily reading and analysing today's Budget to bring you a snap analysis that gets behind the spin to get to the deeper changes and their implications.

Spending money now with promise of reform later is not serious governing Expanding the welfare state at a time when spending is spiralling in a totally unsustainable way is irresponsible Got v frustrated and wrote a blog 👇
✍Our latest Re:Think Ahead of tomorrow’s Budget, Re:State's Director, @ce_pickles, asks if politicians will finally confront the uncomfortable truth: without real reform, Britain is drifting towards an unaffordable welfare state and a public exhausted by rising taxes.

The Government's line of "no money without reform" (NHS, welfare) has become "lots of money, and maybe some reform later". In tomorrow's Budget we can expect that to continue. Great blog from @ce_pickles.

Please to have contributed thoughts . Very much here for speeding up decision-making & delivery, very much don't think the biggest issue is the write-round process...
exc w/ @_tomscotson As part of the Whitehall delivery drive, government is looking at overhauling the 'write-round' process that's been used by Cabinet for years Frustrated insiders say it creates needless delays It'll be major reform if they go for it https://t.co/ayRbVmzJK6

Procurement reform. 1/6th of the UK economy doesn't work like the rest. The procurement market - where companies bid for govt contracts. It's overdue reform. Great to see our new paper 'Procure and simple' covered in The Timeswith support from Chris Curtis @LabourGrowth 🧵

"It's the year 2040, & Dame Louise Casey has been asked to lead a taskforce to tackle the [insert institution failure]. This is her 234th review/taskforce in the past 15 years. Her commission on social care is now due to report in 2042" Thoughts on our Whitehall superhero...
Dame Louise Casey has become the State’s go-to troubleshooter. But what does that say about Whitehall’s own capacity to solve problems? In our latest Re:Think, Director @ce_pickles asks why Whitehall keeps summoning the same hero to fix its failures. https://t.co/QcIBPjSXco

This is insane. Treating adults like toddlers. Pretty confident, knowing Joe, that he’s just about capable of walking and carrying a cup of tea that has a lid on it
@GWRHelp is it really true that the staff with the drink trolleys on your service can refuse to sell you a drink if you aren’t sitting in a seat at the time you buy it? It seems disproportionate, given my seat was only a few meters behind the trolley when I asked, and I offered

My hero is a farmer, not a duck. Which will only make sense if you read this new piece by me, the start of a new substack which I am bravely calling How To Run A Country.
