These protesters here really aren't 'locals' unlike many who attended the demonstrations in Epping and Diss. Last night's protests saw various pro-refugee groups and Stand Up to Racism shouting at known far-right activists and filmed by lots of citizens journalist.
A new migrant hotel in Canary Wharf has brought furious locals out in protest. This is one of the most โAnywhereโ, transient parts of London. Yet even residents here do not want to bear the burden of Britainโs broken asylum system, says Fraser Myers .

This chimes with our findings in the @britishfuture @BelongNetwork 'State of Us' report published last week. But we are also seeing how action from councils and charities can help to address local tensions.
"'We are going to have a summer of riots. You can just feel it. It is a tinderbox.'". After protests outside asylum hotels, @nicholaswatt reports what he has been told by a parliamentary veteran, who warns: "'My constituents feel they are losing control'". #Newsnight

He is a seasoned but unsuccessful Lib Dem general election candidate in the South West standing in Central Devon in 2010, SE Cornwall in 2015 and 2017 and Torridge and Tavistock in 2024.
๐ TORRIDGE & TAVISTOCK: Phil Hutty has been re-selected by the Lib Dems to fight this seat at the next general election, challenging the 3,950 (7.8%) Tory majority of former Attorney-General Sir Geoffrey Cox. Hutty worled for 30 years as a children and families social worker.

I used to run a citizenship PGCE course. For me, improving political education in schools should be a higher priority than votes at 16. This should include critical thinking and media literacy, to build resilience to mis/disinformation.
When we asked about lowering the voting age to 16 last year the public tended to oppose the proposals. By a 48% to 27% margin. There were however stark age divides; younger voters more likely to back the proposals, older voters dead against.

I'm in Wetherspoons in a town that saw riots in 2024. Some sympathy for the Afghans who served with British military. But also "how many secret schemes do they have?" and views that the evacuation is a deliberate act to replace the white UK population.
There has been a huge leak of classified information which put up to 100,000 Afghans at risk of death. There was the biggest covert evacuation in peacetime. Almost 24,000 Afghans affected by the data breach have been brought to the UK or will be at huge cost to the taxpayers.

This is a disaster in terms of public trust in politicians and will fuel lots of conspiracy theories. There should be no super-injunctions. Immigration and asylum policy should be subject to parliamentary, media and public scrutiny.
Almost 7,000 Afghan nationals are being relocated to the UK following a massive data breach by the British military in 2022 that the Government tried to keep secret with a super injunction. For more on this and other news visit

Belong & @britishfuture ran focus group & stakeholder discussions across the UK and put out a call for evidence. Although there's a risk of future disorder, there are also reasons for optimism: energetic councils, faith & civil society organisations working hard to bridge divides.
A new report released today fromย Belongย and @britishfuture - one year on from last summerโs riots - warns that urgent action is needed to prevent unrest being reignited. #TheStateOfUs.

The research is based on focus groups & stakeholder discussions across the UK, a national survey, a call for evidence and a literature reviews. Worrying findings must be a wake up call for Government.
"The State of Us: Community strength + cohesion in the UK". A major review from.@britishfuture + @BelongNetwork network published today warns of unaddressed social tensions a year on from last summer's riots, in a foundational input to the new Commission on Community & Cohesion.

Very odd results. I did the old More in Common test 2 months ago, and was a Progressive Activist. Now I am a Sceptical Scroller.
In 2020 @Moreincommon_ launched the British 7 Segments. After a pandemic, major global conflicts, political upheaval, cost of living crisis, changes in work/social/information habits itโs time to update them for 2025. Hereโs an intro to our new tribes of Britain (Quiz link next)

My problem with Lord Hermer is that he has largely represented the worst in society. The associated media coverage has distorted public understanding about the purpose of human rights law โ reframing it as protection for bad people, rather than something to safeguard everyone.
