So NYPD cops at our subway station asked my 3yo if she wanted stickers and then handed her these. I am livid. Handing out well-known white nationalist stickers to kids???
A year ago today, our dr transferred an embryo into my uterus. Our daughter is now sleeping (*sort of) in her crib. Tomorrow, the senate will hold confirmation hearings for a lifetime SC appointment for a woman who thinks that both my marriage & parenthood should not be legal.
Has anyone written about the way behavioral issues among white kids is constructed as giftedness? I would really like to read anything that’s out there.
Horrifying: A middle school teacher has a secret life as a white nationalist and suggested that she brings her views into her Florida classroom. via

Yeah Christian has become synonymous with (replaced, really) Protestant. I worked on the NSYR survey years ago and a lot of people will respond to surveys as “Christian” if you ask them to categorize themselves between broad religions that include Protestant and Catholic.
There is so much bravery in this action last night. It is overwhelming, in these times, to see both the depths of depravity and the depths of goodness in ordinary people.
“NO MORE WEAPONS. NO MORE WAR. CEASEFIRE IS WHAT WE’RE FIGHTING FOR”
7,000 Palestinians are already dead and over a million more have been displaced. Israeli leaders continue to openly use genocidal rhetoric.
We desperately need a ceasefire now.
@tressiemcphd
Reminds me of a study of elementary school kids that found that the kids identified as bullies often named the kids they bulllied as friends (the kids they bullied did not name them as friends in return, unsurprisingly).
Okay still angry. Handing out police car stickers? Fine, whatever. I don’t give my kid copaganda but I also get that I’m not mainstream. But thin blue line crap??? Absolutely no.
This is dark:
“Being an influencer kid turned my relationship with my mom into more of an employer-employee relationship than a parent-child one,” she says. “Once you cross the line from being family to being coworkers, you can’t really go back.”
a former child influencer tells me about the cost of a life lived online – the first menstrual period turned into a sponsored post, the pressure to appear perfect, the endless work, the confusion of what was real and what wasn't

The anxiety/guilt over protecting your kid's health over socializing and then seeing them having a harder time in crowds and with new people than their peers who have less covid-conscious parents. We were left with no good options and it hurts.

We told a friend of mine we were enrolling my 2.5yo in soccer to get some of her energy out and she was like “why are you building her stamina???” 😂
Some personal news...the cats now have a human sibling. They are remarkably chill about this development. Our daughter is also remarkably cute. And we are all doing well!

I’ve spent a lot of time at my mom’s assisted living facility and now a few days at my in-law’s retirement community, and now I need an ethnographer to write about the social hierarchies and machinations in one of these places. They seem like very mean high schools.
Thrilled to be starting the year with some job security and a new title. I'm now a tenured Associate Professor! (This will take some getting used to).

I work about 35-40 hours a week. Sometimes up to 50 if I’m under deadline. If that makes me a mediocre scholar, so be it (although I doubt it). I also travel, work out, and have a great family and social life, and that is more than worth it
#academictwitter
To state the obvious, this is not enough. We pushed people to take on loans, with not going to college framed as failure, and now give them a pittance and ask them to be grateful.

I join my colleagues in repudiating the racist attacks against Dr. Cross. Using standard language to describe datasets and methods is good scientific practice. It allows others to build upon that work (and replicate it) in the future.
Regarding allegations against Christina Cross: We, a group of scientists who lead public datasets (including PSID), wish to state that her discussion of PSID isn't plagiarism. Standard language to describe public data is, in fact, good scientific practice

I don't think I would be less angry if I knew public opinion was with her, but there is something particularly galling about Republicans being able to push someone so extremist through without the will of the people behind them.
Book manuscript revisions submitted!!! 😬😬😬 I don’t tweet about the book much because I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m really happy with where it is now.
Here's a good rundown of ACB's position on IVF:
As the article states, she alone can probably not make IVF illegal. But I'm still pissed as hell, and also scared.
Academics, what system do you use to keep track of and plan for project tasks? I have a good system for scheduling my time but I think I might need something to break down tasks. Trello? Something else?

I just realized that Warren would definitely be the kind of advisor/mentor I’m drawn to: brutally honest and critical in office hours but brags about how great you are to everyone else.
I’ve never done a proper intro but for some reason I’ve gotten a lot of new followers recently so here it goes: I’m a sociologist but I tweet about anything that strikes my interest. Much like my career, I know a narrow focus garners greater rewards but I can’t do it. Welcome.
Term limits are not a great idea; they create a situation in which politicians are less responsive to voters. You know what is a great idea? Campaign finance reform. We can make politicians less responsive to corporations *and* remove some advantages of being the incumbent.

“A country with enough money to give a single billionaire a $2.9 billion lunar lander contract can afford to let women recover from the highly inconvenient task of perpetuating humanity.”
This is beautiful and Brooklyn is beautiful. It feels so insignificant to say how heartbreaking this all is. My mind can’t fathom how people pick and choose the atrocities they deplore or condone. But at least tonight there is some light ❤️
Did we all know that flight attendants were (are) not being paid until the cabin doors close? I did not know this. I shouldn’t be surprised by this level of wage theft and yet…
My daughter was exposed to COVID at daycare this past week. Fine, we’ve gone through this before. Everyone needs to get a COVID test. Great except NYC has scaled back testing 1/
I have seen some brutal images on social media in the last few weeks, but what haunts me is the indifference of those I thought I had common ground with.
Twitter friends, what are the best sources of citable info on how women's employment & childcare responsibilities have been affected by covid? (And are there authors I should be watching to update these cites in the next couple of months?)

“How is that not national news? A 16 year old beaten to death in a public school bathroom? By other students. All these unanswered seemingly obvious questions about what transpired, and how the adults involved acted. That should be every headline.”

Similar to what Mayor Adams said about the gifted program. Decades of research on what really affects kids’ academic performance and still they’ll claim it’s all about working hard 🙄
As many people have pointed out, breastfeeding is not accessible to everyone for a host of reasons. For illustration of the time component, here’s my feeding tracker for the first 3 months of my daughter’s life.

Agreed and at the same time…this just isn’t going away and I honestly don’t know what to do about that. Individual actions won’t protect my family unless I homeschool my kid & never travel again.
That I haven’t seen my mother, who is on hospice for advanced COPD, since February. That she will likely never meet her only grandchild. That her mental health has been damaged by social distancing rules at her assisted living facility. That she may die before I can see her again
My suspicion about Fox & NYPost's treatment of this election is not that they suddenly realize he's insane--they knew that. They just got what they needed from him (courts, gutting the bureaucracy, roll back on climate, etc, etc) and he's no longer useful to them.
I grew up with lesbian parents in conservative Ohio. We lied about who they were to protect our family. Hiding an essential piece of yourself/your family when you are just a kid takes something from you—it makes you guarded and afraid, aware that there is always something 1/
Greg Abbot has officially directed Family and Protective Services to begin investigating all trans children in Texas and prosecuting their parents as child abusers.
He has also instructed all teachers, doctors, and caregivers to begin reporting any trans students they see.

Well-planned aspirations are not only insufficient for a college degree without substantial resources, they are fodder for an exploitative higher education system.
So...fun fact: Those trinkets you get typically have logos on them—from a publisher, software co., etc. Those companies are called sponsors, and they pay tens of thousands to get their names on things, thus offsetting conference costs. Without them, your fees would be higher.
Fellow sociologists, I would hope none of us got these fancy letters after our names to be silent in the face of genocide. Let’s get real about solidarity and vote yes on the Resolution for Justice in Palestine! Voting starts tomorrow.
We love the

conference theme this year, but it needed three more words to be accurate!
Ballots open tomorrow, April 17! Get ready to vote YES for the Resolution for Justice in Palestine so we say resoundingly we believe in solidarity, hope, justice for ALL!
NEW: The New York Times is investigating an Israeli freelancer after she repeatedly liked multiple X posts that indicated a pro-Israel bias, including one that called for the Gaza Strip to be turned into a “slaughterhouse.”
My two year old already calls me "Jess" periodically. I'm just going through my day, feeding her lunch or whatever, and I hear, "thanks, Jess." That jerk is going to be a problem as a teenager 😂
This is some bullshit. They want Serena to wear short little skirts over medically appropriate sportswear. What purpose does that serve? (Hint: it’s not about the game).
The French Open banned Serena Williams from wearing her Wakanda-inspired catsuit again. She said the suit helped her avoid blood clots — like the ones that almost killed her after the birth of her daughter.
This kind of salary would benefit graduate students directly and would likely improve their research creativity and productivity and their teaching effectiveness.

Indeed. Where are the massive piles of exams and papers I’m supposed to hold on to for 5 years and don’t have the energy to move into my filing cabinets???
After a crazily busy and hard year, I committed myself to a lazy summer and I'm proud to say I'm following through. This may be the first summer where I actually do what I said I would do. 🏆
Goodbye Philly & ASA folks! I adore you and also am exhausted and ready to be home. I don’t know how some of you manage for longer.
Pros to this year’s conference (beyond the academics): location & availability of chairs / Cons: TIMING
Now that I’m a parent, my wife and I don’t just hang around at night watching TV. We hang around watching TV while showing each other pictures of our child.
