I wish non-Swedish speakers could understand how the absolute most entertaining thing about
#Swedengate
is the deadly serious debate in domestic media with takes from experts on “food security” and on foreign policy options for salvaging the national brand
I still can’t get over the national newspaper of record endorsing a cultural change to feed children’s friend and recommending a mobile payment request be sent to the kid’s parents as a compromise
Last night I told three (highly educated, intelligent) Swedish people that Covid-19 spreads primarily through the air and not by touching surfaces. There was a collective gasp of shock, looks of sincere skepticism, then a resolution to read up on this to see if I was lying.
Referring to protests as antisemitic in the same sentence that you link them to the Soros dogwhistle is the kind of mental gymnastics that should win an Olympic medal
The antisemitic protests at Universities are funded by George Soros and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
These groups are responsible for Jewish students being terrified to go to campus because their lives are being threatened.
I fully agree with the White House—these “protests” are antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous.
Add some tiki torches and it’s Charlottesville for these Jewish students.

President Minouche Shafik: do your job or resign so Columbia can find someone who will.
New rule: if you think the results of a poll for a camp song contest, facing mass boycotts, in which people had to PAY to vote and could vote up to 20x is representative of “the Swedish people” then you shouldn’t get to make laws.
@benjaminbutter
You sound incredibly ridiculous in this tweet. It’s objectively true that the Israeli government - in the quote he is referencing - was stating a plan to commit war crimes. He also begins by… authentically sympathizing?
What is a "serious" newspaper even doing using the word woke non-ironically, let alone citing an article that has not gone through peer review?
Let's unpack how utterly asinine the Economist piece is.
Swedish Minister for Immigration says a pro-immigration former party leader who was the target of attempted assassination by a white supremacist is the source of “big problems” her government, backed by a party rooted in Nazism, must now fix.
This is shockingly low politics.

Absolutely incredible: I mock Swedes for being overly dramatic when people criticize Sweden & added on this tweet to say I still prefer it to my home country (US). Now Spaniards *attacking* me en masse b/c they assume (for no reason I can discern) that this is about hating Spain?
Richard Jomshof (SD) sa 2015: ”jag har aldrig sett [judar] som ett problem eftersom den judiska gruppen är så pass liten.”
Alltså om judarna får för många barn behöver vi en lösning?

1. It’s quite clear some of this is more truly about food (in)security; 2. Even if we accept this, the drama of not having a semantic distinction between starvation risks and being uncomfortable eating around other people’s children still says SO MUCH
Used to disagree; now agree. Particularly when Labour is offering a Tory-lite menu of policy options, what are you tactically voting for/against anyway?
So called "tactical voting" cannot include a vote for Labour.
If you recognise the system isn't working - rewarding the party who are helping keep the unfairness isn't tactical.
Keir Starmer wants to keep first past the post - which ensures future Tory governments.

The Liberals have agreed to stripping dual citizens of their Swedish citizenship.
@Liberalerna
, this is absolutely disgusting and among the most illiberal policies you could have agreed to.
Sweden’s new chair of parliament’s justice committee makes openly racist, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic statements. Yet the center right parties that appointed him are silent after spending much of the last year attacking

with sexist and classist comments. Shameful.

Living in Sweden as an immigrant is basically just a constant battle to convince doctors to prescribe you very basic essential medicines, usually without victory
“History will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen” is definitely something I will now say to Swedish bartenders who are stingy with their cocktail measurements.

Columnist Lena Andersson writing in conservative Svenska Dagbladet with grotesque climate denial
I said when SD-controlled Kristersson government took power last year: SD’s climate denial in the Riksdag will allow denial to enter the Swedish “opinion corridor”. Fear I was right.
My least favorite thing abt living in

is the type of thing that happened on Twitter today. I was told to stop using English on my own social media account if I want to criticize government policy in Sweden. I should also refer to Sweden only in the first person ("we"). 1/
Same day Swedish Liberals, Moderates, & Christian Dems present sweeping radical right agreement w/ neo-Nazi party, leading figure in party who recently did fascist salute on TV says Anne Frank was “immoral” because of how “horny” she was.
The WHO has now told Sweden to recommend the use of face masks. But Swedes keep telling me there’s no evidence for them and they trust “the experts”.
Genuine question: why are FHM considered more expert than WHO, even when they stand almost alone in the world?
Packed bus, central Stockholm, no masks. It’s a weekend so the rush hour guidelines don’t apply. Why are the guidelines - if they must be context-specific - be about time and not congestion?

Sweden: Why would we close stores due to a pandemic? This is a secular society. Only science matters. Science says they can stay open.
Also Sweden: You are forbidden from purchasing alcohol today in recognition of the Crucifixion.
Why has Suella Braverman gone even more right wing & full fascist?
Because the Labour Party have already planted themselves in the right wing position.
The problem isn't just the Tories. It's the Tories *and* Labour both occupying similar spaces.
The speed at which my tweets criticizing the Swedish popular circulate makes me wonder if there aren’t just so many trolls/bots using Sweden as a political lightning rod.
What the Swedes aren’t telling you: this food of which they make “only exactly enough for the family” is not infrequently pasta with ketchup instead of tomato sauce.
The Swedish government reached yet another low on climate change by saying that smart climate policy is having great wifi to convince people to use public transportation 🫠
@JeremiahLee
I mean, even if masks don’t work (I am not a skeptic, just making a point), that would not mean it isn’t airborne? Like a mask can’t protect you from certain chemical weapons but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist
Of all the weird quirks in all the places I’ve lived, the weirdest by far is the very intense nationalism almost all of Sweden feels regarding “not being nationalist”.
@ChrChristensen
“Nothing that happens in Sweden can be racist because there is no racism in Sweden” is the kind of mindfuck I hadn’t experienced since the Bush torture memos
All of you keep telling me this is about “boss” and sailors but two people from Halmstad swore to me it was about ticking “yes” box on forms when you travel

They’re protesting in the main square, where Malmö protests always happen because these are government buildings. The only hotel on the square appears to be a Scandic, where I would doubt she’s staying. And no signs I’ve seen in Swedish or English say anything about ethnicity.
Tom McClintock’s question was revolting. Asking how the witnesses voted violates the principles of the secret ballot. Does the GOP still believe in democracy?

I don’t disagree but lol at these quotes. 1.) “being able to explain clearly” is a criterion on every TT job ad; why wouldn’t it be something tenured faculty are expected to do? 2.) if RAs make half-assed effort unless they coauthor, let them coauthor or offer better conditions

memory is from 2012 when the German points-announcer pointedly told Azerbaijan the result of their vote and then said “Its good to vote. It’s good to have a choice. Good luck on your journey, Azerbaijan.”
Excited I can finally share: this week I formally accepted an offer for a two-year postdoctoral position as a Research Officer in Environmental Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, starting in July

If UCU is for capitulation, as now seems obvious, then it does not stand against the war. Anyone who is for ending arms flows to Ukraine is in favor of the war.
I won’t share it because it doesn’t need any more traffic, but the video of people mocking Palestinians for their lack of food, water and electricity really broke me. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen something so heartless purporting to be comedy.
It’s not that I plan to commit a crime that would have my citizenship stripped away. It’s that you are now saying my citizenship is “less than” - it is contingent. This is astonishingly illiberal, and I will never forgive you for it.

told me that in Massachusetts, water conservation regulations include bans on serving tap water in restaurants, but lawn-watering at golf courses is exempt from all restrictions & I want you all to know that we can now document the precise moment I was radicalized
It is extremely clear to me that Israel as a state is guilty of the crime of apartheid, and it is also clear to me that Palestinian resistance is inevitable, understandable, and inherently violent.
I do not see that as justification for slaughtering civilians.

But then you really should quit? I can promise you that if you’re not enjoying it now, you won’t enjoy the undesirable, insecure career after. It is substantially more work and more stressful; the only motivation for me is loving the work.
The person who criticized me today appears to be, in fact, a journalist.
Why do Swedes feel that they should be able to write critically about other governments/cultures in their own (rather arcane) language but take such offense at use of the lingua franca to criticize Sweden?
So it's nothing new, but it is frustrating. Also, it's deeply hypocritical. The debate pages of Swedish newspapers - and indeed, most of the Swedish public - express strong, detailed, nuanced, highly critical opinions of other countries (especially the US) every day. In Swedish.
@GulanAvci
So much to unpack here. First, the obvious, that
@AgnesWold
has no understanding of or concern for science. No one credible has ever claimed masks stop all spread. Then, consider that masks have never been common in Sweden - so, no, it wouldn’t be over.
Swedish media - public broadcasting in particular - needs a rethink about a.) bias and b.) how it treats academics. A hopefully short thread on a frustrating story...
Some people who expatriate from Sweden miss the achingly beautiful summer twilight. Others miss delicious sticky pastries. Some miss quiet walks in the winter snow.
I miss being able to look up someone’s marital status, salary, and apartment size immediately after meeting them.
Also this is a personal social media account. I use the global lingua franca to reach a broader audience. If you don't like the language, perhaps I'm not tweeting for you. Pedestrians in Sthlm regularly chastise me for speaking English TO MY DOG.
@jessphillips
Your party leader and Shadow AG both publicly defended Israel’s right to commit the crimes the ICC has now accused Netanyahu of in the early days after 7th October. How is that the exact opposite?
A lot to unpack here. 1st, what if I don't speak fluent Swedish but live here? Am I not entitled to express an opinion, even if I obtain citizenship, until I've learnt fluent Swedish? There are great English news sources like
@TheLocalSweden
that provide enough info to have a POV
It’s still going on, and they’re doubling down. I can tell you all that I will try to never single out the Swedes for being so fragile when outsiders critique them…
New rule: if neo-Nazis win the Swedish election, Americans and Brits on the left have GOT to stop holding Sweden up as the *exact* model of what they want their country to be unless they qualify it as "Sweden of the 1970s"
Can’t stop thinking about the two people I know who voted for the Moderates and justified their vote - and M cooperation with SD - by saying Sweden has too much gang violence when both of them regularly purchase and abuse cocaine
Why must I speak Swedish in my private capacity?
Then there is the general belief, common in Sweden, that "outsiders" should not criticize Sweden. Susan Sontag wrote about the bizarre, severe sensitivity to foreigners' criticism of Sweden in a 1969 essay on the country.
“We LEAD the WORLD in accepting other cultures! NO ONE does multilateralism like us! Other countries are horrible places where they don’t tolerate other countries LIKE WE DO! Here are 39 reasons why our covid strategy wasn’t nationalist but WAS the BEST!”
Britain: No sexual scandal, reckless pandemic party, criminal act, security failure, or ministerial resignation will topple this incompetent leader.
Scandinavia: THE DANISH GOVERNMENT MUST FALL BECAUSE OF CONSTITUTIONAL TECHNICALITIES AND THE POWER OF THE MINK LOBBY
Love this UK academic publisher that thinks Greek and Swedish are the same “ethnicity” but Polish is different. Definitely no problematic British stereotypes to see here.
Just a reminder to everyone that if you ask about my post-PhD plans (I defend next week), however polite you are, “I hope you stay in Sweden, you’re the type of immigrant we need” is never not going to come across to me as racist
I think every day about the fact that Italy will be governed by a fascist woman, Britain is governed by a woman who is completely dismantling the state, but Finland has the woman Prime Minister who was shamed most in the press because she’s really hot and fun
I am really disappointed in, if not surprised by,
@TheEconomist
. Do better with your journalism.
Define your terms clearly & rely on credible, peer-reviewed research (or at the very least specify that it has not been and consider the validity of the research design).
It looks increasingly like the right wing will win the Swedish election. If that happens, the entire world will need a new
#climate
leader & role model: Sweden will be even further off-track from meeting its climate targets. This is just a fact - a really devastating fact.
If you want to argue against lockdowns, that’s one thing, but if working papers without peer review are reported as something approaching scientific fact, what does it say about the future of Swedish academia?
If you cannot pinpoint a time when the change occured, it could not have been observed empirically. This is why the matter of peer review is crucial to the credibility of the source material.
For me, originally from the US, the absolute wildest thing about both UK & Sweden - although at different nodes on the trajectory & to different degrees - has always been watching an entire population look at the dismantling of its welfare state & think “yes more of that please!”
It's not wrong or fallacious to research/report on a possible uptick in social justice concerns or a potential convergence of opinion among those with particular political identities. But "wokeness" is not a real concept w/ identifiable boundaries and observable characteristics.
